Consider the approaches you can take to prevent and respond to verbal conflict. This course will explore the communication process\, conflict prevention\, and help you understand why conflicts occur. Instruction will also cover certain circumstances in which verbal de-escalation techniques may not be appropriate\, and provide techniques to resolve such conflicts. Join us to learn how de-escalation techniques and communication skills can potentially defuse tense situations and lead to more successful outcomes. In 2004\, John became Wisconsin’s first “Memphis Model” based CIT officer after attending the 40-hour course offered at the Akron Ohio Police Department. John sees CIT as the best model of training on crisis response available to law enforcement and has helped develop it\, in conjunction with NAMI Fox Valley\, not only at the Appleton Police Department but throughout Wisconsin. That effort resulted in John earning the “CIT International CIT Officer of the Year Award” in 2010. John was also awarded in 2010 the “Protect & Serve Award” from NAMI WI. This training is only for law enforcement\, prosecution\, and court-related officials. \nUpon completion of this training\, you’ll be able to: \n\nUnderstand the means by which a person leaves a digital “trail” for investigators on multiple digital devices\nExamine how to interpret reports of analyzed devices\nApply practices in extracting device histories for investigations\nIdentify methods to complete research warrants with open-source and social media providers\n\nAbout the Trainer\nEdward Merritt – Detective\, Criminal Investigations Division\, Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office  \nDetective Merritt is a 22 year veteran with a law enforcement agency in South East Tennessee. He is currently assigned to the criminal investigations division where he primarily works cases involving internet crimes against children. In addition to his current assignment\, he serves as a technical adviser to his department’s hostage negotiations team and is the team leader for the sheriff’s underwater recovery team (S.U.R.T.). He is a P.O.S.T. certified Child Abuse Instructor and has received training in Advanced Investigation and Prosecution of Child Abuse and Exploitation through the National Advocacy Center. Since 2008 he has attended training in Modern Internet Communications and Cell phone investigations from the FBI and a number of the nation’s private vendors. He is a strong supporter of training in the proper seizure of mobile devices and hopes to one day see a national standard in testifying to cell site location information. \nRegister through NCJTC

The strategies taught will focus on the five different forms of prevention that will give a holistic approach in moving forward with a plan for the prevention of child abuse. \nThese five forms are\n\nAfter the fact\nPersonal responsibility\nEnvironmental design\nPolicy development\nAddressing societal norms\n\nAbout Trainer\nSally Kimel-Sheppard\, Executive Director\, Envision Athens and NCJTC Associate. \nSally is a clinically licensed social worker\, working with survivors of child abuse and sexual assault through the Piedmont Judicial Circuit in Georgia. Her career began as a child therapist and forensic interviewer at The Tree House\, Children’s Advocacy Center. After working with over 1000 children while at The Tree House\, Sally became the Executive Director of The Cottage; a sexual assault center and children’s advocacy center in Athens\, Georgia. During her 15 years at The Cottage\, Sally developed programs and statewide standards for both sexual assault centers and children’s advocacy centers in Georgia. Sally also served at the Board of Directors Chairperson for the Children’s Advocacy Centers of Georgia. In 2022\, Sally joined Envision Athens\, where she works with governmental\, non-profit and other agencies to address issues affecting the quality of life in Athens\, Georgia. SUMMARY:Creating a Community Action Plan for the Prevention of Child Sexual Abuse
DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nNational Criminal Justice Training Center (NCJTC) of Fox Valley Technical College is hosting a training opportunity for professionals in law enforcement\, prosecution\, and related court officials with Detective Edward Merritt. \nJoin other child-serving professionals to create a plan of action for preventing child sexual abuse of youth in your care. Learn the signs and symptoms of child sexual abuse\, mandated reporter and stakeholder responsibilities. Identify strengths and weaknesses of current prevention practices\, and develop an action plan\, using the Strategic Prevention Dashboard\, for your organization. This course is open to all members of child serving organizations such as preschool\, after-school care\, summer camps\, church groups\, athletic associations or others responsible for the care of minors. This course is for professionals in community corrections officer\, court system personnel\, educators\, emergency management\, law enforcement\, law enforcement support\, prosecutors\, social workers\, tribes/tribal partners\, and victim service providers. \nTraining Schedule:\nSeptember 20 | 11:00 am – 7:00 pm Eastern (One hour for lunch at 2:30 pm) \nSeptember 21 | 11:00 am – 7:00 pm Eastern (One hour for lunch at 2:30 pm) \nTo earn a certificate\, you must actively participate and attend the entire training. \nUpon completion of this training\, you will be able to\n\nIdentify signs and symptoms of child sexual abuse\nIdentify community stakeholders and define their roles in preventing child sexual abuse\nDefine Mandated Reporter and their legal and ethical responsibilities\nIdentify strengths and weaknesses of stakeholder current prevention practices\nCreate an action plan to improve the prevention of child sexual abuse within your organization/agency (internally) and throughout your community (externally)\n\nRegister through NCJTC\nRegister by August 18\, 2023.
