AVP is a broad-based effort to end violence and harassment against and within LGBTQ+ communities in Minnesota. Providing language facilitation and interpretation services are vital to accessibility in the forensic interview process. \nLearning Objectives\n\nIncrease the understanding of assessing the needs of children and non-offending caregivers requiring language interpretation.\nAn overview of considerations prior to\, during\, and after the forensic interview process.\nLearn tools and strategies for utilizing interpreters in the forensic interview.\n\nPresenter Bio\nRachel Johnson has over a decade of experience in work related to child abuse\, forensic interviewing\, multidisciplinary teams\, victimization\, advocacy\, prevention education\, and family violence\, both domestically and abroad. She currently works as a forensic interview specialist with Zero Abuse Project where she provides training and technical assistance to child abuse professionals\, designs and develops curricula\, and conducts forensic interviews at community-based centers. Rachel most recently served as the program director for the Minnesota Children’s Alliance. \nPrior to her work at the Alliance\, Rachel served as a forensic interviewer and the forensic program coordinator at First Witness Child Advocacy Center. She is trained in multiple forensic interview protocols. Rachel received Bachelor of Science degrees in Public Service\, Sociology\, and Spanish at Hamline University in St. Paul\, Minnesota. DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nChild abuse disclosures and information provided by the child during the forensic interview are where the investigation truly begins. Identifying corroborating details from the interview is imperative to the child abuse investigation. Engaging the multidisciplinary team to understand their roles and goals during and after the interview will enhance and strengthen the investigation. Attending this training as an MDT may be very helpful but is not mandatory. This training will take place online via video conferencing. \nTopics covered in this session will include\n\nRecognize information and details that can and need to be corroborated.\nShare examples from child statements/interviews that lead to additional evidence.\nExplore the roles of each member of the MDT and how the investigation continues after the forensic interview.\nProvide an opportunity to network and share best practices.\n\nIf you are located in Minnesota and you are a first responder or Multi-Disciplinary Team member\, you may qualify for scholarship funds for this session. DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nThis module will address the fundamental and most critical component of investigations involving child/adolescent victims of commercial sexual exploitation – the interview of the victim. Participants will learn about the FBI’s forensic interviewing protocol and how it is utilized when interviewing these victims. Victim dynamics and barriers that impact the victims’ reluctance to disclose will be addressed. Research supports that the use of technology during victimization can increase the likelihood that a victim will not disclose. Most interview models are designed for children who have previously disclosed and who transition easily from the beginning of the interview to a substantive interview. Reluctant children may need more cues which may mean utilizing evidence in the forensic interview. SUMMARY:Suggestibility and Memory: Considerations for the Criminal Investigation
DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nThis module will provide criminal investigators with the principles of suggestibility to inform their understanding when interacting with victims and witnesses of crime. A brief history of forensic interviewing and current research on memory will allow participants to see how victim/witness statements have been viewed and evaluated in the past and today. Participants will learn to better evaluate statements throughout the course of a criminal investigation from outcry\, to forensic interview\, to trial. \nLearning Objectives\n\nProvide criminal investigators with the principles of suggestibility to inform their understanding of and interactions with victims and witnesses.\nDevelop skills necessary to evaluate statements made throughout the course of a criminal investigation from outcry to forensic interview to trial testimony.\nAssist investigators to become good consumers of the forensic interview process\n\nTrainer\nPresenter Bonnie I. Fries\, MSW\, LCSW\, Child & Adolescent Forensic Interviewer with the Federal Bureau of Investigations\, is a licensed clinical social worker in the state of Illinois with specialized training in child and adolescent welfare and abuse-related trauma. She received her Bachelor of Social Work degree in 1998 from Illinois State University’s Jane Addams College of Social Work and Master of Social Work degree in 2001 from the University of Illinois at Chicago. Prior to joining the FBI Bonnie worked as an Assistant Director and Director within Children’s Advocacy Centers\, and has conducted more than 2\,000 forensic interviews. \nContinuing Education Credits\nPOST and Social Work credits will be available. \nWe are excited to bring this training to you at a minimal fee. SUMMARY:Interviewing the Child who is Recanting Sexual Abuse with Dr. Thomas Lyon\, J.D.\, Ph.D.
DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nThis webinar will discuss best practices for interviewing children who recant their previous disclosure of sexual abuse. The webinar will review the research on what factors influence children to recant and listen to clips of interviews in which children recant. Focus will not be on the child’s previous disclosures\, what others have said to the child about their allegations and how the child feels about the changes in their life since the original disclosure. \nTrainer\nDr. Thomas Lyon is the Judge Edward J. and Ruey L. Guirado Chair of Law and Psychology at the University of Southern Gould School of Law. His research examines the best means by which child witnesses can be questioned in order to maximize their productivity and minimize error. His work has been supported by the National Institutes of Health\, the National Science Foundation\, and the U.S. Department of Justice.
