This webinar will explore the research behind interview rules and how following the rules can benefit the interviewee and the interviewer. Participants will learn about the most common interview rules and be provided with strategies for effective implementation of the interview rules. \nPART 3 – Fun in the Funnel – Exploring Focused Questions (November 29)\nDescription: The funnel is an analogy to understand the concept of beginning with broad questions and moving to more focused questions. The concept of broad to more focused questions is a best practice for gaining accurate information in the least leading manner. This webinar will explore how to gather information about events or topics. The fun in the funnel is learning how this concept can build structure in an investigative interview\, which is beneficial for the interviewee and the interviewer. Participants will learn how to apply the funnel concept and strategies for building structure in an interview. \nAbout Presenter\nAndy Stuart is the Training Division Manager with The Forensic Practice in British Columbia\, Canada. Andy became a StepWise instructor in 2008\, under the direct supervision of Dr. John Yuille and Dr. Hugues Hervé. Since then\, he has trained hundreds of front-line staff in StepWise interviewing. As the Training Division Manager\, he mentors new trainers\, consults with interviewers in the field\, and contributes to new workshop development. In 2001\, his policing career began\, and after completing twenty years of service\, Andy held the rank of Staff Sergeant at the Saanich Police Department\, Victoria\, BC. He is the recipient of multiple police commendations\, including the Meritorious Service Medal from the Provincial Lt. Governor. He has also held positions as a sessional instructor at Camosun College and an online instructor at the University of Manitoba. SUMMARY:NCAC SUpervision of Child Forensic Interviewers
DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nAs many child advocacy centers (CAC) employ child forensic interview specialists or choose to develop a small group of investigator interviewers\, there is a growing need for a set plan for building skills and increasing the competency and resilience of their forensic interviewers.  Supervision\, a long-standing tradition in medicine and mental health\, is an established relationship between a senior practitioner and a more junior partner to provide feedback\, guidance\, support\, and ongoing education toward developing a specialized skill. \nAn experienced forensic interviewer may have much to offer a newly developing forensic interviewer but may need more education or direction to increase their knowledge about supervision or develop skills and abilities to provide supervision in a structured and intentional way. \nPrinciples of supervision will be presented and discussed\, along with core values and practices around effective supervision. A model for assessing current forensic interviewers’ skill level and developmental needs will be introduced. In addition\, suggestions for continual growth and support to promote resiliency and longevity\, and excellence in interviewing will be discussed. \nWho should attend?\nThis training is appropriate for experienced forensic interviewers who want to develop or strengthen a supervision program for forensic interviewers within their CAC\, state\, or region. Completion of nationally-recognized forensic interviewing training is required. \nRegister through NCAC\nRegister by October 31\, 2023 \nA 25% discount is available for registrants from developing countries or from Tribal CACs. SUMMARY:Sensory Processing and Mental Health: A Trauma Informed Approach
DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nMinnesota Association for Children’s Mental Health (MACMH) presents a training opportunity with Jessica Villery\, OTS\, OTR/L\, Occupational Therapist at PrairieCare and Instructional Support Staff at University of Minnesota. This training is suited for juvenile/restorative justice professionals\, education professionals\, Health Care professionals\, and mental health professionals and will address working with children at six-years-old to adults. \nSensory Processing and Mental Health teaches participants the basics of sensory processing differences and how they impact daily functioning. These concepts will be related to various common mental health diagnoses\, life circumstances\, and impact on behavior. This presentation will promote an understanding of preventative strategies and optimize function for children with sensory processing differences and mental health challenges to create a positive and predictable environment. Participants increase their understanding of Winnie Dunn’s theory of sensory processing including eight sensory systems\, realistic interventions to promote improvement in daily functioning\, and the connection between sensory processing challenges and common mental health disorders. SUMMARY:NCAC More Than One Interview: When\, Why\, and How
DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nThe forensic interview (FI) of a child is an essential component of any investigation\, with an emphasis given to providing a timely initial response and the provision of information and support throughout the process. Attention has historically been paid to minimizing the number of times a child is questioned\, especially avoiding duplicative interviews. \nForensic interviewers\, as well as law enforcement and child protection investigators\, recognize the shortcomings of a “one and done” approach in interviewing a subset of children. Reasons might be child-specific (shyness in a new situation\, communication challenges\, fatigue\, reluctance to talk about difficult topics) or case-related (multiple episodes of abuse or multiple forms of victimization\, etc.). Research is informative regarding the cases most appropriate for more than one interview session and gives guidance on how to proceed. We will explore a decision-making process for selecting appropriate cases\, case planning\, and adaptations. \nThis training is most helpful for interviewers who have developed basic forensic interviewing skills and are comfortable conducting single-session forensic interviews of child witnesses. Completion of nationally recognized forensic interviewer training and experience conducting at least 50 forensic interviews is required. \nRegister through NCAC\nRegister by October 13\, 2023 \nCancellation Policy\nThe full registration fee is due by the fee deadline stated above in order to hold your spot. DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nMinnesota Association for Children’s Mental Health (MACMH) presents a training opportunity with Kendra Gludt\, MPH\, Director of National Programs at Proof Alliance\, and Marissa Lang\, a Senior Program Manager at Proof Alliance and a Proof Alliance Youth Panel member. This training is suited for every profession to join and will address working with early childhood to young adults. \nThis presentation will present information on fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD)\, address common misunderstandings\, and offer practical strategies. Learn how prenatal alcohol exposure impacts brain development and how to use this information to improve outcomes for individuals with FASD. Youth with FASD will also share their personal stories and advice based on their experiences. \nLearning Objectives\n\nUnderstand how prenatal alcohol exposure impacts brain development.\nAcquire strategies to help individuals with FASD.\nLearn approaches from FASD self-advocates with lived experience.\n\nAbout the Presenters\nKendra Gludt\, MPH\, is the Director of National Programs at Proof Alliance\, a nonprofit dedicated to preventing fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) and supporting all those impacted. In the 16 years that she has worked at Proof Alliance\, Kendra has worked with many partnering agencies including clinics\, treatment centers\, county systems\, and social service agencies\, helping them change their practices to recognize and respond to FASD. Kendra is currently on the faculty of the SAFEST Choice Learning Collaborative\, a HRSA-funded program that aims to reduce prenatal alcohol exposure and improve outcomes for children with FASD. \nMarissa Lang has over 20 years working in the field of FASD. She began her career screening adjudicated youth for FASD through a federal grant project at Hennepin County Juvenile Corrections in Minnesota\, followed by 18 years at Proof Alliance. In her role as Senior Program Manager at Proof Alliance\, she is responsible for the development and implementation of programming for individuals with an FASD\, and their families. She is also involved in the public policy work at Proof Alliance to help create long-term systemic change. DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nThe National Children’s Advocacy Center (NCAC) Forensic Interviewing of Children training is an internationally recognized\, research-informed and practice-informed intensive training. Participants will learn necessary skills to conduct a competent investigative interview of a child using the NCAC Child Forensic Interview (CFI) Structure. Participants will also be introduced to the evidence-based literature that supports the NCAC CFI Structure. \nThis interactive training is facilitated by practicing forensic interviewers who are well-versed in the current literature. The training includes lectures\, skill-building activities\, guided discussions\, reflections\, and an interview practicum in a supportive environment with assessment and feedback provided by experienced interviewers. A pre- and post-training knowledge check will be administered. \nTopics covered in this course include the following: \n\nNCAC Child Forensic Interview Structure\nDynamics of Abuse\nForensic Conversations\nChild Development\nMemory and Suggestibility\nPre-Interview Planning\nInclusive Forensic Interviewing\nInterview Practicum and Assessment\nTransition Strategies\nEffective Courtroom Testimony\n\nThis training is a four-day commitment. SUMMARY:APSAC's 2023 Practice Guidelines on Forensic Interviewing of Children
DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nThe forensic interview is a critical tool for gathering information in child maltreatment cases.  This specialized and evolving skill requires on-going training and peer review. Child forensic interviews can be used in cases where a child may have been abused\, exploited\, neglected\, psychologically maltreated\, or witnessed a crime. It is investigative in nature and used to gather potential evidence about what a child may have experienced or witnessed as part of a larger investigation. The workshop will review what’s new and different in the 2023 APSAC Practice Guidelines on Forensic Interviewing of Children. While many forensic interviews involve children who have previously disclosed\, the recommendations contained in this workshop can be utilized in exploratory (e.g. at-risk\, precautionary\, screening) situations where there has not been previous disclosure. The guidelines presented are transferable in other contexts such as interviewing vulnerable adults. These interviews are evidence\, and as such\, the interview can be utilized in criminal child abuse proceedings\, civil child protection proceedings\, domestic proceedings\, and criminal activity witnessed by children. Information from the interviews may help identify other victims\, assist professionals responsible for assessing risk and safety needs of children and families\, and facilitate case management decisions. \nThe recently updated 2012 APSAC Practice Guidelines on Forensic Interviewing (2023) will be discussed to help participants to differentiate between current evidenced-based interview components and past practices. Updates and changes in practice will be highlighted and explained. The APSAC guidelines are aspirational and intended to encourage the highest level of interview proficiency and to offer direction for training child forensic interviewers. Participants will be able to recognize the necessary attributes of an interviewer\, interview training\, context and components of a trauma-informed child forensic interview. The purpose of a forensic interview is to elicit as much reliable information as possible from the child to inform the investigation and case planning. This workshop will guide Interviewers in the attempt to collect facts in a neutral\, supportive\, and objective manner consistent with the best interests of the child. \nThe goal is to provide a trauma-informed opportunity for a child to talk about their experiences while minimizing negative impact. At the core\, forensic interviews are non-leading\, non-suggestive\, non-blaming and non-shaming. Beyond understanding the importance of conducting developmentally\, culturally sensitive interviews\, establishing rapport\, and learning idiosyncratic differences in children’s use of language\, participants will gain an understanding of the evolution of forensic interview practice. Participants will also learn how barriers created by cultural differences can interfere with the ability to gain important information and often lead to misunderstandings and misinformed decision-making.  This workshop is only a brief overview to the updated 2023 APSAC Practice Guidelines on Forensic Interviewing of Children. SUMMARY:NCAC Forensic Interviews of Preschool Child Witnesses
DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nA forensic interview of a preschool child brings unique challenges. Cognitive and linguistic abilities are newly emerging for children in this age group. While preschoolers may appear verbal and competent within their familiar everyday environment and conversations\, they have little to no experience providing personal autobiographical information to an unfamiliar adult in an unfamiliar setting. Separation from their caregiver can be unsettling for the very youngest children\, especially those with no prior daycare or preschool experience. \nGreater knowledge of developmental abilities and limitations\, as well as patience and willingness on the interviewer’s part to adapt language and limit expectations\, is required with this age group. Recommendations for adjusting language and questioning approaches and an adaptation of interview protocols will be provided. SUMMARY:NCA Perceptions & Practices of CACs and their Community Partners in Serving Children & Adolescents with PSB
DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nKate Theimer\, PhD\, Erin Taylor\, PhD\, and Jane Silovsky\, PhD\, will present the results of a national NCA survey of CACs regarding children and adolescents with problematic sexual behavior.  Please join us to learn more about this joint collaboration between NCA and the University of Oklahoma’s Health Sciences Center.  Originally done in 2019\, the survey and its subsequent updates have helped direct NCA’s approach to providing guidance and support to CACs addressing the needs of this underserved population.  Current policies\, barriers to policies and practices\, and recommendations regarding these will be addressed.  Current activities of the NCA Workgroup on Policies and Procedures will be shared. \nRegister through NCA\n

DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nOur comprehensive Clinic offers a unique opportunity to participate in an intensive training experience focused on the basic skills and knowledge necessary to conduct child forensic interviews. Participants will have a personal interaction with leading experts in the field of child forensic interviewing. Attendees must complete pre-clinic assignments and respond to communication from the Clinic Director prior to the event.  There will be homework and self-study assignments following each day of the clinic.  In order to receive a certificate of completion participants must complete mock child forensic interviews with actors and pass a test following the conclusion of the Clinic. \nThe APSAC Child Forensic Interview Clinic is intended as an initial training for professionals whose job responsibilities include conducting in-depth forensic investigative interviews of children who may have experienced or witnessed maltreatment\, exploitation\, neglect\, or other crimes. These interviews are conducted as part of a multidisciplinary team investigative process in affiliation with a Child Advocacy Center (CAC)\, police agency\, or government-sponsored child protection agency. \nTo meet the criteria for attendance you must be one of the following: \n\nEndorsed by a CAC\nEndorsed by a police agency\nEndorsed by a government-sponsored child protection agency as someone who is or will be responsible for conducting in-depth forensic interviews of children on a regular basis\nA child abuse pediatric fellow\n\nUpon completion of the clinic\, you will need to be able to implement the training as a member of (or endorsed by) an existing CAC and/or multidisciplinary child abuse investigation team. SUMMARY:Zero Abuse Project ChildFirst® EX: Expanded Forensic Interview Process
DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nBased on the nationally-recognized ChildFirst® Forensic Interview Protocol\, this 2.5-day training provides a purposeful and legally defensible process for conducting expanded forensic interviews with children who may not succeed in a standard\, single interview due to trauma\, developmental\, special needs or other complicating issues\, including poly-victimization. This 2.5-day course will teach the expanded interview process as well as research supporting multiple\, non-duplicative interviews with child victims and witnesses.\nThis training will discuss the expanded interview process as well as research supporting multiple\, non-duplicative interviews with child victims and witnesses. DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nZero Abuse Project is presenting a training opportunity where participants will get to learn the tools and gain practical skills to better communicate with a child during the initial outcry of maltreatment. \nProtecting children from child abuse and maltreatment requires that everyone understand how to recognize\, respond and report any form of maltreatment a child may experience. FIRST response is often the single most important step in effectively responding and reporting maltreatment. \nFIRST will give you and your community the tools necessary to better protect kids. This half-day training goes beyond recognizing types of maltreatment. The training combines both lecture and practicum giving participants the tools and practical skills to better communicate with a child during the initial outcry of maltreatment. \nThe FIRST process teaches three critical components\n\nHow to recognize signs and symptoms of abuse and maltreatment\nHow to listen and respond to a child’s needs\nHow to effectively and accurately report any form of maltreatment to authorities\nYour FIRST Response to an Allegation of Child Maltreatment training teaches participants how to listen to children who have experienced maltreatment and gather the correct information needed in a way that puts the child’s needs FIRST.\n\nLearning Objectives\n\nUnderstand reality of child abuse\nUnderstand how to gather information utilizing the FIRST process\nUnderstand responsibility of mandated reporting and information needed for report\n\nYour FIRST Response to Alleged Child Maltreatment is a train-the-trainer model. SUMMARY:NCAC Introduction to Supervision for Child Forensic Interviewers
DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nThis course is an introduction to a supervision model for child forensic interviewers. In addition to the basic principles and goals of supervision\, it will offer strategies for developing an effective supervision process tailored to the resources of the individual children’s advocacy center (CAC) and community. \nWho Should Attend?  \nThis training is appropriate for experienced child forensic interviewers wanting to develop a supervision process in their CAC and executive directors or state chapter representatives interested in establishing a regional or statewide supervision program. Completion of nationally-recognized forensic interviewing training is required. \nTrainer: Linda Cordisco Steele\, MEd LPC \nRegister through NCAC\nRegister by July 9\, 2023 \nThis training is only offered virutally. \nA 25% discount is available for registrants from developing countries or from Tribal CACs. Please contact the training coordinator for additional information. Please note: To pay via international wire transfer\, payment must be made in U.S. dollars at your expense. Banking and account information is provided on request. \nCancellation Policy\nThe full registration fee is due by the fee deadline stated above in order to hold your spot. DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nBased on the nationally-recognized ChildFirst® Forensic Interview Protocol\, this 2.5-day training provides a purposeful and legally defensible process for conducting expanded forensic interviews with children who may not succeed in a standard\, single interview due to trauma\, developmental\, special needs or other complicating issues\, including polyvictimization. This training is designed for investigative teams of law enforcement officers\, social workers\, prosecutors\, child protection attorney\, and forensic interviewers who have completed a nationally recognized basic child forensic interview training. \nThis training will teach the expanded interview process as well as research supporting multiple\, non-duplicative interviews with child victims and witnesses. \nRegister via First Witness
