AVP is a broad-based effort to end violence and harassment against and within LGBTQ+ communities in Minnesota. SUMMARY:APSAC Forensic Interviewing Children with Disabilities
DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nForensic Interviewing Children with Disabilities is an eight-part webinar series designed to assist interviewers in advancing their skills of interviewing children with disabilities in the most developmentally appropriate\, non-leading\, non-suggestive\, legally defensible way possible. Participants who complete each of the eight modules in the series will receive a certificate indicating participation and completion of the program.  It is required to complete all eight modules to receive this certificate. Certificates will not be issued for individual modules. \nAll sessions (February 1\, 15; March 1\, 15\, 29; April 12\, 26; May 10) will take place from 10:00 am to 11:30 pm ET on Tuesdays. The program will take place remotely through the use of live interactive webinars over Zoom. \nView details for each session and register online through APSAC. \nContinuing Education\nAPSAC is recognized as a provider of psychology and social work continuing education credits. Participating psychologists and social workers will receive 12 contact hours in the course and a certificate of completion will clearly note the number of credits awarded. Participants applying for CE credits must participate in all 8 sessions.  The cost of continuing education credits is $40 for the entire course. Providing language facilitation and interpretation services are vital to accessibility in the forensic interview process. \nLearning Objectives\n\nIncrease the understanding of assessing the needs of children and non-offending caregivers requiring language interpretation.\nAn overview of considerations prior to\, during\, and after the forensic interview process.\nLearn tools and strategies for utilizing interpreters in the forensic interview.\n\nPresenter Bio\nRachel Johnson has over a decade of experience in work related to child abuse\, forensic interviewing\, multidisciplinary teams\, victimization\, advocacy\, prevention education\, and family violence\, both domestically and abroad. She currently works as a forensic interview specialist with Zero Abuse Project where she provides training and technical assistance to child abuse professionals\, designs and develops curricula\, and conducts forensic interviews at community-based centers. DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nThis module will address the fundamental and most critical component of investigations involving child/adolescent victims of commercial sexual exploitation – the interview of the victim. Participants will learn about the FBI’s forensic interviewing protocol and how it is utilized when interviewing these victims. Victim dynamics and barriers that impact the victims’ reluctance to disclose will be addressed. DESCRIPTION:Due to the strong response to this training\, we’ve partnered to hold a second session for those who’re unable to register for the first session held in July 2021. \nTraining Overview\nMinnesota Children’s Alliance (the Alliance) is excited to host Extended Forensic Interviews: Practical skills for multiple session care\, with Rita Farrell\, Forensic Interview and Director of ChildFirst® for Zero Abuse Project\, and Julie Stauffer\, LICSW\, Forensic Interviewing Manager with CornerHouse\, Wednesday\, July 14\, 2021\, 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.\, via Zoom HealthCare. \nBased on the nationally recognized ChildFirst® Forensic Interview and CornerHouse Forensic Interview Protocol™ models\, this one-day training will give an overview of conducting multiple-session forensic interviews when a child may not succeed in a standard\, single-session interview due to trauma\, development\, special needs\, or other complicating factors\, including poly-victimization. This advanced training will discuss the multi-session and expanded interview processes; provide practical information for conducting follow-up interviews; and offer real-world examples as well as research supporting multiple-session\, non-duplicative interviews with child victims and witnesses. Register for the August 12 training. \nMinnesota Children’s Alliance (the Alliance) is excited to host Extended Forensic Interviews: Practical skills for multiple session care\, with Rita Farrell\, Forensic Interview and Director of ChildFirst® for Zero Abuse Project\, and Julie Stauffer\, LICSW\, Forensic Interviewing Manager with CornerHouse\, Wednesday\, July 14\, 2021\, 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.\, via Zoom HealthCare. \nTraining Overview\nBased on the nationally recognized ChildFirst® Forensic Interview and CornerHouse Forensic Interview Protocol™ models\, this one-day training will give an overview of conducting multiple-session forensic interviews when a child may not succeed in a standard\, single-session interview due to trauma\, development\, special needs\, or other complicating factors\, including poly-victimization. This advanced training will discuss the multi-session and expanded interview processes; provide practical information for conducting follow-up interviews; and offer real-world examples as well as research supporting multiple-session\, non-duplicative interviews with child victims and witnesses. DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nThe use of technology has impacted how children/adolescents are victimized. Research supports that the use of technology during victimization can increase the likelihood that a victim will not disclose. Most interview models are designed for children who have previously disclosed and who transition easily from the beginning of the interview to a substantive interview. Reluctant children may need more cues which may mean utilizing evidence in the forensic interview. This module will discuss the use of evidence\, with emphasis on abusive images\, in the interview. \nLearning Objectives\n\nParticipants will understand how evidence may be used in a forensic interview.\nParticipants will learn how to present evidence in the forensic interview.\nParticipants will be able to understand the dynamics of victims of abusive images.\n\nTrainer\nPresenter Bonnie I. Fries\, MSW\, LCSW\, Child & Adolescent Forensic Interviewer with the Federal Bureau of Investigations\, is a licensed clinical social worker in the state of Illinois with specialized training in child and adolescent welfare and abuse-related trauma. She received her Bachelor of Social Work degree in 1998 from Illinois State University’s Jane Addams College of Social Work and Master of Social Work degree in 2001 from the University of Illinois at Chicago. DESCRIPTION:General Information\nThe ChildFirst® Forensic Interview Protocol training brings the field into the classroom\, enhancing the proficiency of front-line child abuse professionals. This course is designed for investigative teams of law enforcement officers\, social workers\, prosecutors\, child protection attorneys\, and forensic interviewers. Students receive training on the ChildFirst® Forensic Interview Protocol\, child development\, memory and suggestibility\, testifying in court\, legal issues\, and preparing children for court. This training incorporates lecture and discussion\, review of electronically recorded interviews\, skill-building exercises\, and an interview practicum with professional actors. \nChildFirst® is a unique approach to forensic interviewing for several reasons:\n\nChildFirst® was designed by and for the front-line child abuse professional.\nCourses teach students to apply the latest research to real-world situations.\nStudents watch numerous videotaped child sexual abuse interviews as a means of bringing the course material to life.\nThe program requires students to demonstrate their interviewing skills.\nChildFirst® models the multidisciplinary approach.\nThe education incorporates a practicum forensic interview with a trained actor portraying a child abuse victim.\nThe program encourages ongoing critiques of students’ interviewing skills to improve their technique.\nThe ChildFirst® forensic interview course has been approved by the National Children’s Alliance to meet accreditation standards.\n\nWhat’s new?\nWe know that narrative practice and invitations are the best way to reduce suggestibility and create a child-centered interview. The narrative invitation is utilized throughout the interview process and taught in the forensic interview training. We have made subtle yet essential changes in how interview instructions are incorporated in the interview. \nFirst Witness’s updated protocol and training information will prepare each attendee to conduct a purposeful and legally defensible interview. This training is designed for child protection workers\, tribal social service workers\, law enforcement officers\, and county attorneys whose primary responsibility is investigating and prosecuting child sexual abuse cases. \nContinuing Education Credits\nP.O.S.T. and C.L.E. credits available for Minnesota participants. DESCRIPTION:Overview\nThe National Children’s Advocacy Center (NCAC) has collaborated with renowned researchers Sonja Brubacher and Martine Powell with Griffith University in Australia to offer Building Forensic Interviewing Skills Online Training. The purpose of NCAC’s Building Forensic Interviewing Skills Online Training is to provide professionals\, who have completed a nationally or state-recognized forensic interview training\, the opportunity to strengthen and expand their practical skills. \nResearch proves that forensic interviewers do not use as many open-ended questions as they believe they do\, and many interviewers find it challenging to follow best practices.  This training will provide opportunities to review and practice key elements of forensic interviewing\, to improve practice and enhance interviewing skills.  In addition\, interviewers will receive preparation and practice tools to use to evaluate their own interviews and to participate in effective peer review with other interviewers. \nQualifications\nTo participate in this course\, participants need to meet the following criteria. \n\nHas completed a nationally- or state-recognized forensic interview training.\nConducts forensic interviews of children on a regular basis as a primary job duty.\nCan complete the necessary coursework in the given time frames.\nHas access to a computer with a webcam\, microphone\, and access to the internet (for mock interviews and consultations).\nCan obtain written permission from a supervisor to participate in this training.\n\nCohort Schedule\n\nCourse begins: June 1\, 2021\nCourse closes: August 27\, 2021\n\n*Participants must complete the course including evaluation\, post mock interview and post test before the closing date.
