The Data Say “No” \nPresented by Brett Drake\, PhD | Tuesday\, September 10\, 2024 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. CT/2:00 – 3:00 p.m. ET \nAre Black and Hispanic children “overreported” to Child Protective Services (CPS)?  We present national data from CDC\, the Census and the National Data Archive on Child Abuse and Neglect.  We compare racial differences in child maltreatment reports to racial differences in a range of known risks (e.g. poverty) and outcomes (e.g. infant mortality).  We found that Black children are being reported to CPS at a rate lower than would be expected given their high exposure to risks and high levels of non-maltreatment negative outcomes.  Hispanic children are reported to CPS at a rate lower than their risk exposure would suggest\, but similar to their rates of negative outcomes\, such as infant mortality.  This is consistent with the well-known “Hispanic Paradox”.  We also used bivariate and multivariate statistics to determine if Black and Hispanic children are substantiated or placed more than White children once reported. SUMMARY:APSAC Trauma Informed Care (Spanish)
DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nApproximately 50% of the population will experience some type of possibly traumatic event (e.g.\, exposure to violence in the home or community\, physical\, emotional or sexual abuse\, natural disaster\, violent death of a loved one\, etc.) during their lifetime.  Exposure to trauma significantly increases the risk of developing mental health disorders including Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)\, anxiety\, depression\, suicidal ideation and self-harm behaviors\, substance use\, among others. The objectives of this workshop are to: 1) Define what trauma and adverse childhood experiences are\, 2) Describe the impact of trauma and common warning signs/symptoms of trauma by developmental level; 3) Describe what trauma-informed care is and provide practical coping strategies to use with youth. \n*This training will be offered in Spanish \nAproximadamente 50% de la población experimentará algún tipo de evento posiblemente traumático (ej..\, exposición a violencia en el hogar o comunidad\, abuso físico\, emocional o sexual\, desastre natural\, muerte violenta de un ser querido\, etc.) durante la vida. DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nInvestigators and other practitioners advised to conduct minimal facts interviewing are often told to limit themselves to who\, what\, when\, and where.  But how?  Children are notoriously poor at estimating dates\, which means that “when” can pose difficulties.  Worse\, it can lead to estimates of dating that will lead to inconsistencies and impeachment of the child’s story. Furthermore\, children are reluctant to describe genital touch\, and often ill-equipped to specify the nature of the touch.  Again\, mistakes in eliciting the early report can easily lead to problems for the case down the road. Based on research in child interviewing and developmental psychology\, I’ll discuss how practitioners can avoid these pitfalls and conduct productive minimal facts interviews. \nAbout the Trainer\nThomas D. DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nThe negative consequences of trauma (e.g.\, physical abuse) take a disproportionate toll on Black youth due to the compounding stress of unique race related stressors (e.g.\, witnessing police brutality in the media\, microaggressions). This workshop provides an overview of interpersonal and racial trauma; presents research on systemic\, organizational\, client\, and provider barriers and facilitators to mental health service utilization; and discusses strategies clinicians can PRACTICE (Psychoeducation\, Relaxation\, Affect identification and modulation\, Cognitive restructuring\, Trauma narrative\, In-vivo exposure\, Conjoint parent-child sessions\, Enhancing safety) to integrate racial socialization into treatment to help Black clients heal from interpersonal and racial stress and trauma.\nAbout the Trainer\nDr. Isha Metzger is an Assistant Professor of Psychology at the University of Georgia and Visiting Research Faculty at the Center for Interdisciplinary Research on AIDS’ at Yale University. Dr. Metzger earned her PhD in Clinical-Community Psychology from the University of South Carolina\, she completed her pre-doctoral internship at the Medical University of South Carolina\, and she received postdoctoral training both at the National Crime Victims Center and at Yale University. As Director of The EMPOWER Lab at UGA\, Dr. Metzger focuses on reducing mental health disparities through “Engaging Minorities in Prevention\, Outreach\, Wellness\, Education\, & Research.” Dr. Metzger’s systematic research program is aimed at elucidating the role of culturally specific risk (e.g.\, racial discrimination) and protective (e.g.\, racial socialization) factors to better inform cognitive-behavioral outcomes for Black youth receiving evidence-based services for interpersonal and racial stress and trauma in “real world” settings. Dr. Metzger is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist who offers award-winning instruction\, supervision\, training\, and consultation to students\, professionals\, and organizations across the nation on the delivery of evidence-based treatments for underserved individuals seeking mental health treatment for a range of problems. DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nForensic interviewers and multi-disciplinary partners recognize the shortcomings of strict adherence to a “one and done” interview approach. Research provides some clarification of reasons why a child may need more than one interview and limited recommendations for implementation\, leaving forensic interviewers and their investigative partners with little clarity about how to apply this information to day-to-day practice. This training will review supportive literature\, introduce a decision-making process for selecting appropriate cases\, and guidance for conducting follow-up forensic interviews. Recommendations for explaining and defending the multi-session approach are included. This training is recommended for forensic interviewers who have developed some comfort and flexibility with the continuum of questioning strategies and the phases of a forensic interview. \nRegister through NCAC\nRegister by Friday\, October 4\, 2024 \nCancellation Policy\nThe full registration fee is due by the fee deadline stated above in order to hold your spot. SUMMARY:NCJTC MDT Response to Child Sex Trafficking
DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nImprove multidisciplinary team (MDT) responses to child sex trafficking cases. Gather information about improving or establishing a formal MDT in your community. Identify gaps and develop short and long-term response plans with the help of subject matter experts. To attend this training\, you must be part of a multidisciplinary team and your team members must attend with you\, from a minimum of 5 to a maximum of 10. Each team member should register individually. To make your team easily identifiable\, all team members should use the same name for their team leader during the registration process. If you need assistance in building your team\, please contact our office at the number/email below. \nThis 3.5 day team-based training will guide existing Multidisciplinary Teams (MDT) to improve their response to Child Sex Trafficking (CST)\, as well as assist those who seek to establish a formal MDT in their communities to more effectively respond to CST cases. Subject matter experts will work with teams to identify gaps and develop short and long-term response plans. \nTo attend this training\, you must be part of a multidisciplinary team and your team members must attend with you\, from a minimum of 5 to a maximum of 10. If you need assistance in building your team\, please contact our office at the number/email below. \nAttendance at a course such as System Response to High Risk Victims-Child Sex Trafficking (HRV CST) or Investigative Strategies in Child Abduction Cases (ISCAC)\, or have a working knowledge of child sex trafficking is highly recommended. \nUpon completion of this training\, you will be able to: \n\nDifferentiate between responses to traditional child abuse and child sex trafficking cases\nutilize the components of an effective MDT for child sex trafficking\nRecognise and locate youth at risk victimization\nCreate a plan that encompasses strengths\, challenges and a direction for your MDT response to child sex trafficking\n\nRegister at NCJTC\nRegister by Friday\, September 6\, 2024 \nTuition/instructional costs\, as well as course materials\, are provided by the Missing and Exploited Children Training and Technical Assistance Program. For in-person training\, attendees are responsible for making and funding their costs of attendance\, including but not limited to lodging\, travel\, meals\, incidentals\, etc. \nThe Missing and Exploited Children Training and Technical Assistance Program (MEC Training and TA) through funding from the U.S. Department of Justice\, Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention\, is able to provide lodging assistance to a limited number of non-federal attendees. This assistance is based on need and is not guaranteed to every applicant. Priority will be given to those from historically underserved communities. DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nThis course empowers faith communities to recognize and respond to cases of sexual abuse\, physical abuse\, emotional abuse\, and neglect. Included are discussions detailing the impact of child abuse on a victim’s sense of spirituality and offering concrete suggestions for working with medical and mental health professionals to assist a child in coping with maltreatment. The course also discusses ideal child protection policies for a faith-based institution\, including handling a situation in which a convicted sex offender seeks to join a congregation. A review of various child abuse case scenarios and a discussion on appropriate and inappropriate responses allows for real-life problem-solving and feedback. \nWhy is this training important for every faith community? \n\n93% of sex offenders describe themselves as being ‘religious’\n20% of 2864 church leaders knew of at least one convicted sex offender who was attending or was a member of their church (Christianity Today 2010)\nChild abuse Survivor Quote: “I went online to every faith community in my area trying to find a place in which I felt safe to worship. SUMMARY:NCAC Cultivating the Forensic Interview Program: Support for CAC Executive Directors
DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nThe National Children’s Advocacy Center is presenting four monthly 90-minute virtual sessions that will include a maximum of ten CAC directors on how they can build a successful forensic interview program at their CACs. \nExecutive directors of Children’s Advocacy Centers (CAC) are key champions of child forensic interviewers. Many are responsible for recruiting new interviewers\, providing access to high-quality training and peer review and support\, and supervision; and sustaining and retaining those interviewers at their centers. However\, most CAC directors receive little to no training in forensic interviewing (i.e.\, general knowledge\, protocols\, research\, resources\, etc.)\, which impedes their ability to fully support the interviewers in their CAC. To meet the needs of CAC directors\, especially those newer to their positions\, the National Children’s Advocacy Center (NCAC) has developed a new training\, Cultivating the Forensic Interview Program: Support for CAC Executive Directors. \nFacilitated by Linda Cordisco Steele\, this consultation group for executive directors will cover the fundamentals of an effective child forensic interviewing program at a CAC\, the role of the interviewer\, and how to identify the strengths and needs of participants’ current forensic interviewing programs. Upon completion of the program\, executive directors will have developed an actionable plan to support their efforts to enhance the child forensic interviewing program at their respective CACs. \nTraining Format\nThis training will consist of four monthly 90-minute virtual sessions and will include a maximum of 10 CAC directors. The group’s smaller size will enable more interaction with and learning from other participants and the facilitator. These sessions will occur on the following Thursdays at 2:00 p.m. ET/1:00 p.m. CT/11:00 a.m. PT: \n\nThursday\, July 25\, 2024 | Topic: Discuss the current state of participants’ forensic interview program (what is going well\, what areas need attention\, and strategies for recruiting forensic interviewers.\nThursday\, August 15\, 2024 | Topic: Training\, mentoring\, and in-going coaching of forensic interviewers\nThursday\, September 26\, 2024 | Topic: Working effectively with multidisciplinary team (MDT) partners\nThursday\, October 17\, 2024 | Topic: Retention of forensic interviewers\n\nAbout the Trainer\nLinda Cordisco Steele\, MEd\, LPC\, is the Director of Forensic Interview Training and Services at the NCAC and a nationally recognized expert on forensic interviewing. Linda has been a forensic interviewer since 1993 and has worked at CACs in Alabama\, New Mexico\, and Kentucky. SUMMARY:APSAC Child Interview - Where Research Meets Practice
DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nTrauma-informed practice (TIP) is a critical component of child forensic interviewing. TIPs can reduce the negative impact that forensic interviews could have on survivors. They can also help interviewers adapt their memory-based interviews to meet the needs of traumatized individuals. This two-part webinar series will examine the impact of trauma on the brain and help interviewers translate the research on trauma into actionable\, client-centered\, trauma-informed practices. \nPart 1: Trauma\, the Brain\, and the Investigation \nPart one will focus on the impact of trauma on the brain\, with special attention given to how trauma affects survivors during investigations and forensic interviews. This knowledge is key to minimizing interviewer biases and errors. \nPart 11: Trauma-Informed Practice \nPart two will focus on the four pillars of a trauma-informed approach to forensic interviewing: Safety\, Predictability\, Empowerment\, and Compassion (SPEC).
