Dana holds a master’s degree in criminal justice\, and she has worked extensively in education and harm prevention surrounding technology in the state of Wisconsin. Dana is a former Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force Commander; in her tenure with the Wisconsin Department of Justice\, Dana managed the program operations for the ICAC Task Force\, including managing Wisconsin CyberTips from the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children and collaborating with Wisconsin law enforcement regarding investigations\, outreach\, and training events. Throughout her career\, Dana has provided online safety outreach to over 30\,000 people. She was appointed to that role in 2015 after joining the office in 2013. The Children’s Justice Division handled the charging and prosecution of all child victim cases in the county including physical abuse\, sexual assault and child deaths. Her role as Chief of the Division also involved mentoring and training the attorneys she supervised. SUMMARY:Understanding Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders: Facts\, Strategies\, and Personal Insights from Youth with Lived Experience
DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nMinnesota Association for Children’s Mental Health (MACMH) presents a training opportunity with Kendra Gludt\, MPH\, Director of National Programs at Proof Alliance\, and Marissa Lang\, a Senior Program Manager at Proof Alliance and a Proof Alliance Youth Panel member. This training is suited for every profession to join and will address working with early childhood to young adults. \nThis presentation will present information on fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD)\, address common misunderstandings\, and offer practical strategies. Learn how prenatal alcohol exposure impacts brain development and how to use this information to improve outcomes for individuals with FASD. Youth with FASD will also share their personal stories and advice based on their experiences. \nLearning Objectives\n\nUnderstand how prenatal alcohol exposure impacts brain development.\nAcquire strategies to help individuals with FASD.\nLearn approaches from FASD self-advocates with lived experience.\n\nAbout the Presenters\nKendra Gludt\, MPH\, is the Director of National Programs at Proof Alliance\, a nonprofit dedicated to preventing fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) and supporting all those impacted. In the 16 years that she has worked at Proof Alliance\, Kendra has worked with many partnering agencies including clinics\, treatment centers\, county systems\, and social service agencies\, helping them change their practices to recognize and respond to FASD. Kendra is currently on the faculty of the SAFEST Choice Learning Collaborative\, a HRSA-funded program that aims to reduce prenatal alcohol exposure and improve outcomes for children with FASD. \nMarissa Lang has over 20 years working in the field of FASD. She began her career screening adjudicated youth for FASD through a federal grant project at Hennepin County Juvenile Corrections in Minnesota\, followed by 18 years at Proof Alliance. In her role as Senior Program Manager at Proof Alliance\, she is responsible for the development and implementation of programming for individuals with an FASD\, and their families. She is also involved in the public policy work at Proof Alliance to help create long-term systemic change. Marissa is passionate about empowering youth using a strength-based approach and providing families critical skills to support loved ones with an FASD. \nRegister through MACMH\nThere are two CEHs available for this training.

DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nNew in 2023  – First Witness is pleased to offer Safe and Strong Child© Train the Presenter to CACs and other organizations interested in implementing a child abuse prevention education program in their communities. \nThis training will prepare presenters to share Safe and Strong Child© sessions with students\, caregivers\, and teachers and bring the curriculum to their local community; each person planning on presenting the information needs to take this Train the Presenter course. This course is not a train the trainer course\, and does not prepare you to train other presenters at your organization. \nSafe and Strong Child© (SSC©) body safety curriculum is aligned with evidence-informed best practices for child sexual abuse prevention. SSC© consists of developmentally appropriate classroom lessons that are taught interactively through stories\, role play\, and song in a non-threatening environment. Portions of the curriculum also provide support and education to teachers and caregivers who can help to keep kids safe. \nAll participants will receive electronic copies of SSC© curriculum materials\, classroom presentation aids\, and coordination paperwork. DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nThis course empowers faith communities to recognize and respond to cases of sexual abuse\, physical abuse\, emotional abuse\, and neglect. Included are discussions detailing the impact of child abuse on a victim’s sense of spirituality and offering concrete suggestions for working with medical and mental health professionals to assist a child in coping with maltreatment. The course also discusses ideal child protection policies for a faith-based institution\, including handling a situation in which a convicted sex offender seeks to join a congregation. SUMMARY:Zero Abuse Project Serving LGBTQIA+ Children and Families in the Child Abuse MDT Process
DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nThis course will provide an overview of affirmative practices for all multidisciplinary team (MDT) professionals supporting and serving LGBTQIA+ children\, youth and families when responding to child abuse and maltreatment. In addition to providing an overview of gender and sexuality terminology\, some of the topics covered will include cultural considerations when working with LGBQTIA+ children\, youth and families\, working with caregivers that are not supportive of LGBTQIA+ youth\, preparing the team\, family and child for the process\, allyship\, pronouns\, engaging community partners\, vetting resources for LGBQTIA+ families\, considerations for the forensic protocol and the use of interview aids. While considerations for the forensic interview will be discussed in this course\, the primary focus of this training is on the MDT\, as a whole. \nThis training is appropriate for law enforcement\, prosecuting attorneys\, child protection workers\, forensic interviewers\, mental health professionals\, medical providers\, advocates\, community liaisons\, and youth serving professionals that may interact with LGBTQIA+ children and youth. \nThis event will be held virtually via Zoom. The target audiences for this training include non-medical professionals who have frequent contact with children or participate in child abuse investigations\, evaluations\, or legal proceedings related to maltreatment concerns. \n\nAbout the Presenter\n\n\nMark Hudson\, MD\, received his Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Minnesota and completed a Pediatrics residency at the University of Minnesota. Following residency\, he completed a Child Abuse Fellowship and is Board Certified in Child Abuse Pediatrics. Dr. Hudson is a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics and a member of the Ray Helfer Society. He is the Medical Director of Midwest Children’s Resource Center\, a medically based Child Advocacy Center at Children’s Minnesota. He is the Executive Director of the Midwest Regional Child Advocacy Center. \n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Midwest Children’s Resource Center and Midwest Regional Children’s Advocacy Center\nThe Midwest Children’s Resource Center (MCRC) is an accredited child advocacy center by the National Children’s Alliance and a clinic with Children’s Minnesota that offers medical evaluation and case management in alleged child abuse cases\, serious neglect\, and witness to violence. \nRegistration – $10\nWe are excited to host this training for this month. SUMMARY:Medical Evaluation of Child Sexual Abuse: What Can't We Be More Like CSI?
DESCRIPTION:Brief Overview\nA child abuse pediatrician will present an overview of the medical evaluation for suspected sexual abuse. Examples of the different roles between physician and nurse providers will be outlined stressing the necessity of specialized training regardless of degree and the importance of participating in ongoing education and case review for quality assurance. Salient features of how the exam is performed\, findings interpreted\, and when/how collection of DNA/laboratory specimens are collected. Specific attention will be paid to why most children who have been sexually abused will have “normal” exams and why that typically does not discount or rule out a child’s disclosure of sexual assault/abuse. Content will be appropriate for both medical and non-medical child abuse professionals. \nExpert Presenter\nKaren Farst\, MD\, MPH\, has worked as a child abuse pediatrician with the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences\, Center for Children at Risk and Arkansas Children’s Hospital since 2004. After an internal medicine/pediatrics residency\, she was in primary care private practice for 3 years before completing a fellowship in child abuse pediatrics at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital. Her work duties at Arkansas Children’s Hospital include medical evaluations and court testimony for cases of abuse and neglect\, education of medical and non-medical professionals on the medical aspects of child maltreatment\, and administrative leadership of the Center for Children at Risk located in the Clark Center for Safe and Healthy Children on the campus of Arkansas Children’s Hospital. \nRegister online
