DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nThe ChildFirst® Forensic Interview Protocol brings the field into the classroom\, enhancing the education of front-line child abuse response professionals. This training is designed for investigative teams of law enforcement officers\, social workers\, prosecutors\, child protection attorneys\, and forensic interviewers. \nStudents receive training on the ChildFirst® Forensic Interview Protocol\, which includes child development\, memory and suggestibility\, testifying in court\, legal issues\, and preparing children for court. This training incorporates lecture and discussion\, review of electronically recorded interviews\, skill-building exercises\, and an interview practicum. \nThe ChildFirst® Forensic Interview Protocol is an NCA-approved forensic interview protocol for accreditation. \nThis training will be held in-person at the First Witness Capstan Training Center in Duluth\, MN. \nScholarships are available for county\, tribes\, and other local professionals responsible for child maltreatment investigations and prosecutions in the State of Minnesota. When selecting from our payment options\, choose “I am applying for a Minnesota Dept. of Health and Human Services (DHS) Scholarship.” Recipients are responsible for any other costs of attending this training\, including travel\, lodging\, and meals. This session will discuss how to be more trauma-informed within your current advocacy practice and perspective. In this session we will consider how childhood and historical trauma impacts both the physical and mental health of the families we work with\, as well as the power of resiliency factors. Participants will also take this information and learn how to apply this knowledge to their advocacy practice from the first meeting through any ongoing advocacy\, including community advocacy. SUMMARY:CornerHouse Basic Forensic Interview Training
DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nThis training teaches the CornerHouse Forensic Interview Protocol™ a credible\, reliable\, developmentally flexible and non-traumatic forensic interview protocol appropriate for children\, adolescents and vulnerable adults involved in a sexual abuse investigation. Training methods include lecture and discussion\, review of CornerHouse video-recorded interviews\, skill-building exercises\, and an interview practicum. These courses are designed for teams of forensic interviewers\, child protection workers\, tribal social service investigators\, law enforcement officers and prosecuting attorneys. Participants are encouraged to attend as a multidisciplinary team. Courses are outcome-based and include an exam upon completion. \nThis training is taking place in-person in Roseville\, MN. Each day training will take place from 8:00am-4:30pm Central Time. Friday will be a half day from 8:00am-1:00pm. A continental breakfast is offered each day as well as lunch on Monday and Thursday. \nRegister through CornerHouse\nPlease note that in consideration for the safety of CornerHouse staff\, other participants\, and our community\, we highly encourage all in-person attendees be vaccinated and test for Covid-19 before attending training. The Data Say “No” \nPresented by Brett Drake\, PhD | Tuesday\, September 10\, 2024 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. CT/2:00 – 3:00 p.m. ET \nAre Black and Hispanic children “overreported” to Child Protective Services (CPS)?  We present national data from CDC\, the Census and the National Data Archive on Child Abuse and Neglect.  We compare racial differences in child maltreatment reports to racial differences in a range of known risks (e.g. poverty) and outcomes (e.g. infant mortality).  We found that Black children are being reported to CPS at a rate lower than would be expected given their high exposure to risks and high levels of non-maltreatment negative outcomes.  Hispanic children are reported to CPS at a rate lower than their risk exposure would suggest\, but similar to their rates of negative outcomes\, such as infant mortality.  This is consistent with the well-known “Hispanic Paradox”.  We also used bivariate and multivariate statistics to determine if Black and Hispanic children are substantiated or placed more than White children once reported. DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nApproximately 50% of the population will experience some type of possibly traumatic event (e.g.\, exposure to violence in the home or community\, physical\, emotional or sexual abuse\, natural disaster\, violent death of a loved one\, etc.) during their lifetime.  Exposure to trauma significantly increases the risk of developing mental health disorders including Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)\, anxiety\, depression\, suicidal ideation and self-harm behaviors\, substance use\, among others. The objectives of this workshop are to: 1) Define what trauma and adverse childhood experiences are\, 2) Describe the impact of trauma and common warning signs/symptoms of trauma by developmental level; 3) Describe what trauma-informed care is and provide practical coping strategies to use with youth. \n*This training will be offered in Spanish \nAproximadamente 50% de la población experimentará algún tipo de evento posiblemente traumático (ej..\, exposición a violencia en el hogar o comunidad\, abuso físico\, emocional o sexual\, desastre natural\, muerte violenta de un ser querido\, etc.) durante la vida. DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nTrauma-informed practice (TIP) is a critical component of child forensic interviewing. TIPs can reduce the negative impact that forensic interviews could have on survivors. They can also help interviewers adapt their memory-based interviews to meet the needs of traumatized individuals. This two-part webinar series will examine the impact of trauma on the brain and help interviewers translate the research on trauma into actionable\, client-centered\, trauma-informed practices. \nPart 1: Trauma\, the Brain\, and the Investigation \nPart one will focus on the impact of trauma on the brain\, with special attention given to how trauma affects survivors during investigations and forensic interviews. SUMMARY:CornerHouse Basic Forensic Interview Training
DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nThis training teaches the CornerHouse Forensic Interview Protocol™ a credible\, reliable\, developmentally flexible and non-traumatic forensic interview protocol appropriate for children\, adolescents and vulnerable adults involved in a sexual abuse investigation. Training methods include lecture and discussion\, review of CornerHouse video-recorded interviews\, skill-building exercises\, and an interview practicum. These courses are designed for teams of forensic interviewers\, child protection workers\, tribal social service investigators\, law enforcement officers and prosecuting attorneys. Participants are encouraged to attend as a multidisciplinary team. Courses are outcome-based and include an exam upon completion. \nThis training is taking place in-person in Roseville\, MN. Each day training will take place from 8:00am-4:30pm Central Time. Friday will be a half day from 8:00am-1:00pm. DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nInvestigators and other practitioners advised to conduct minimal facts interviewing are often told to limit themselves to who\, what\, when\, and where.  But how?  Children are notoriously poor at estimating dates\, which means that “when” can pose difficulties.  Worse\, it can lead to estimates of dating that will lead to inconsistencies and impeachment of the child’s story. Furthermore\, children are reluctant to describe genital touch\, and often ill-equipped to specify the nature of the touch.  Again\, mistakes in eliciting the early report can easily lead to problems for the case down the road. Based on research in child interviewing and developmental psychology\, I’ll discuss how practitioners can avoid these pitfalls and conduct productive minimal facts interviews. \nAbout the Trainer\nThomas D. Lyon\, JD\, PhD \nThomas D. Lyon’s goal is to identify the most productive means of questioning children about abuse and violence. He is the Judge Edward J. and Ruey L. Guirado Chair in Law and Psychology at the University of Southern California Gould School of Law. Lyon is past-president of the American Psychological Association’s Section on Child Maltreatment (Division 37) and a former member of the Board of Directors of the American Professional Society on the Abuse of Children. Topics discussed will include dynamics of abuse and violence in the queer community\, barriers to service\, historical context and power dynamics\, risk factors\, and suggestions for building inclusion into your practice\, both on the individual level when interviewing queer youth. as well as the organizational level when working with queer youth in general. \nRegister at First Witness\nDHS Scholarship Eligibility\nScholarships are available for county\, tribes\, and other local professionals responsible for child maltreatment investigations and prosecutions in the State of Minnesota. When selecting from our payment options\, choose “I am applying for a Minnesota Dept. of Health and Human Services (DHS) Scholarship.” Recipients are responsible for any other costs of attending this training\, including travel\, lodging\, and meals.
