SUMMARY:IHS Trauma Lab
DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nOur world is hazardous. And our kids often get caught in the cross-fire. Whether the crisis is a terrorist act or as individual as a parent dying\, this lab will give hands-on approaches participants can use to help clients work through trauma issues. Sometimes\, as much as we try\, words in session\, words spoken in care\, often seem to fall on deaf ears. Or sometimes the opposite is true; words spoken trigger such strong emotions\, the client starts to relive the trauma. \nTrauma Lab is designed to help you develop Learning Bridges—hands-on practical approaches that can be used in clinical and non-clinical settings to help children and youth to process their trauma without the use of a lot of words. For example\, hand them a pencil and ask them to break it. The client may be able to relate their trauma experiences to the very real\, tangible broken pencil. At that point\, they may be better able to process the effects of trauma in their life. End that same session with a broken pencil by having them write or draw something and help them see that trauma does not ruin everything. \nThis intermediate-level training is appropriate for counselors\, social workers\, psychologists\, other helping professionals\, and foster caregivers working with children and youth who have experienced life-altering traumatic events. Participants will acquire helpful tools to better support the healing journey for those who have been traumatized. Jim is the founder of Still Light Seminars LLC\, a motivational training and consulting company; he has trained nationally and internationally focusing on the mental health\, and care of\, children and adolescents. He is also an adjunct instructor in Ashland University’s Founders School of Continuing Education. He develops online courses around behavioral interventions and understanding the mental health of students. Jim has also authored or co-authored 7 books and has written almost 100 articles. The Data Say “No” \nPresented by Brett Drake\, PhD | Tuesday\, September 10\, 2024 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. CT/2:00 – 3:00 p.m. ET \nAre Black and Hispanic children “overreported” to Child Protective Services (CPS)?  We present national data from CDC\, the Census and the National Data Archive on Child Abuse and Neglect.  We compare racial differences in child maltreatment reports to racial differences in a range of known risks (e.g. poverty) and outcomes (e.g. infant mortality).  We found that Black children are being reported to CPS at a rate lower than would be expected given their high exposure to risks and high levels of non-maltreatment negative outcomes.  Hispanic children are reported to CPS at a rate lower than their risk exposure would suggest\, but similar to their rates of negative outcomes\, such as infant mortality.  This is consistent with the well-known “Hispanic Paradox”.  We also used bivariate and multivariate statistics to determine if Black and Hispanic children are substantiated or placed more than White children once reported. DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nApproximately 50% of the population will experience some type of possibly traumatic event (e.g.\, exposure to violence in the home or community\, physical\, emotional or sexual abuse\, natural disaster\, violent death of a loved one\, etc.) during their lifetime.  Exposure to trauma significantly increases the risk of developing mental health disorders including Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)\, anxiety\, depression\, suicidal ideation and self-harm behaviors\, substance use\, among others. SUMMARY:Integrating Racial Socialization in TF-CBT Therapy for Black Youth & Family
DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nThe negative consequences of trauma (e.g.\, physical abuse) take a disproportionate toll on Black youth due to the compounding stress of unique race related stressors (e.g.\, witnessing police brutality in the media\, microaggressions). This workshop provides an overview of interpersonal and racial trauma; presents research on systemic\, organizational\, client\, and provider barriers and facilitators to mental health service utilization; and discusses strategies clinicians can PRACTICE (Psychoeducation\, Relaxation\, Affect identification and modulation\, Cognitive restructuring\, Trauma narrative\, In-vivo exposure\, Conjoint parent-child sessions\, Enhancing safety) to integrate racial socialization into treatment to help Black clients heal from interpersonal and racial stress and trauma.\nAbout the Trainer\nDr. Isha Metzger is an Assistant Professor of Psychology at the University of Georgia and Visiting Research Faculty at the Center for Interdisciplinary Research on AIDS’ at Yale University. Dr. Metzger earned her PhD in Clinical-Community Psychology from the University of South Carolina\, she completed her pre-doctoral internship at the Medical University of South Carolina\, and she received postdoctoral training both at the National Crime Victims Center and at Yale University. As Director of The EMPOWER Lab at UGA\, Dr. Metzger focuses on reducing mental health disparities through “Engaging Minorities in Prevention\, Outreach\, Wellness\, Education\, & Research.” Dr. Metzger’s systematic research program is aimed at elucidating the role of culturally specific risk (e.g.\, racial discrimination) and protective (e.g.\, racial socialization) factors to better inform cognitive-behavioral outcomes for Black youth receiving evidence-based services for interpersonal and racial stress and trauma in “real world” settings. Dr. Metzger is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist who offers award-winning instruction\, supervision\, training\, and consultation to students\, professionals\, and organizations across the nation on the delivery of evidence-based treatments for underserved individuals seeking mental health treatment for a range of problems. Additionally\, Dr. Metzger is an advocate for Black youth and families in the local community\, and she is both personally and professionally committed to illuminating and utilizing the individual and communal ability of Black Americans to heal from and thrive in spite of anti-Black racism.\nRegistration is Free!\nRegistered attendees will receive a Zoom link 1 week and 1 day before this training event starts.\nWe are excited to start the new year with this training. Gather new tools and resources for the most comprehensive case outcomes. \nLearning Objectives\n\nUnderstand current child pornography trends\nApply research discussing the relationship between contact offenses and child pornography\nConsider current legal issues relating to child pornography and child sexual abuse cases\nLeverage interview and interrogation techniques that maximize evidence discovery in sexual abuse cases\nUnderstand ICAC task force’s role in investigating child pornography\nConsider opportunities to enhance investigations through multi-disciplinary investigative strategies\n\nAbout the Trainers\nDavid Frattare Director of State Investigations / ICAC Commander\, Cuyahoga County Prosecutors Office\, Ohio Internet Crimes Against Children Task ForceDavid Frattare currently serves as the Statewide Commander for the Cuyahoga County Prosecutor’s Office\, Ohio Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force. Commander Frattare is responsible for the investigation\, coordination and supervision of investigations involving the sexual exploitation of children and serves as the national representative for the Internet Crimes Against Children program in Ohio. From 1997 to 2009\, Commander Frattare was employed as a Special Agent with the Pennsylvania Office of Attorney General’s Bureau of Criminal Investigation and Child Predator Unit. Commander Frattare is a Special Deputy with the Cuyahoga County Sheriff’s Office and a Task Force Officer with Homeland Security Investigations Cleveland. He is an Associate Instructor for the National Criminal Justice Training Center at Fox Valley Technical College\, a Law Enforcement Trainer for The Innocent Justice Foundation\, and a Senior Chaplain with the International Fellowship of Chaplains. \nPauline Renick has been in Law Enforcement for 37 years. Currently\, she is working as a crime analyst in the area of Internet Crimes Against Children. She also served as a Task Force Officer for the Department of Homeland Security Investigations. Her previous assignments included Mountain Bike Patrol\, Patrol Division\, D.A.R.E. Officer\, High School Resource Officer\, Field Training Officer and Master Patrol Officer. She has experience working cases of child sexual assault\, child abuse and domestic violence related crimes. She also worked these types of cases during her assignment as a Special Agent for the US Army Criminal Investigation Division Command (CID). She is the only female recipient of the Medal of Valor in the history of her department. Pauline is also a child forensic interviewer and involved in the community providing educational information to teens\, parents and specialized professions\, regarding the topic of the Internet Crimes Against Children \nRegister at NCJTC\nThe registration fee includes 16 hours of training\, program materials\, and instructional costs.
