SUMMARY:First Witness The Power of Positive Childhood Experiences
DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nAs Health and Human Service Professionals\, we are aware of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and the lasting effects that they can have on a developing child. However\, what is not discussed as much is the power of Positive Childhood Experiences (PCEs) and the resilience that can emerge through traumatic events experienced. This presentation explains the Child Advocacy Center approach and how we can promote PCEs through connection\, acknowledgment\, and support. By encouraging PCEs we can create a more connected community\, and strengthen our response to child abuse and neglect. \nRegister through First Witness

SUMMARY:Justice Clearinghouse | Broadening Human Trafficking Investigations to Decrease Reliance on Victim Testimony
DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nHuman trafficking is a global crisis\, with an estimated 50 million victims worldwide. In the United States alone\, approximately 400\,000 individuals are exploited through sex trafficking\, labor trafficking\, or domestic servitude. This illicit trade generates an estimated $240 billion annually—more than the profits of major Fortune 500 companies\, including Apple\, Amazon\, and Disney. \nLike victims of sexual assault and child exploitation\, human trafficking survivors are often a critical source of evidence for law enforcement seeking convictions. Yet\, many of these individuals are unable—or unwilling—to testify. For some\, the trauma is too painful to recount; for others\, the fear of facing their traffickers in court is overwhelming. Even those who do testify may face harsh cross-examinations that retraumatize them or diminish their credibility. Prosecutors often consider trafficking victims to be unreliable witnesses due to issues such as prior arrests or substance abuse\, which are frequently tied to their exploitation. \nAs investigators\, it’s crucial to reduce reliance on victim testimony and explore alternative methods of proving criminal activity. This includes leveraging statutes such as money laundering or RICO\, utilizing electronic evidence from mobile devices and data collectors\, and applying emerging technologies. \nThis webinar will explore the challenges of handling human trafficking cases and offer practical strategies to build strong cases while minimizing the burden on victims. \nRegister Through Justice Clearinghouse\n

SUMMARY:CornerHouse | Disclosure and Recantation: A Journey to Be Understood
DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nChildren who experience abuse or neglect may describe what happened to them in many ways. When a child talks about abuse\, it is called disclosure. Disclosures can be purposeful or accidental. \nDisclosing abuse or neglect is a process or a journey not a destination. Part of the journey often includes recantation or taking back the disclosure. Understanding the dynamics of the process a child may go through when disclosing\, including recantation\, can help us understand how to better conduct our investigations\, forensic interviews and therefore help in the healing journey. Additionally\, we need to understand this process\, including what the research tells us is “normal” to speak effectively on the subject in the courtroom. \nThis training will help learners better understand the disclosure process\, including recantation. Learners will gain knowledge and resources- including the most updated research- along with practical solutions on incorporating the information into practice. \nThis important training is being offered FREE to MDT members within the state of Minnesota. MDT members include any Child Advocacy Center (CAC) staff\, law enforcement/peace officers\, Department of Children and Families\, attorneys and advocates within a county attorney’ office\, medical providers and educators who serve/work with their local Child Advocacy Center. Please ConerHouse if you have questions regarding the MDT requirement. \nObjectives\n\nIdentify the disclosure process based on recent research\nRecognize the specific types of disclosures and how common each is\nUnderstand various factors which may impact a child in recantation\nLearn how to support a child through the disclosure process\n\nRegister Through CornerHouse

SUMMARY:CornerHouse | Empowering Survivors to Understand the Impact of Childhood Trauma
DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nExperiences in childhood matter. Numerous research studies have shown how childhood stress and trauma can impact adult health. The Ace Study is the largest study investigating the health and social effects of negative childhood experiences. Now that we have the research\, what can we do about it? The cycle of violence\, generational poverty and abuse\, homelessness\, substance abuse\, incarceration\, perpetration and victimization of violence are all related to ACE’s. But what if this is my story? \nMany adult survivors of child abuse have not or could not receive a collaborative response to their maltreatment for many reasons. One\, statute of limitations. Two\, prior to Child Advocacy Centers being established at the time of the maltreatment. Three\, the lack of understanding and responding to potential child maltreatment at the time. Helping survivors of childhood trauma understand the impact that ACE’s may have on their health and well-being is step one. Acknowledging the barriers and times when a survivor feels stuck is step two. Creating tools and self-care strategies is the lifetime journey to hope\, health and happiness. You are NOT your ACE score. It is NOT a diagnosis. This training will not only help you to support current survivors but survivors who never received support to process their victimization. \nObjectives\n\nSupporting survivors to change their inner dialogue from “what is wrong with me?” to “What happened to me”.\nRecognize types of child maltreatment and adversity and how it may impact adulthood.\nIdentify risk and protective factors to understand what may be triggering and what is considered self-care and healing.\n\nRegister Through CornerHouse

SUMMARY:MACMH | Fatphobia: The Socially Acceptable Bias
DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nFatphobia\, or weight-based discrimination\, is a pervasive issue that affects many aspects of life\, from healthcare and media representation to relationships and finances. This presentation aims to explore the complexities of fatphobia\, its origins\, and the profound effects it has on individuals from youth into adulthood and society as a whole. \nWe will begin by defining fatphobia and distinguishing it from related concepts like body positivity and other biases. These can range from overt acts like derogatory comments to subtler forms\, such as biased medical treatment or harmful media portrayals. \nThe presentation will explore how fatphobia has become normalized and perpetuated in society through factors like capitalism\, media influence\, and historical contexts. We’ll also discuss its impacts on mental and physical health\, including higher rates of anxiety\, depression\, and poor healthcare outcomes. Finally\, we will share actionable steps to challenge biases and promote inclusivity\, with tools like the Health at Every Size framework to help foster empathy and support equity in our communities. \nLearning Objectives\n\nRaise awareness of the pervasiveness and normalization of fatphobia.\nExplore how stigma and bias perpetuate fatphobia and related disorders.\nUnderstand the link between fatphobia and mental health.\nProvide strategies to challenge fatphobia in personal and professional settings.\nIntroduce Health at Every Size as a framework for supporting all body types.\n\nAbout the Presenter\nNathalie\, a dedicated psychotherapist with M Health Fairview and LynLake Centers for Wellbeing\, brings compassion and expertise to her practice. With a background in trauma work\, crisis intervention\, EMDR\, and therapy\, she finds purpose in helping others heal and find peace. As a passionate public speaker\, she advocates against fatphobia\, weight bias and leverages her platform to promote inclusivity\, acceptance\, and mental well-being. SUMMARY:Justice Clearinghouse | Not All Therapies Are Created Equal: What Courts Need to Know When Ordering "Therapy" for Families
DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nCourts regularly order therapy for multiple reasons.  The courts are\, unfortunately\, at the mercy of what is available in their area.  This webinar is designed to go “behind the curtain” to show court officials what really happens in therapy. \nDid you know that up to 80% of what happens in therapy is not based on science\, despite the science has existed for decades?  Did you also know that a therapist whose sole training in graduate school was with adults with drug problems can (and in many sites does) work with a 5-year-old with Autism despite having no training in that area (and still gets paid for that therapy)?  Do you want to know the one question to ask a child therapist to make sure they are using evidence-based\, effective therapy for that child? \nThese “in the pocket” tips will be the focus of this webinar. \nRegister Through Justice Clearinghouse\n

SUMMARY:IHS | Supporting LGBTQ+ Youth: Challenges\, Resources\, and Professional Resilience
DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nLGBTQ+ youth\, like all young people\, require environments that nurture their physical\, emotional\, and psychological well-being. They face unique challenges due to stigma\, discrimination\, and lack of understanding\, which can impact their developmental outcomes. LGBTQ+ youth can be at higher risk for suicidal ideation\, self-harm\, running away\, homelessness\, abuse\, and commercial sexual exploitation . These youth along with their families\, benefit from the support of compassionate\, informed professionals to provide services\, information\, and advocacy. \nThe LGBTQ+ community intersects with many other identities and communities. It is imperative that professionals maintain awareness of the intersectional needs of youth. In addition\, professionals supporting the needs of LGBTQ+ youth are having to factor in the rise of political initiatives to reduce or ban support of this population. This leads to ethical dilemmas and the risk of moral injury to the professional. Youth need consistent caring support from adults who are knowledgeable\, well-resourced\, and resilient. Professional self-care is critical so that adults can continue to provide ethical\, responsive care to the diversity of youth in the LGBTQ+ community. \nThis intermediate-level course is appropriate for social workers\, counselors\, psychologists\, and other human services professionals serving LGBTQ+ youth. \nLearning Objectives \n\nDescribe the unique challenges faced by LGBTQ+ youth due to stigma\, discrimination\, and lack of understanding including intersectional identities.\nIdentify a variety of approaches and interventions that support the developmental needs of LGBTQ+ youth.\nCreate a list of resources for support\, advocacy\, and information to benefit LGBTQ+ youth\, their families\, and their communities.\nDiscuss the awareness and implementation of professional self-care so that providers can maintain the resilience needed to provide ethical\, responsive care to LGBTQ+ youth.\n\nRegister Through IHS\nThis training course if free but $10 to receive continuing education credits.
