SUMMARY:First Witness Failure to Protect or Protective Factors?
DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nFor professionals working with children disclosing abuse\, it is important to understand dynamics of domestic violence to be able to be a part of an effective investigation. Understanding that domestic abuse co-occurs at a substantially high rate alongside child abuse enhances child abuse professionals’ ability to do their jobs in a holistic way. In this session\, participants will learn the barriers that victims of domestic violence face in leaving an abusive relationship\, specifically when children are involved\, and how system intervention may inadvertently cause additional barriers. Additionally\, the training will discuss barriers that children face to disclosing their own victimization in forensic interviews when family violence is present in the home. Trainees will examine protective factors that supportive caregivers have put in place to keep their children and themselves safe\, as well as how systems professionals can best support families experiencing these types of victimization utilizing a multidisciplinary team approach. \nRegister Through First Witness\n

SUMMARY:Justice Clearinghouse | Trauma and Uncertainty: Supporting and Sustaining Self and Others During Times of Change
DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nAs a human being living in a world of constant change\, we are being asked to face and wrestle with multiple layers of grief and trauma: our own\, our communities\, our country\, and the world. During times of uncertainty and change\, many people experience heightened anxiety. Additionally\, working with individuals impacted by traumatic events (homicide\, domestic violence\, child abuse\, etc) increases exposure to grief and trauma and can result in feelings of overwhelm and burnout. Understanding how the brain and body are impacted by the cumulative events equips us to better understand our response and utilize tools to mitigate longer-term impacts. \nThis webinar will explore the body’s and brain’s response to uncertainty through a trauma lens and provide skills and strategies that can be utilized immediately to help sustain oneself in the work. \nLearning Objectives\n\nto identify the body’s response to uncertainty and trauma exposure\nto identify three strategies to tend to the body’s physical response to trauma exposure\nto discuss the clinical benefits of practicing self-compassion to sustain oneself in hard times.\n\nRegister Through Justice Clearinghouse\n

SUMMARY:NCAC Preparation and Adaptations for Interviewing Children with a Disability
DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nChildren with a disability are at high risk for victimization. Forensic interviewers well trained in their discipline may lack confidence when speaking with a child with a disability\, as it is unrealistic to expect that an interviewer be well-versed in the impact of the wide variety of disabilities on a child’s behavioral\, cognitive\, linguistic\, and emotional functioning. This training will address pre-interview preparation\, collaboration with investigative partners\, interview adaptations\, and the importance of critical thinking decisions through the forensic interview. \nThis training is recommended for forensic interviewers who have developed some comfort and flexibility with the continuum of questioning strategies and the phases of a forensic interview. \nRegister through NCAC\nRegister by Monday\, August 25\, 2025!

SUMMARY:Justice Clearinghouse | Never Too Young: Impact on Children of ALL Ages Witnessing Intimate Partner Violence
DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nIntimate Partner Violence between parents is often brushed aside when determining what is best for the children\, with family members\, law enforcement\, custody conciliators\, and even judges failing to weigh the non-abusive parent’s concerns if the children were not targets of the abuse itself. \nThe research into long- and short-term negative outcomes in children’s mental\, physical\, and social health is extensive and clear: Witnessing IPV in the home puts all children at greatly increased risk of a number of known harms\, some of which may surprise even the most seasoned advocates and first responders. \nLearning Objectives\n\nArticulate specific risks for children exposed to IPV from infancy to school age to teens and young adults.\nHelp survivors take appropriate protective measures for their children who have been exposed to IPV in the home.\nBetter advocate for children whose families are involved in the justice system due to IPV.\n\nRegister Through Justice Clearinghouse\n

SUMMARY:NCAC Supervision of Child Forensic Interviewers
DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nForensic interviewing of children and adolescents is a complex process that requires specialized skills\, including the ability to support emotionally distressed children while collecting accurate information about potential criminal events. While intensive training and peer review help build interviewing skills\, a more strategic approach is needed to sustain and enhance those skills. \nEven skilled interviewers may lack abilities in supervision and coaching. This training will arm supervisors with new knowledge and skills to develop to support interviewers’ growth in four key competency areas: question typology\, protocol adherence\, social support\, and critical thinking.  Adaptations will be provided for interviewers at all levels. \nThis training is open to those having previous and/or ongoing experience in conducting forensic interviews and are currently responsible for the skill development and support of other interviewers. \nRegister through NCAC\nRegister by Friday\, August 11\, 2025!

Strong emphasis will be placed on myths (e.g.\, when a provider says “your child has reactive attachment and they can’t get better from that”) versus facts (e.g.\, how traumatic stress impacts early childhood development) for this age range. Additionally\, concrete tools and resources (e.g.\, specific treatments) to support caregivers of these children will be discussed. \nRegister Through CalTrin\n
