SUMMARY:Screening Youth for Symptoms of Trauma and Suicidal Ideation
DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nThe Center for Safe and Healthy Children\, a child maltreatment program at the University of Minnesota\, has implemented a screening tool to identify symptoms of childhood traumatic stress and suicidal ideation.  The Care Process Model for Pediatric Traumatic Stress (CPM-PTS) was developed by the University of Utah and is expanding to Child Advocacy Centers throughout the country.  Based on the results of the screening tool\, youth will receive a referral for the appropriate level of therapeutic support which may include ongoing evidence-based therapy or an urgent mental health assessment.  All families will receive an in-office intervention (i.e.\, education\, mindfulness\, meditation\, square breathing\, journaling) to address their primary trauma symptom.  Communication between youth and caregiver will also be strengthened.  Today’s presentation will provide an overview of the CPM-PTS and how it can improve service delivery to children and adolescents who have experienced trauma. \nAbout the Trainer\nRebecca Foell\, LICSW | Program Coordinator\, Otto Bremer Trust Center for Safe and Healthy Children \nRebecca Foell\, LICSW obtained her undergraduate degree in Sociology from the University of Kansas and her Master’s Degree in Social Work from the University of Wisconsin—Madison.  Rebecca has dedicated her career to working with children and families impacted by trauma.  She has provided outpatient mental health services\, victim advocacy\,  and crisis support and has most recently focused on program development.  Rebecca is currently the Program Coordinator for the Otto Bremer Trust Center for Safe and Healthy Children\, working with the multidisciplinary team to address issues related to child abuse and neglect through direct service\, research\, prevention\, and education. \nRegister Here\n

SUMMARY:Addressing the Systemic Needs of Children and Youth with Problematic Sexual Behaviors (PSB)
DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nJoin Geoff Sidoli\, MSW\, LCSW\, for a live\, virtual training on children and youth who exhibit problematic sexual behaviors (PSB). The presentation will address historical beliefs that inappropriately labeled\, criminalized\, and pathologized these kids while providing more accurate details about the nature and origins of their sexual behaviors. \nThese behaviors between children can range from experimentation and exploration that are developmentally normal\, to unwanted\, exploitive\, and abusive in nature. Distinguishing between appropriate and problematic sexual behavior can be difficult. These cases often warrant a thorough approach to understand the unique qualities of children and youth that cause sexual harm. \nThe session will cover the best practices for this population\, empirically supported services to address sexualized behaviors\, ongoing challenges for CAC and MDT leadership\, and supports to improve the overall lives of these kids. Participants will receive guidance on suitable services and resources to improve the coordinated response to children and families. In addition\, the training will discuss the need to train\, develop\, and sustain treatment resources for children and youth with PSB. Participants will learn about implementation strategies at the macro and micro levels and access relevant resources. \nLearning objectives\nAs a result of participating in this training\, participants will… \n\nIdentify methods that multidisciplinary teams can use to address the needs of youth with sexualized behaviors.\nIdentify and develop discipline-specific intervention strategies for youth with sexualized behaviors.\nCreate “takeaways” to develop and improve how CACs/MDTs can serve youth and children with PSB.\n\nContinuing Education\nTwo social work continuing education credits. \nAbout the Trainer\n \nGeoff Sidoli MSW\, LCSW\, trains CAC staff around the country to develop\, implement\, and sustain mental health services\, including an enhancement of TF-CBT for PSB. \nHe is NCA’s TTA for PSB and facilitates NCA’s YPSB national work group. Geoff enjoys traveling\, running in the mountains\, and cooking. \nRegister\nRegistration has closed for this training. \n

It will provide practical guidance on tailoring therapeutic skills and activities to fit the developmental needs of younger children\, school-age youth\, and teens. The session will also explore the essential role of parents and caregivers in treatment\, including how they can support their child through the joint witnessing of the trauma narrative. \nAbout the Trainer\nDr. Vrieze is a licensed child and adolescent psychologist and associate professor at the University of Minnesota Medical School in the Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences. I attended Stanford University for undergrad and received my PhD at the University of Minnesota’s Institute of Child Development. In my current faculty position\, I balance direct clinical care of children and families\, and teaching/supervision of advanced graduate psychology students. I specialize in evidence-based treatment of children and adolescents with acute and complex trauma. I am committed to providing culturally-affirming care to diverse patients and families\, including racially/ethnically diverse individuals\, members of the LGBTQ+ community\, and other historically marginalized groups. \n  \nRegister Here\nThis training is free for all attendees. \n*Participants will be emailed a Zoom link one week prior and the day of the training. \nContinuing Education\nOne social work continuing education is provided.

SUMMARY:Changing the Narrative on Suicide and Mental Health
DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nTalking about mental health and suicide can be an uncomfortable and uncertain topic that brings up different feelings\, beliefs\, and attitudes for everyone. Changing the Narrative is an interactive conversation that empowers participants to change perceptions of mental health towards hope and resilience. The goal is to know that individuals are not alone\, help is available\, and healing is possible. \nThroughout the session\, participants will engage in dialog about being intentional in the words we are using. Certain ways of talking about mental health and suicide can alienate members of any community\, sensationalize the issue\, contribute to a decrease in help-seeking behavior\, or even present suicide as a glamorous\, preferred way of dealing with problems. Having healthy conversations about mental health and suicide avoids harmful messages that might increase suicide risk in individuals or undermine suicide prevention goals. By doing this safely\, it reduces stigma\, mitigates risks\, promotes help-seeking\, and respects all individuals. \nAbout the Trainer\n \nTanya Carter is the Suicide Prevention Unit Supervisor for the Minnesota Department of Health. Ms. Carter has 20 plus years of experience in community education programs\, program development\, and crisis intervention. She is passionate about suicide prevention and reducing the stigma related to mental illness. Prior to joining the Minnesota Department of Health\, Ms. Carter worked in tribal and county government\, coordinating and leading mental health\, mobile crisis\, and suicide prevention efforts in rural Minnesota. Ms. Carter is a safeTALK\, ASIST\, Postvention and CALM trainer. In her free time Ms. Carter enjoys spending time outdoors with her husband and two children\, in the winter time you will find her on the ski slopes with her kids\, and in the summer months enjoying time at the lake\, the in-between seasons are spent biking the beautiful Minnesota bike trails. \nRegister Here\nThis training is free for all attendees. \n*Participants will be emailed a Zoom link one week prior and the day of the training. \nContinuing Education\nOne social work continuing education is provided.

SUMMARY:CAC Model: Working with Children & Non-Offending Family Members
DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nWhen authorities suspect a child may be experiencing abuse\, the child is brought to a Child Advocacy Center (CAC)\, a safe and child-focused environment. At the CAC\, the child recounts their experience once to a trained forensic interviewer who employs sensitive questioning techniques to avoid retraumatizing the child. CACs provide a range of services including therapy\, medical examinations\, courtroom preparation\, victim advocacy\, case management\, and more. This collective approach\, known as the multidisciplinary team (MDT) response\, constitutes a fundamental aspect of CAC operations. \nRegistration is Free!\nRegistered attendees will receive a Zoom link one week and one day before this training event starts. \nThe Alliance believes trauma-informed\, anti-racist\, and culturally responsive services are essential to helping children heal.
