Prior to her work at the Alliance\, Rachel served as a forensic interviewer and the Forensic Program Coordinator at First Witness Child Advocacy Center in Duluth\, Minn. She is trained in multiple forensic interview protocols and received Bachelor of Science degrees in Public Service\, Sociology and Spanish at Hamline University in St. Paul\, Minn. Rachel is passionate about working directly with children and families\, supporting frontline professionals and improving the institutional response to victimization by centering the experiences of victims at all levels of consideration and decision-making. \nCaitie Dahl is a Forensic Interview Specialist and Trainer with Zero Abuse Project. Prior to joining Zero Abuse\, Caitie served as a Forensic Interviewer\, Forensic Program Coordinator\, Trainer\, and Multidisciplinary Team Facilitator with First Witness Child Advocacy Center in Duluth\, Minnesota. Caitie enjoys working with children and providing a trauma-friendly and legally defensible opportunity for victims of abuse to share their experiences. Additionally\, she enjoys training professionals in the field to strengthen their responses to reports of child maltreatment and collaborate with other multidisciplinary professionals when working with children and families throughout the investigative process. Caitie received a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology from the University of Wisconsin-Superior\, where she also studied and conducted research on topics such as coercive interviewing\, false confessions\, wrongful convictions\, and suggestibility and memory errors. SUMMARY:NCAC Components for Enhancing Career Experience and Reducing Trauma
DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nCompassion Fatigue. Burnout. Vicarious Trauma. Secondary Trauma. Terms that overlap and yet are somewhat different. However\, all these concepts have one thing in common – they describe the emotional toll exacted upon workers in the human services who deal intensively and empathically with children and adults who are in engaged in an emotional personal struggle. It is a privilege to work in a profession in which caring about those who suffer is the main tool of our work. But caring also takes a toll. Being close to ground zero when people struggle affects the emotional life of those of us who care. \nComponents for Enhancing Career Experience and Reducing Trauma\, or CE-CERT\, is a suite of skills designed to support well-being in professionals who are exposed to secondary trauma. The goal of CE-CERT is not merely to help professionals survive this work. Rather\, the goal is to support professionals to have a vocation that is uniquely and deeply satisfying. CE-CERT goes beyond the usual discussion of secondary traumatic stress and burnout to provide specific\, practical skills that can be applied to the very real stress that is produced by this work. \nCE-CERT training is designed for professionals and supervisors who work in child abuse and neglect\, such as those at Children’s Advocacy Centers\, members of multidisciplinary teams\, and their partners. CE-CERT training is provided in two parts: \n\nPart 1 – Foundations in CE-CERT is a two-day foundational training in the principles and skills of CE-CERT and is intended for all professionals working in child abuse and neglect. This will be held on May 16-17.\nPart 2 – CE-CERT for Supervisors is a one-day training specifically for supervisors of child maltreatment professionals. Supervisors will learn how to incorporate CE-CERT into their supervision model with staff. In addition to the one-day training\, supervisors are invited and strongly encouraged to participate in 10 one-hour consultation calls scheduled once or twice a month with the CE-CERT trainer. Supervisors who want to participate in Part 2 must have attended the Part 1 training. This will be held on May 18.\nLocation: Westminster\, CO.\n\nCE-CERT training is funded by a federal grant awarded to the NCAC. The training is offered at no cost to participants in the United States\, U.S. territories\, and local Tribal Nations. \nRegister via NCAC\nApplications are open until May 1\, 2023. \nThere is no cost to attend this training. These trainings are being offered nationally and in-person.

SUMMARY:Zero Abuse Project Serving LGBTQIA+ Children and Families in the Child Abuse MDT Process
DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nThis course will provide an overview of affirmative practices for all multidisciplinary team (MDT) professionals supporting and serving LGBTQIA+ children\, youth and families when responding to child abuse and maltreatment. In addition to providing an overview of gender and sexuality terminology\, some of the topics covered will include cultural considerations when working with LGBQTIA+ children\, youth and families\, working with caregivers that are not supportive of LGBTQIA+ youth\, preparing the team\, family and child for the process\, allyship\, pronouns\, engaging community partners\, vetting resources for LGBQTIA+ families\, considerations for the forensic protocol and the use of interview aids. While considerations for the forensic interview will be discussed in this course\, the primary focus of this training is on the MDT\, as a whole. \nThis training is appropriate for law enforcement\, prosecuting attorneys\, child protection workers\, forensic interviewers\, mental health professionals\, medical providers\, advocates\, community liaisons\, and youth serving professionals that may interact with LGBTQIA+ children and youth. \nThis event will be held virtually via Zoom. SUMMARY:CornerHouse: Basic Forensic Interview Training
DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nThis training teaches the CornerHouse Forensic Interview Protocol™\, a credible\, reliable\, developmentally flexible\, and non-traumatic forensic interview protocol appropriate for children\, adolescents\, and vulnerable adults involved in a sexual abuse investigation. Training methods include lecture and discussion\, review of CornerHouse video-recorded interviews\, skill-building exercises\, and an interview practicum. These courses are designed for teams of forensic interviewers\, child protection workers\, tribal social service investigators\, law enforcement officers\, and prosecuting attorneys. DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\n\n\nDr. Mark Hudson raises awareness of medical evaluations and findings associated with child maltreatment\, primarily physical abuse. Dr. Hudson will provide an overview of skin\, bone\, and head injuries that are most concerning for physical abuse\, including basic anatomy and psychiatry. Additionally\, he will discuss the importance of considering a child’s developmental abilities and review literature related to shortfalls in children. The target audiences for this training include non-medical professionals who have frequent contact with children or participate in child abuse investigations\, evaluations\, or legal proceedings related to maltreatment concerns. \n\nAbout the Presenter\n\n\nMark Hudson\, MD\, received his Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Minnesota and completed a Pediatrics residency at the University of Minnesota. Following residency\, he completed a Child Abuse Fellowship and is Board Certified in Child Abuse Pediatrics. Dr. Hudson is a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics and a member of the Ray Helfer Society. He is the Medical Director of Midwest Children’s Resource Center\, a medically based Child Advocacy Center at Children’s Minnesota. He is the Executive Director of the Midwest Regional Child Advocacy Center. \n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Midwest Children’s Resource Center and Midwest Regional Children’s Advocacy Center\nThe Midwest Children’s Resource Center (MCRC) is an accredited child advocacy center by the National Children’s Alliance and a clinic with Children’s Minnesota that offers medical evaluation and case management in alleged child abuse cases\, serious neglect\, and witness to violence. \nRegistration – $10\nWe are excited to host this training for this month. These courses are designed for teams of forensic interviewers\, child protection workers\, tribal social service investigators\, law enforcement officers and prosecuting attorneys. Participants are encouraged to attend as a multidisciplinary team. DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nGrooming behaviors are estimated to be present in nearly half of all child sexual abuse cases. It is important for child abuse professionals to recognize manipulative patterns and behaviors that offenders employ to groom their victims for compliance with abuse and non-disclosure\, so interventions can be made as early as possible. DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nThe right to give a victim impact statement is one of Minnesota’s most important statutory crime victim rights. It represents one of the few times that victims have a voice in the criminal prosecution process and can speak to the impact of the crime. The process for submitting a victim impact statement prior to sentencing varies across the state\, and the path that the victim impact statement takes once submitted has implications for the victim. \nThis presentation will provide an overview of victim impact statements and how they get processed and presented\, with an emphasis on the important role of community-based and government-based advocates in educating victims and assisting them with preparing their statements.
