Youth often times (understandably so) love their family members and have strong ties to them – even in the most unsafe or abusive circumstances. Attendees will learn from youth with lived experience of being in traumatic and toxic family situations strategies for how to best support youth. Strategies such as safety planning\, creating boundaries\, how to handle difficult conversations\, how to handle crisis and more. \nThe Link is a youth and adult led nonprofit based in North Minneapolis that provides crisis intervention\, supportive services\, emergency shelter and housing for youth and families who are experiencing homelessness\, who are victim survivors of sex trafficking and/or who are involved in the juvenile justice or foster care systems. \nThis webinar is free for all to attend. SUMMARY:Extreme Rosk Protection Orders
DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nThe Minnesota Alliance on Crime is presenting a training with Rana Alexander\, Esq. of Standpoint where participants will learn about a new option for Minnesota victims in 2024 that allows for the court to prohibit an individual’s possession or purchase of firearms. \nEffective January 1\, 2024\, Minnesota law allows certain people to request an order from the court to prohibit someone from purchasing or possessing a firearm. This type of order is called an Extreme Risk Protection Order (ERPO). Although the term is not used in the Minnesota law\, laws that authorize these types of orders are often called “red flag” laws. An ERPO may be issued if a person poses a significant danger of bodily harm to others and/or is at significant risk of suicide if they possess a firearm. Presenter Rana Alexander\, Esq. of Standpoint will explain the new law as well as how it will be handled by the courts and law enforcement. DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nMinnesota Alliance on Crime (MAC) is presenting a training opportunity on working with victims with severe mental illness. \nViolence and crime are systemic problems that impact all members of a community\, either directly or indirectly. Crime victims may experience new or exacerbated mental health issues as the result of being the victim of a crime\, and research shows that people with mental health issues are also statistically more likely to be victimized themselves. Advocates working with victims of crimes should be educated and trained in basic information regarding mental health symptoms and causes\, as well as strategies to effectively advocate and work with a victim experiencing severe mental health issues. Advocates must also be aware of the impacts of vicarious trauma on their own mental health and have the tools and support needed to succeed sustainably in their roles. \nLearning objectives\n1) Understand correlations between crime victimization and mental health\, including differences and similarities between short-term trauma responses and long-term chronic mental health diagnoses. \n2) Differentiate between the role of an advocate versus other criminal justice system partners and how to effectively advocate for victims experiencing mental health symptoms\, including sample language and de-escalation techniques advocates can use to mediate a mental health crisis. \n3) Learn the impacts of vicarious trauma on advocates and review strategies to improve the health and well-being of frontline providers working with crime victims. \nRegister via MAC

SUMMARY:Advocacy and Mental Health Therapy: A Cross-Training for Advocates and Therapists
DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nThe Minnesota Alliance on Crime and the Minnesota Center for Psychology (MCP) present a cross-training for both advocates and therapists. Victims and Others Impacted by Crime-Services (VOIC-S)\, is a new program of the Minnesota Center for Psychology that offers mental health therapy services to victims impacted by crime. VOIC-S consists of mental health professionals who are specially trained to work with victims of crime and trauma focused therapies. The program was designed with input from victim advocates who will work in partnership with the therapists to ensure that barriers to care are reduced. \nThis training is for advocates who would like to learn about the process of making a referral to MCP and how best to prepare a survivor for the therapeutic process. The training is also for therapists who will learn about the criminal\, legal\, and emotional processes the survivor must go through after the crime. The goal of the training is to share information between advocates and therapists to reduce barriers to therapy and improve outcomes. \nThis training is free for all to attend live\, the recording of the event will be available exclusively for MAC members. \nRegister Online via Minnesota Alliance on Crime
