SUMMARY:CalTrin | Problematic Sexual Behaviors in Children and Adolescents: The Do's and Don'ts for the Criminal Justice System
DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nWhen a child or adolescent sexually acts out it can be a scary experience for not just a parent\, but also for the provider working with the family\, especially if the child is justice system involved.  This webinar will first correct common myths and misconceptions about children who sexually act out (e.g.\, the supermajority of these children are highly responsive to treatment and are NOT pedophiles). \nThe second aspect of this webinar will be a walk-through of the evidence for how to treat these children and the likelihood of success (e.g.\, with appropriate\, evidence-based practices children 3 to 18 who engage in these behaviors are up to 95% successful in treatment and do not sexually reoffend again).  Finally\, the last part of this presentation will tie parts one and two together to answer the question of how providers in the criminal justice system can best help these families as well as keep the community and public safe. \nDuring this webinar\, participants will discuss: \n\nThe “rules of thumb” for addressing problematic sexual behaviors (PSBs) in youth.\nMethods that are contraindicated and counter-therapeutic for intervening in youth with PSBs.\nSpecific resources (e.g.\, NCSBY) and interventions (e.g.\, PSB-CBT) that are effective in helping youth and families impacted by PSBs.\n\nRegister Through CalTrin\n

SUMMARY:Zero Abuse Project Abusive Head Trauma and Child Death: A Symposium for Prosecutors
DESCRIPTION:Symposium Overview\nAs prosecutors grapple with the repercussions of an increase in physical abuse and abusive head trauma\, it is critical to provide training to improve the overall quality of the criminal investigation and prosecution of these complicated cases. \nIn response to these trends\, Zero Abuse Project and the New York Prosecutors Training Institute will jointly host an in-person training for prosecutors dedicated solely to the topics of abusive head trauma and child death. The training will use multidisciplinary subject matter experts from the field to address topics such as medical findings and literature\, investigation techniques\, improved multidisciplinary approach\, preparation and direct examination of the state’s experts\, preparation and cross-examination of defense experts\, pre-trial litigation\, and topics around professional well-being. \nTopics will include the latest in abusive head trauma science and medical evidence\, investigating deaths involving medically complex children\, corroborating crime scenes in child death cases\, and more! \nRegister through Zero Abuse Project\nThere is no registration fee for the symposium. DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nThe Minnesota Alliance on Crime is presenting a training with Rana Alexander\, Esq. of Standpoint where participants will learn about a new option for Minnesota victims in 2024 that allows for the court to prohibit an individual’s possession or purchase of firearms. \nEffective January 1\, 2024\, Minnesota law allows certain people to request an order from the court to prohibit someone from purchasing or possessing a firearm. This type of order is called an Extreme Risk Protection Order (ERPO). Although the term is not used in the Minnesota law\, laws that authorize these types of orders are often called “red flag” laws. An ERPO may be issued if a person poses a significant danger of bodily harm to others and/or is at significant risk of suicide if they possess a firearm. Presenter Rana Alexander\, Esq. of Standpoint will explain the new law as well as how it will be handled by the courts and law enforcement. SUMMARY:Normal is Normal: Effective Use of Medical Evidence in the Prosecution of Child Sexual Abuse Cases

A majority of the exams will be “normal” and that evidence can be used to corroborate a child’s statement using expert medical testimony. The testimony of the expert can also be used to explain anatomy which gives prosecutors medical evidence to argue issues of penetration. \nLearning Objectives \nGain a comprehensive understanding of the process and protocol involved in conducting a pediatric sexual assault examination.\nUtilize “typical” examination findings to validate and reinforce a child’s disclosure of sexual assault.\nCultivate expertise in preparing medical witnesses and effectively employing their testimony to establish the element of penetration in a sexual assault case. \nAbout Presenter\nKathleen Nolan – Senior Attorney \nKathleen Nolan is a Senior Attorney with Zero Abuse Project. She joined the team in May of 2021.  She brings over 15 years of experience as a Prosecutor in the area of Child Protection. \nKathleen previously served as the Chief of the Children’s Justice Division in the Madison County State’s Attorney’s Office in Madison County\, Illinois. She was appointed to that role in 2015 after joining the office in 2013. The Children’s Justice Division handled the charging and prosecution of all child victim cases in the county including physical abuse\, sexual assault and child deaths. Her role as Chief of the Division also involved mentoring and training the attorneys she supervised. She also created and presented specialized trainings for members of the Madison County Multi-Disciplinary Team including police\, forensic interviewers and Department of Children and Family Services workers. \nRegister through ZAP

SUMMARY:Normal is Normal: Effective Use of Medical Evidence in the Prosecution of Child Sexual Abuse Cases

A majority of the exams will be “normal” and that evidence can be used to corroborate a child’s statement using expert medical testimony. The testimony of the expert can also be used to explain anatomy which gives prosecutors medical evidence to argue issues of penetration. \nLearning Objectives \nGain a comprehensive understanding of the process and protocol involved in conducting a pediatric sexual assault examination.\nUtilize “typical” examination findings to validate and reinforce a child’s disclosure of sexual assault.\nCultivate expertise in preparing medical witnesses and effectively employing their testimony to establish the element of penetration in a sexual assault case. \nAbout Presenter\nKathleen Nolan – Senior Attorney \nKathleen Nolan is a Senior Attorney with Zero Abuse Project. She joined the team in May of 2021.  She brings over 15 years of experience as a Prosecutor in the area of Child Protection. \nKathleen previously served as the Chief of the Children’s Justice Division in the Madison County State’s Attorney’s Office in Madison County\, Illinois. She was appointed to that role in 2015 after joining the office in 2013. The Children’s Justice Division handled the charging and prosecution of all child victim cases in the county including physical abuse\, sexual assault and child deaths. Her role as Chief of the Division also involved mentoring and training the attorneys she supervised. DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nNational Criminal Justice Training Center (NCJTC) of Fox Valley Technical College is hosting a training opportunity for professionals in law enforcement\, prosecution\, and related court officials with Detective Edward Merritt. \nTechnology impacts almost every type of investigation today. Uncover the information technology users knowingly and unknowingly leave behind when accessing and using electronic devices. Learn how to covertly strengthen your investigations by gathering personal\, public\, and open-source data. Discuss techniques to locate evidence through technologies that can benefit any investigation. This training is only for law enforcement\, prosecution\, and court-related officials. \nUpon completion of this training\, you’ll be able to: \n\nUnderstand the means by which a person leaves a digital “trail” for investigators on multiple digital devices\nExamine how to interpret reports of analyzed devices\nApply practices in extracting device histories for investigations\nIdentify methods to complete research warrants with open-source and social media providers\n\nAbout the Trainer\nEdward Merritt – Detective\, Criminal Investigations Division\, Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office  \nDetective Merritt is a 22 year veteran with a law enforcement agency in South East Tennessee. He is currently assigned to the criminal investigations division where he primarily works cases involving internet crimes against children. In addition to his current assignment\, he serves as a technical adviser to his department’s hostage negotiations team and is the team leader for the sheriff’s underwater recovery team (S.U.R.T.). He is a P.O.S.T. certified Child Abuse Instructor and has received training in Advanced Investigation and Prosecution of Child Abuse and Exploitation through the National Advocacy Center. Since 2008 he has attended training in Modern Internet Communications and Cell phone investigations from the FBI and a number of the nation’s private vendors. He is a strong supporter of training in the proper seizure of mobile devices and hopes to one day see a national standard in testifying to cell site location information. \nRegister through NCJTC

DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nMinnesota Children’s Alliance is excited to host this training with Zero Abuse Project on trauma-informed care across the justice system.\nAfter learning about Adverse Child Experiences (The ACE Study)\, most professionals want the next steps. Creating trauma-informed space and training staff to respond to behaviors linked to trauma will strengthen relationships. Throughout the justice system\, from disclosure to verdict\, it can be triggering\, traumatizing\, and re-traumatizing for victims and families. This session will share steps to improve the environment in order to create safe spaces\, recognize and identify behaviors that impact disclosure to testimony\, and ensure that clients feel listened to and their experiences acknowledged.\nLearning Objectives\n\n\n\nUnderstand how trauma may impact disclosure and cooperation with the justice system.\nLearn ways to create/change or update environments to become trauma safe.\nCreate strategies and tools to enhance relationships with victims and families\n\nAbout the Presenter\nTomiko Mackey is a licensed clinical social worker who has provided services to children\, adolescents\, and adults for more than 20. Tomiko worked at Family Crisis Services\, a children’s advocacy and rape crisis center\, in Oxford\, Mississippi for 22 years as a therapist\, forensic interviewer and clinical director\, supervising the forensic interview\, family advocate and the mental health programs. Tomiko has trained countless professionals in the art of forensic interviewing using the ChildFirst Forensic Interview Protocol. Through the National Children’s Alliance and Baylor University\, Tomiko trains mental health providers throughout the nation in the use of evidence-based assessments. \nTomiko Mackey earned her Master of Social Work degree\, with a concentration in children\, youth and families\, from California State University\, Long Beach. She is an EMDR trained and certified TF-CBT clinician. DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nThe right to give a victim impact statement is one of Minnesota’s most important statutory crime victim rights. It represents one of the few times that victims have a voice in the criminal prosecution process and can speak to the impact of the crime. The process for submitting a victim impact statement prior to sentencing varies across the state\, and the path that the victim impact statement takes once submitted has implications for the victim. \nThis presentation will provide an overview of victim impact statements and how they get processed and presented\, with an emphasis on the important role of community-based and government-based advocates in educating victims and assisting them with preparing their statements. DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nThis Indian Child Welfare Act (ICWA) training is designed to provide the foundational information necessary to comply with both the letter and spirit of the ICWA. The training also provides substantive law and practice skills necessary to improve outcomes for Indian children and their families. The training covers the background leading to the ICWA requirements\, the 2016 Federal Regulations\, 2016 Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) Guidelines\, Minnesota Indian Family Preservation Act (MIFPA)\, and Minnesota Tribal/State Agreement (TSA). \nThis training is hosted through the Children’s Justice Initiative.
