SUMMARY:NCAC Forensic Interviewing of Children Training
DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nThe National Children’s Advocacy Center (NCAC) Forensic Interviewing of Children training is an internationally recognized\, research-informed and practice-informed intensive training. Participants will learn necessary skills to conduct a competent investigative interview of a child using the NCAC Child Forensic Interview (CFI) Structure. Participants will also be introduced to the evidence-based literature that supports the NCAC CFI Structure. This 4-day\, interactive training is facilitated by practicing forensic interviewers who are well-versed in the current literature. The training includes lectures\, skill-building activities\, guided discussions\, reflections\, and an interview practicum in a supportive environment with assessment and feedback provided by experienced interviewers. \nRegister through NCAC\nRegister by Tuesday\, February 11\, 2025.

DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\n\nForensic interviewers encounter a variety of forms of reluctance in child witnesses. Forensic interviewers are challenged to adopt a single strategy as reluctance is often the result of a complex interaction of factors including external and internal influences. SUMMARY:NCAC More Than One Interview: When\, Why\, and How
DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nForensic interviewers and multi-disciplinary partners recognize the shortcomings of strict adherence to a “one and done” interview approach. Research provides some clarification of reasons why a child may need more than one interview and limited recommendations for implementation\, leaving forensic interviewers and their investigative partners with little clarity about how to apply this information to day-to-day practice. This training will review supportive literature\, introduce a decision-making process for selecting appropriate cases\, and guidance for conducting follow-up forensic interviews. Recommendations for explaining and defending the multi-session approach are included. Many are responsible for recruiting new interviewers\, providing access to high-quality training and peer review and support\, and supervision; and sustaining and retaining those interviewers at their centers. However\, most CAC directors receive little to no training in forensic interviewing (i.e.\, general knowledge\, protocols\, research\, resources\, etc.)\, which impedes their ability to fully support the interviewers in their CAC. To meet the needs of CAC directors\, especially those newer to their positions\, the National Children’s Advocacy Center (NCAC) has developed a new training\, Cultivating the Forensic Interview Program: Support for CAC Executive Directors. \nFacilitated by Linda Cordisco Steele\, this consultation group for executive directors will cover the fundamentals of an effective child forensic interviewing program at a CAC\, the role of the interviewer\, and how to identify the strengths and needs of participants’ current forensic interviewing programs. Upon completion of the program\, executive directors will have developed an actionable plan to support their efforts to enhance the child forensic interviewing program at their respective CACs. \nTraining Format\nThis training will consist of four monthly 90-minute virtual sessions and will include a maximum of 10 CAC directors. DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nForensic interviewers often encounter children who identify as a gender other than the gender assigned to them at birth and/or profess to a different sexual orientation or preference. These children are at high risk for sexual and physical abuse. Additionally\, this group may present with mental health challenges possibly because of encountering criticism or rejection by peers or family. Establishing rapport and trust are important elements of a successful forensic interview. Child witnesses want to feel acknowledged and heard. We will address the importance of a respectful approach with this group of children as well as the challenges in working with investigative partners and the legal system. \nThis training is recommended for forensic interviewers who have developed some comfort and flexibility with the continuum of questioning strategies and the phases of a forensic interview. \nRegister through NCAC\nRegister by September 9\, 2024 \nRegistration is not a guarantee of acceptance into the course. Seats in this training are intended for professionals currently working as part of a Children’s Advocacy Center (CAC). SUMMARY:NCAC Interviewing Children on the Autism Spectrum
DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nChildren with neurodivergent disorders such as ASD are at an increased risk of child maltreatment. This population presents challenges for forensic interviewers as there is great variability in functioning including unique memory and cognitive processes\, linguistic style\, understanding and expression of emotions\, and forming connections with others. Many of these children can provide information about their experiences if the interviewer is able to adapt questioning approaches and interview strategies to meet the needs of this child. Preparation and flexibility are key. While providing a review of possible domains of impact on functioning\, this training will focus on tips for information gathering\, preparation with the investigative partners to set reasonable expectations\, and adaptations to questioning strategies and interview phases. \nThis training is recommended for forensic interviewers who have developed some comfort and flexibility with the continuum of questioning strategies and the phases of a forensic interview. \nRegister through NCAC\nRegister by July 14\, 2024 \nRegistration is not a guarantee of acceptance into the course. Seats in this training are intended for professionals currently working as part of a Children’s Advocacy Center (CAC). The NCAC reserves the right to refund the registration of anyone who is not currently working as part of a CAC to ensure that currently practicing professionals receive the training they need. SUMMARY:NCAC Cultivating the Forensic Interview Program: Support for CAC Executive Directors
DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nThe National Children’s Advocacy Center is presenting four monthly 90-minute virtual sessions that will include a maximum of ten CAC directors on how they can build a successful forensic interview program at their CACs. \nExecutive directors of Children’s Advocacy Centers (CAC) are key champions of child forensic interviewers. Many are responsible for recruiting new interviewers\, providing access to high-quality training and peer review and support\, and supervision; and sustaining and retaining those interviewers at their centers. However\, most CAC directors receive little to no training in forensic interviewing (i.e.\, general knowledge\, protocols\, research\, resources\, etc.)\, which impedes their ability to fully support the interviewers in their CAC. To meet the needs of CAC directors\, especially those newer to their positions\, the National Children’s Advocacy Center (NCAC) has developed a new training\, Cultivating the Forensic Interview Program: Support for CAC Executive Directors. \nFacilitated by Linda Cordisco Steele\, this consultation group for executive directors will cover the fundamentals of an effective child forensic interviewing program at a CAC\, the role of the interviewer\, and how to identify the strengths and needs of participants’ current forensic interviewing programs. Upon completion of the program\, executive directors will have developed an actionable plan to support their efforts to enhance the child forensic interviewing program at their respective CACs. \nTraining Format\nThis training will consist of four monthly 90-minute virtual sessions and will include a maximum of 10 CAC directors. The group’s smaller size will enable more interaction with and learning from other participants and the facilitator. SUMMARY:NCAC Critical Thinking in the Forensic Interview: Moving from Rote to Responsive Practice
DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nEffective forensic interviewers must possess a broad repertoire of skills. Additionally\, forensic interviewers should develop a critical thinking framework to accommodate the needs of the child and the investigative team\, especially in highly complex cases. This training focuses on preparing interviewers to make thoughtful decisions throughout the entirety of the interview. Suggestions for engaging with investigative partners in the adaptations will be addressed. \nThis training is recommended for forensic interviewers wishing to improve their planning\, thinking\, and decision-making processes throughout the forensic interview as well as working effectively with investigative partners. \nWho should attend? \nThis training is specifically designed for experienced interviewers responsible for initial forensic interviews of children working with a multidisciplinary team. It is recommended that the interviewer have at least two years of interviewing experience and have completed nationally-recognized FI training. \nRegister through NCAC\nRegister by June 22\, 2024.\nThe full registration fee is due by the fee deadline stated above in order to hold your spot. DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nChildren referred for a forensic interview during an investigation of maltreatment may also present with either a diagnosis or concerns about their mental health including but not limited to PTSD\, depressive disorder\, anxiety\, and sleep disorder. They may also present concerning behavioral indicators such as a history of self-harm\, suicide ideation or prior attempts\, and anger management issues. The forensic interviewer has two primary goals: eliciting the most complete and accurate information possible for this child and mitigating additional trauma or harm to the child from the interview process. This training will address issues of screening\, assessment\, and strategies for interview adaptations including managing emotional and behavioral responses during the interview process. SUMMARY:NCAC Strategies for Interviewing a Reluctant Child Witness
DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\n\nForensic interviewers encounter a variety of forms of reluctance in child witnesses. Forensic interviewers are challenged to adopt a single strategy as reluctance is often the result of a complex interaction of factors including external and internal influences. A pre- and post-training knowledge check will be administered. \nTopics covered in this course include the following: \n\nNCAC Child Forensic Interview Structure\nDynamics of Abuse\nForensic Conversations\nChild Development\nMemory and Suggestibility\nPre-Interview Planning\nInclusive Forensic Interviewing\nInterview Practicum and Assessment\nTransition Strategies\nEffective Courtroom Testimony\n\nThis training is a four-day commitment. Participants are expected to complete six-hours of pre-work consisting of selected readings and interactive recorded exercises to be done at their own pace prior to the first official day of training. Trainings are conducted multiple times throughout the year either on-site in Huntsville\, AL\, or virtually. \nThis training has been updated to meet the 2023 National Children’s Alliance Standards for Accredited Children’s Advocacy Centers. \nRegister through NCAC\nRegister by November 4\, 2023\nThere is a 25% discount for registrants from Tribal CACs or developing countries. SUMMARY:NCAC SUpervision of Child Forensic Interviewers
DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nAs many child advocacy centers (CAC) employ child forensic interview specialists or choose to develop a small group of investigator interviewers\, there is a growing need for a set plan for building skills and increasing the competency and resilience of their forensic interviewers.  Supervision\, a long-standing tradition in medicine and mental health\, is an established relationship between a senior practitioner and a more junior partner to provide feedback\, guidance\, support\, and ongoing education toward developing a specialized skill. \nAn experienced forensic interviewer may have much to offer a newly developing forensic interviewer but may need more education or direction to increase their knowledge about supervision or develop skills and abilities to provide supervision in a structured and intentional way. \nPrinciples of supervision will be presented and discussed\, along with core values and practices around effective supervision. A model for assessing current forensic interviewers’ skill level and developmental needs will be introduced. In addition\, suggestions for continual growth and support to promote resiliency and longevity\, and excellence in interviewing will be discussed. \nWho should attend?\nThis training is appropriate for experienced forensic interviewers who want to develop or strengthen a supervision program for forensic interviewers within their CAC\, state\, or region. Completion of nationally-recognized forensic interviewing training is required. \nRegister through NCAC\nRegister by October 31\, 2023 \nA 25% discount is available for registrants from developing countries or from Tribal CACs. SUMMARY:NCAC More Than One Interview: When\, Why\, and How
DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nThe forensic interview (FI) of a child is an essential component of any investigation\, with an emphasis given to providing a timely initial response and the provision of information and support throughout the process. Attention has historically been paid to minimizing the number of times a child is questioned\, especially avoiding duplicative interviews. \nForensic interviewers\, as well as law enforcement and child protection investigators\, recognize the shortcomings of a “one and done” approach in interviewing a subset of children. Reasons might be child-specific (shyness in a new situation\, communication challenges\, fatigue\, reluctance to talk about difficult topics) or case-related (multiple episodes of abuse or multiple forms of victimization\, etc.). Research is informative regarding the cases most appropriate for more than one interview session and gives guidance on how to proceed. We will explore a decision-making process for selecting appropriate cases\, case planning\, and adaptations. \nThis training is most helpful for interviewers who have developed basic forensic interviewing skills and are comfortable conducting single-session forensic interviews of child witnesses. Completion of nationally recognized forensic interviewer training and experience conducting at least 50 forensic interviews is required. \nRegister through NCAC\nRegister by October 13\, 2023 \nCancellation Policy\nThe full registration fee is due by the fee deadline stated above in order to hold your spot.
