SUMMARY:NCAC Strategies for Interviewing a Reluctant Child Witness
DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\n\nForensic interviewers encounter a variety of forms of reluctance in child witnesses. Forensic interviewers are challenged to adopt a single strategy as reluctance is often the result of a complex interaction of factors including external and internal influences. SUMMARY:CornerHouse Basic Forensic Interview Training
DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nThis training teaches the CornerHouse Forensic Interview Protocol™ a credible\, reliable\, developmentally flexible and non-traumatic forensic interview protocol appropriate for children\, adolescents and vulnerable adults involved in a sexual abuse investigation. Training methods include lecture and discussion\, review of CornerHouse video-recorded interviews\, skill-building exercises\, and an interview practicum. These courses are designed for teams of forensic interviewers\, child protection workers\, tribal social service investigators\, law enforcement officers and prosecuting attorneys. Participants are encouraged to attend as a multidisciplinary team. Courses are outcome-based and include an exam upon completion. \nThis training is taking place in-person in Roseville\, MN. Each day training will take place from 8:00am-4:30pm Central Time. Friday will be a half day from 8:00am-1:00pm. A continental breakfast is offered each day as well as lunch on Monday and Thursday. \nRegister through CornerHouse\nPlease note that in consideration for the safety of CornerHouse staff\, other participants\, and our community\, we highly encourage all in-person attendees be vaccinated and test for Covid-19 before attending training. SUMMARY:IHS | Human Sexuality 101: The Fundamentals for Working with Children & Families
DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nDo issues and questions about sexuality show up in your work\, sometimes when you least expect it? Do you feel that you missed out on good sex education when you were in school or just need a good refresher and update? Are you trying to understand if it makes sense for grade school kids to choose their pronouns?   Or do you work with sexually abused children and youth and wonder about the impact on their developmental journey? This 2-hour course explores the topics of sexual development\, anatomy\, and physiology and places them in current social contexts\, and will help prepare you to better support your clients as they pass through developmental stages and face challenges along the way. \nThis live\, virtual course is appropriate for social workers\, counselors\, psychologists\, and other human services professionals working with children and families. The training will include didactic lecture\, group discussion\, and time for Q and A. The workshop is led by a sex-educator/social worker who has been working to promote sexual health and safety for decades! Dr. Rosenzweig will combine important factual material with exercises to help improve your comfort level. This training is designed for investigative teams of law enforcement officers\, social workers\, prosecutors\, child protection attorneys\, and forensic interviewers. \nStudents receive training on the ChildFirst® Forensic Interview Protocol\, which includes child development\, memory and suggestibility\, testifying in court\, legal issues\, and preparing children for court. This training incorporates lecture and discussion\, review of electronically recorded interviews\, skill-building exercises\, and an interview practicum. \nThe ChildFirst® Forensic Interview Protocol is an NCA-approved forensic interview protocol for accreditation. \nThis training will be held in-person at the First Witness Capstan Training Center in Duluth\, MN. \nScholarships are available for county\, tribes\, and other local professionals responsible for child maltreatment investigations and prosecutions in the State of Minnesota. When selecting from our payment options\, choose “I am applying for a Minnesota Dept. of Health and Human Services (DHS) Scholarship.” Recipients are responsible for any other costs of attending this training\, including travel\, lodging\, and meals. This session will discuss how to be more trauma-informed within your current advocacy practice and perspective. In this session we will consider how childhood and historical trauma impacts both the physical and mental health of the families we work with\, as well as the power of resiliency factors. Participants will also take this information and learn how to apply this knowledge to their advocacy practice from the first meeting through any ongoing advocacy\, including community advocacy. DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nThis training teaches the CornerHouse Forensic Interview Protocol™ a credible\, reliable\, developmentally flexible and non-traumatic forensic interview protocol appropriate for children\, adolescents and vulnerable adults involved in a sexual abuse investigation. Training methods include lecture and discussion\, review of CornerHouse video-recorded interviews\, skill-building exercises\, and an interview practicum. These courses are designed for teams of forensic interviewers\, child protection workers\, tribal social service investigators\, law enforcement officers and prosecuting attorneys. Participants are encouraged to attend as a multidisciplinary team. Courses are outcome-based and include an exam upon completion. \nThis training is taking place in-person in Roseville\, MN. Each day training will take place from 8:00am-4:30pm Central Time. Friday will be a half day from 8:00am-1:00pm. The Data Say “No” \nPresented by Brett Drake\, PhD | Tuesday\, September 10\, 2024 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. CT/2:00 – 3:00 p.m. ET \nAre Black and Hispanic children “overreported” to Child Protective Services (CPS)?  We present national data from CDC\, the Census and the National Data Archive on Child Abuse and Neglect.  We compare racial differences in child maltreatment reports to racial differences in a range of known risks (e.g. poverty) and outcomes (e.g. infant mortality).  We found that Black children are being reported to CPS at a rate lower than would be expected given their high exposure to risks and high levels of non-maltreatment negative outcomes.  Hispanic children are reported to CPS at a rate lower than their risk exposure would suggest\, but similar to their rates of negative outcomes\, such as infant mortality.  This is consistent with the well-known “Hispanic Paradox”.  We also used bivariate and multivariate statistics to determine if Black and Hispanic children are substantiated or placed more than White children once reported. SUMMARY:Zero Abuse Project | Advanced Forensic Interview Training: Dolls & Diagrams for Practice\, Investigation\, and Prosecution
DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nThis virtual training provides multidisciplinary team members an understanding of the research and proper use to assist with investigation and prosecution when forensic interviews include the use of interviewing aids of anatomical dolls and diagrams. \nWhile the practice of using anatomical dolls and diagrams is sometimes seen as contentious in the field of forensic interviewing\, research shows the appropriate use of dolls and diagrams within the guidance of a nationally recognized protocol can increase forensically relevant information and accuracy within the forensic interview. \nThis training will summarize relevant research on dolls and diagrams\, provide an overview of their purposeful and appropriate use in the forensic interview\, and address common defense challenges to the use of dolls and diagrams. This one-day advanced training includes practicum and scenario work for participants. \nLearning Objectives\n\nReview appropriate and purposeful practice regarding the use of dolls and diagrams in the forensic interview.\nincrease knowledge of the relevant and reflective research regarding the use of dolls and diagrams in the forensic interview.
