SUMMARY:NCAC Getting the Best Information from a Narrative Child Witness
DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nForensic interviewers often focus much attention on strategies for interviewing reluctant children. Alternatively\, there are also skills to be developed and generously applied when interviewing a highly narrative child. The use of invitations\, breadth and depth questions\, open and specific ‘wh-’ questions and limited use of option posing questions provides a framework for understanding and moving through a child’s narration of remembered event(s). \nThis training is recommended for forensic interviewers at any level who wish to increase their ability to obtain the most complete and accurate information from a child witness. \nRegister through NCAC\nRegister by Wednesday\, February 5\, 2025.

SUMMARY:CornerHouse | Multi-Session Forensic Interviews: When and Why They Should Be Considered
DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nChildren and youth have individual needs based on their age and development. The CornerHouse Forensic Interview Protocol is a person-centered\, semi-structured\, and forensically sound process to gather information from individuals who are identified as victims and/or witnesses of an alleged crime. There are times when it is necessary to adjust a traditional model of a one session forensic interview for the unique needs of the individual\, including interviewing the individual over multiple sessions. This is identified as a Planned Multiple Session Interview (or multisession). Understanding when a multisession interview is necessary and how to conduct a multisession interview may be beneficial to maximize the individual’s ability or opportunity to share their experience. \nThis training will review the literature regarding multiple-session interviews\, discuss decision-making for selecting appropriate cases for multiple sessions\, and provide guidance on conducting a single forensic interview over multiple sessions. \nObjectives\n\nLearners will understand the benefits of multiple-session forensic interviews in meeting the unique needs of individuals.\nLearners will identify when a multiple-session interview may be necessary.\nLearners will learn to adjust the CornerHouse Forensic Interview Protocol into a Planned Multiple-session interview.\nLearners will explore considerations for the Multidisciplinary Team regarding incorporating multiple session interviews in current practice.\n\nRegister Through CornerHouse\nThis training being offered FREE to MDT members within the state of Minnesota. An ethical humility framework enables you to support your client’s growth and development while upholding your professional responsibilities. \nExploring the micro and macro levels of ethical humility in your work with adolescents ensures that you support your clients’ rights to self-advocacy in your professional role. The complex interplay of individual and parental rights with varied laws and guidelines requires careful consideration. As a child progresses from adolescence to adulthood\, their decision-making capacity evolves. Developing an ethical decision-making process ensures that adolescent clients receive appropriate care from professionals. Adopting an ethical humility perspective strengthens the professional’s ability to meet the client where they are. \nEthical decision-making is crucial for all professionals working with adolescents. This training is designed for investigative teams of law enforcement officers\, social workers\, prosecutors\, child protection attorneys\, and forensic interviewers. \nStudents receive training on the ChildFirst® Forensic Interview Protocol\, which includes child development\, memory and suggestibility\, testifying in court\, legal issues\, and preparing children for court. This training incorporates lecture and discussion\, review of electronically recorded interviews\, skill-building exercises\, and an interview practicum. \nThe ChildFirst® Forensic Interview Protocol is an NCA-approved forensic interview protocol for accreditation. \nThis training will be held in-person at the First Witness Capstan Training Center in Duluth\, MN. \nScholarships are available for county\, tribes\, and other local professionals responsible for child maltreatment investigations and prosecutions in the State of Minnesota. SUMMARY:Changing the Narrative on Suicide and Mental Health
DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nTalking about mental health and suicide can be an uncomfortable and uncertain topic that brings up different feelings\, beliefs\, and attitudes for everyone. Changing the Narrative is an interactive conversation that empowers participants to change perceptions of mental health towards hope and resilience. The goal is to know that individuals are not alone\, help is available\, and healing is possible. \nThroughout the session\, participants will engage in dialog about being intentional in the words we are using. Certain ways of talking about mental health and suicide can alienate members of any community\, sensationalize the issue\, contribute to a decrease in help-seeking behavior\, or even present suicide as a glamorous\, preferred way of dealing with problems. Having healthy conversations about mental health and suicide avoids harmful messages that might increase suicide risk in individuals or undermine suicide prevention goals. By doing this safely\, it reduces stigma\, mitigates risks\, promotes help-seeking\, and respects all individuals. \nAbout the Trainer\n \nTanya Carter is the Suicide Prevention Unit Supervisor for the Minnesota Department of Health. Ms. Carter has 20 plus years of experience in community education programs\, program development\, and crisis intervention. She is passionate about suicide prevention and reducing the stigma related to mental illness. Prior to joining the Minnesota Department of Health\, Ms. Carter worked in tribal and county government\, coordinating and leading mental health\, mobile crisis\, and suicide prevention efforts in rural Minnesota. Ms. Carter is a safeTALK\, ASIST\, Postvention and CALM trainer.
