SUMMARY:IHS | Intrafamilial Child Torture: Victim Impact and Professional Intervention
DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nIntrafamilial Child Torture (ICT) is a severe form of child abuse where parents or caregivers torture their own children. This often includes the perpetration of physical\, sexual\, and psychological torture and malicious neglect used as tactics to meet the psychopathological needs of the caregiver. ICT presents with unique family dynamics and perpetrator psychopathology that is different from typical maltreatment. It is often missed or misbelieved due to the extreme nature of the harm and sophistication of the perpetrator. Many ICT cases are not discovered until there has been a child fatality\, but we can learn from these cases\, intervene\, and prevent future fatalities. This training will provide a brief review of “What is ICT?”\, discuss the impact of ICT on children\, give recommendations for the many fields involved in child protection\, and provide an overview of 15 clinical and non-clinical interventions that have been helpful for ICT survivors. \nThis training is designed for the intermediate to advanced level professional\, but beginners and students are encouraged to attend to listen and observe. This training will combine lecture\, Q&A\, group discussion\, and real-life case examples. \nLearning Objectives\n\nExplain how developmental trauma impacts ICT survivors.\nAdvocate for the use of meaningful interdisciplinary collaboration on ICT cases in their community.\nDescribe one clinical and one non-clinical intervention that has been helpful for ICT survivors.\n\nAbout the Trainer\nPamela J. Miller\, JD\, MSW\, LISW-S\, is a clinical social worker and attorney with expertise in trauma and child abuse law. Since 2019\, she has led the Child Maltreatment Policy Resource Center’s Intrafamilial Child Torture (ICT) initiative\, co-authoring policy papers\, training professionals\, and providing legal counsel in state supreme court cases on child torture. Ms. Miller is a Certified Trauma Practitioner with advanced training in the Neurosequential Model of Therapeutics\, Body-Based Trauma Treatment\, and Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy\, along with training in PCIT/CARE\, Child-Centered Play Therapy\, and Attachment-Based Play Therapy. She has served as a psychotherapist\, an attorney-GAL for maltreated children\, and held executive roles in public mental health. \nMs. Miller earned her JD/MSW from the University of Cincinnati and her law degree from Ohio State University Moritz College of Law\, where she was a Moritz Merit Scholar and recipient of the Bergstrom Fellowship from the University of Michigan College of Law. DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nHow do service providers know they are making a difference in the lives of people impacted by crime? The best way to learn this is to ask the victims who received the services. \niMPRoVE is a free tool developed with funding and support from the U.S. Office for Victims of Crime\, Office on Violence Against Women\, and the National Institute of Justice that helps providers to do just that. It is an online platform that helps any and all types of victim-serving organizations create a customized survey for collecting feedback from victims on the services they received. It also helps programs see their results through an interactive data dashboard. \nThis presentation examines the importance of measuring service outcomes\, the range of intended outcomes that victim service providers strive to achieve\, and how providers can use this free outcome measurement platform and survey tool to learn from survivors about the ways services changed their lives. DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nThis webinar series will provide an in-depth overview of human trafficking. Webinar attendees will gain an understanding of how human trafficking occurs and how victims are recruited/conscripted. The roots of human trafficking will be examined along with the current situation. An analysis of laws governing human trafficking will be explored. SUMMARY:MACMH Changing the Narrative on Mental Health and Suicide
DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nTalking about mental health and suicide can be an uncomfortable and uncertain topic that brings up different feelings\, beliefs\, and attitudes. This session empowers individuals to begin conversations and change perceptions toward hope\, resilience\, and a more supportive narrative around mental health. \nThroughout the session\, participants will engage in dialog about being intentional in the words we are using. Certain ways of talking about mental health and suicide can alienate members of any community\, sensationalize the issue\, contribute to a decrease in help-seeking behavior\, or even present suicide as a glamorous\, preferred way of dealing with problems. \nHaving healthy conversations about mental health and suicide avoids harmful messages that might increase suicide risk in individuals or undermine suicide prevention goals. By doing this safely\, it reduces stigma\, mitigates risks\, promotes help-seeking\, and respects all individuals. \nObjectives\n\nPromote language that respects the dignity of individuals and emphasizes compassion\, including using terms that reduce stigma and foster open\, supportive conversations about mental health and suicide prevention.\nRecognize the signs for people at risk and how to respond when you identify someone who is in distress or suicidal.\nEmpower individuals to begin conversations and change perceptions toward hope\, resilience\, and a more supportive narrative around mental health.\n\nAbout the Presenter\nDeborah Cavitt\, MS\, CFPS\, is the Manager of Education and Advocacy in MACMH’s Youth and Family team. Her passion is to educate\, coach\, and empower youth and families to give them hope\, knowledge\, and resources to promote resilience\, recovery\, and mental wellness. \nAs a parent with lived experience navigating the systems of mental health care for her children\, Deb understands the importance of family peer support during tough times. At MACMH\, she has trained many parents and caregivers to be Certified Family Peer Specialists to support families of children with diagnosed mental health disorders. Before coming to MACMH\, Deb was a classroom teacher for twenty years and a prevention specialist for a substance abuse agency. Her bachelor’s degree is in education and psychology and my master’s degree is in human service with specializations in mental health and substance abuse counseling. ICT presents with unique family dynamics and perpetrator psychopathology that is different from typical physical and psychological maltreatment. It is often missed or misbelieved due to the extreme nature of the harm\, sophistication of the perpetrator\, and presence among all socio-economic classes\, according to clinical data. \nThis training is designed for the intermediate to advanced level professionals\, but beginners and students are encouraged to attend to listen and observe. Since 2019\, she has led the Child Maltreatment Policy Resource Center’s Intrafamilial Child Torture (ICT) initiative\, co-authoring policy papers\, training professionals\, and providing legal counsel in state supreme court cases on child torture. Ms. Miller is a Certified Trauma Practitioner with advanced training in the Neurosequential Model of Therapeutics\, Body-Based Trauma Treatment\, and Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy\, along with training in PCIT/CARE\, Child-Centered Play Therapy\, and Attachment-Based Play Therapy. She has served as a psychotherapist\, an attorney-GAL for maltreated children\, and held executive roles in public mental health. \nMs. Miller earned her JD/MSW from the University of Cincinnati and her law degree from Ohio State University Moritz College of Law\, where she was a Moritz Merit Scholar and recipient of the Bergstrom Fellowship from the University of Michigan College of Law. SUMMARY:First Witness Failure to Protect or Protective Factors?
DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nFor professionals working with children disclosing abuse\, it is important to understand dynamics of domestic violence to be able to be a part of an effective investigation. Understanding that domestic abuse co-occurs at a substantially high rate alongside child abuse enhances child abuse professionals’ ability to do their jobs in a holistic way. In this session\, participants will learn the barriers that victims of domestic violence face in leaving an abusive relationship\, specifically when children are involved\, and how system intervention may inadvertently cause additional barriers. Additionally\, the training will discuss barriers that children face to disclosing their own victimization in forensic interviews when family violence is present in the home. Trainees will examine protective factors that supportive caregivers have put in place to keep their children and themselves safe\, as well as how systems professionals can best support families experiencing these types of victimization utilizing a multidisciplinary team approach. \nRegister Through First Witness\n

SUMMARY:NCJTC Child Sex Trafficking: From Suspicion to Disclosure
DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nLearn basic techniques and strategies to enhance the likelihood of obtaining information from possible victims of child sex trafficking. Compare and contrast typical child sexual abuse cases with child sex trafficking (CST) cases and address the different points of entry into the criminal justice and welfare system for CST victims. Understand various disciplines’ roles and responsibilities and how they can contribute to a positive outcome of the CST case. Examine question strategy\, interview dynamics\, language use\, and interview suggestions. Discuss the business model of child sex trafficking as it relates to a variety of crimes\, including the use of child sexual abuse material (CSAM).
