SUMMARY:CornerHouse Basic Forensic Interview Training for MDT Members
DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nThis training teaches the CornerHouse Forensic Interview Protocol™ a credible\, reliable\, developmentally flexible and non-traumatic forensic interview protocol appropriate for children\, adolescents and vulnerable adults involved in a sexual abuse investigation. Training methods include lecture and discussion\, review of CornerHouse video-recorded interviews\, skill-building exercises\, and an interview practicum. These courses are designed for teams of forensic interviewers\, child protection workers\, tribal social service investigators\, law enforcement officers and prosecuting attorneys. Participants are encouraged to attend as a multidisciplinary team. Courses are outcome-based and include an exam upon completion. This course is restricted to members who are actively a part of a Multi-Disciplinary Team. \nThis training is taking place in-person in Roseville\, MN. Each day training will take place from 8:00am-4:30pm Central Time. Friday will be a half day from 8:00am-12:30pm. SUMMARY:Responding to Sextortion Related Offenses Against Children
DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nNational Criminal Justice Training Center (NCJTC) of Fox Valley Technical College is hosting a training opportunity for professionals in law enforcement\, prosecution\, and related court officials with Detective Edward Merritt. \nSextortion using technology is an increasing trend seen by law enforcement. Sextortion refers to the crime where someone employs an abuse of power\, usually a threat to expose explicit images\, in order to coerce a person to do something. DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nHuman trafficking affects an estimated 50 million victims globally\, with approximately 400\,000 individuals exploited in the United States through sex trafficking\, labor trafficking\, or domestic servitude. This illicit trade generates staggering profits—approximately $240 billion annually—surpassing the earnings of major Fortune 500 companies such as Apple\, Amazon\, and Disney. \nTraditionally\, law enforcement has relied heavily on victim testimony to secure convictions against traffickers. However\, this approach presents significant challenges\, as proving a human trafficking case often depends on victims who may be unable or unwilling to testify due to fear\, trauma\, or other barriers. \nFortunately\, alternative strategies exist to target traffickers effectively. Like narcotics trafficking\, human trafficking generates enormous profits that are difficult to hide. DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nShaken Baby Syndrome (SBS)\, also known as Abusive Head Trauma (AHT)\, is one of the most devastating forms of child abuse\, often resulting in lifelong disability or death. This training will provide a comprehensive overview of SBS/AHT\, including the underlying biomechanical forces\, sentinel injuries\, signs and symptoms\, and long-term consequences for infants and families. DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nJoin Geoff Sidoli\, MSW\, LCSW\, for a live\, virtual training on children and youth who exhibit problematic sexual behaviors (PSB). The presentation will address historical beliefs that inappropriately labeled\, criminalized\, and pathologized these kids while providing more accurate details about the nature and origins of their sexual behaviors. \nThese behaviors between children can range from experimentation and exploration that are developmentally normal\, to unwanted\, exploitive\, and abusive in nature. Distinguishing between appropriate and problematic sexual behavior can be difficult. These cases often warrant a thorough approach to understand the unique qualities of children and youth that cause sexual harm. \nThe session will cover the best practices for this population\, empirically supported services to address sexualized behaviors\, ongoing challenges for CAC and MDT leadership\, and supports to improve the overall lives of these kids. Participants will receive guidance on suitable services and resources to improve the coordinated response to children and families. In addition\, the training will discuss the need to train\, develop\, and sustain treatment resources for children and youth with PSB. SUMMARY:IHS | Intrafamilial Child Torture: Victim Impact and Professional Intervention
DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nIntrafamilial Child Torture (ICT) is a severe form of child abuse where parents or caregivers torture their own children. This often includes the perpetration of physical\, sexual\, and psychological torture and malicious neglect used as tactics to meet the psychopathological needs of the caregiver. ICT presents with unique family dynamics and perpetrator psychopathology that is different from typical maltreatment. It is often missed or misbelieved due to the extreme nature of the harm and sophistication of the perpetrator. Many ICT cases are not discovered until there has been a child fatality\, but we can learn from these cases\, intervene\, and prevent future fatalities. This training will provide a brief review of “What is ICT?”\, discuss the impact of ICT on children\, give recommendations for the many fields involved in child protection\, and provide an overview of 15 clinical and non-clinical interventions that have been helpful for ICT survivors. \nThis training is designed for the intermediate to advanced level professional\, but beginners and students are encouraged to attend to listen and observe. This training will combine lecture\, Q&A\, group discussion\, and real-life case examples. \nLearning Objectives\n\nExplain how developmental trauma impacts ICT survivors.\nAdvocate for the use of meaningful interdisciplinary collaboration on ICT cases in their community.\nDescribe one clinical and one non-clinical intervention that has been helpful for ICT survivors.\n\nAbout the Trainer\nPamela J. Miller\, JD\, MSW\, LISW-S\, is a clinical social worker and attorney with expertise in trauma and child abuse law. Since 2019\, she has led the Child Maltreatment Policy Resource Center’s Intrafamilial Child Torture (ICT) initiative\, co-authoring policy papers\, training professionals\, and providing legal counsel in state supreme court cases on child torture. Ms. Miller is a Certified Trauma Practitioner with advanced training in the Neurosequential Model of Therapeutics\, Body-Based Trauma Treatment\, and Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy\, along with training in PCIT/CARE\, Child-Centered Play Therapy\, and Attachment-Based Play Therapy. She has served as a psychotherapist\, an attorney-GAL for maltreated children\, and held executive roles in public mental health. \nMs. Miller earned her JD/MSW from the University of Cincinnati and her law degree from Ohio State University Moritz College of Law\, where she was a Moritz Merit Scholar and recipient of the Bergstrom Fellowship from the University of Michigan College of Law. The best way to learn this is to ask the victims who received the services. \niMPRoVE is a free tool developed with funding and support from the U.S. Office for Victims of Crime\, Office on Violence Against Women\, and the National Institute of Justice that helps providers to do just that. It is an online platform that helps any and all types of victim-serving organizations create a customized survey for collecting feedback from victims on the services they received.
