SUMMARY:MAC | Transgender 101 for Professionals Working with Survivors Who Identify as Transgender
DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nPersons who are transgender have become far more visible\, which is reflective of greater societal acceptance. Still\, of the letters in the “LGBTQ+ alphabet” (lesbian\, gay\, bisexual\, transgender\, queer/questioning\, “other identities”)\, the “Ts” (transgender persons) more often face unique challenges relative to personal relationships\, public interactions\, and many other things that cisgender (non-transgender) persons take for granted. \nMany of the challenges that “trans” and nonbinary individuals face occur when interacting with governmental entities\, particularly law enforcement and the justice system. Gender expansive humans are both fearful and distrustful of those with power who can adversely affect their lives\, particularly when they are crime victims or witnesses. Certainly\, while many professionals are well-intentioned and compassionate\, there is always a risk that their life experiences and biases may come into play when interacting with trans or nonbinary people. \nWhat steps can professionals working with crime victims/survivors take to make trans and nonbinary people feel welcomed and accepted? What actions or words should they avoid? How does “passing” or not “passing” or the absence of legal rights in many states play into a transgender person’s daily life? And what are the mental health effects of the President of the United States attacking trans humans? \nJoin national speaker\, diversity consultant\, author\, and retired civil trial lawyer Ellen “Ellie” Krug as she shares what it means to be transgender and offers tips on how to be inclusive toward anyone who identifies as trans or nonbinary. DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nChildren may witness situational or chronic violence in several ways including domestic violence in the home\, living in a violent neighborhood\, and/or witnessing an assault or murder of another person. Even when a child is not physically harmed\, witnessing incidents of violence takes a toll on their body\, heart\, and mind. Memories may be fragmented\, and recall can trigger strong physiological and emotional reactions. If a child is potentially a key witness to the events that happened\, it is important that they are interviewed in a sensitive and timely manner. DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nThe ChildFirst® Forensic Interview Protocol brings the field into the classroom\, enhancing the education of front-line child abuse response professionals. This training is designed for investigative teams of law enforcement officers\, social workers\, prosecutors\, child protection attorneys\, and forensic interviewers. \nStudents receive training on the ChildFirst® Forensic Interview Protocol\, which includes child development\, memory and suggestibility\, testifying in court\, legal issues\, and preparing children for court. This training incorporates lecture and discussion\, review of electronically recorded interviews\, skill-building exercises\, and an interview practicum. \nThe ChildFirst® Forensic Interview Protocol is an NCA-approved forensic interview protocol for accreditation. \nThis training will be held in-person at the First Witness Capstan Training Center in Duluth\, MN. \nScholarships are available for county\, tribes\, and other local professionals responsible for child maltreatment investigations and prosecutions in the State of Minnesota. When selecting from our payment options\, choose “I am applying for a Minnesota Dept. of Health and Human Services (DHS) Scholarship.” Recipients are responsible for any other costs of attending this training\, including travel\, lodging\, and meals. SUMMARY:IHS | Supporting LGBTQ+ Youth: Challenges\, Resources\, and Professional Resilience
DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nLGBTQ+ youth\, like all young people\, require environments that nurture their physical\, emotional\, and psychological well-being. They face unique challenges due to stigma\, discrimination\, and lack of understanding\, which can impact their developmental outcomes. LGBTQ+ youth can be at higher risk for suicidal ideation\, self-harm\, running away\, homelessness\, abuse\, and commercial sexual exploitation . These youth along with their families\, benefit from the support of compassionate\, informed professionals to provide services\, information\, and advocacy. \nThe LGBTQ+ community intersects with many other identities and communities. It is imperative that professionals maintain awareness of the intersectional needs of youth. In addition\, professionals supporting the needs of LGBTQ+ youth are having to factor in the rise of political initiatives to reduce or ban support of this population. This leads to ethical dilemmas and the risk of moral injury to the professional. Youth need consistent caring support from adults who are knowledgeable\, well-resourced\, and resilient. Professional self-care is critical so that adults can continue to provide ethical\, responsive care to the diversity of youth in the LGBTQ+ community. \nThis intermediate-level course is appropriate for social workers\, counselors\, psychologists\, and other human services professionals serving LGBTQ+ youth. \nLearning Objectives \n\nDescribe the unique challenges faced by LGBTQ+ youth due to stigma\, discrimination\, and lack of understanding including intersectional identities.\nIdentify a variety of approaches and interventions that support the developmental needs of LGBTQ+ youth.\nCreate a list of resources for support\, advocacy\, and information to benefit LGBTQ+ youth\, their families\, and their communities.\nDiscuss the awareness and implementation of professional self-care so that providers can maintain the resilience needed to provide ethical\, responsive care to LGBTQ+ youth.\n\nRegister Through IHS\nThis training course if free but $10 to receive continuing education credits.

DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nThis training teaches the CornerHouse Forensic Interview Protocol™ a credible\, reliable\, developmentally flexible and non-traumatic forensic interview protocol appropriate for children\, adolescents and vulnerable adults involved in a sexual abuse investigation. DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nAvoid potential conflict both professionally and personally by learning to organize your thinking and respond calmly. Consider the approaches you can take to prevent and respond to verbal conflict. This course will explore the communication process\, conflict prevention\, and help you understand why conflicts occur. Instruction will also cover certain circumstances in which verbal de-escalation techniques may not be appropriate\, and provide techniques to resolve such conflicts. Join us to learn how de-escalation techniques and communication skills can potentially defuse tense situations and lead to more successful outcomes. SUMMARY:Justice Clearinghouse Adults and Childhood Trauma
DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nAdults who experienced trauma in their childhood live with the physical\, emotional and behavioral consequences of that trauma throughout life. In some cases\, these adults do not recognize that they were exposed to trauma in their childhood. The consequences of this exposure may have led to unhealthy patterns in the adults’ life that they simply accept as ‘normal’ for them.  This webinar will present ways in which children are exposed to trauma\, how that trauma manifests or is exhibited in a person’s life in adulthood\, and healthy interventions for that adult to be able to mitigate\, alter or cope with the consequences of childhood trauma. \nRegister Through Justice Clearinghouse\n
