DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nThis virtual training provides multidisciplinary team members an understanding of the research and proper use to assist with investigation and prosecution when forensic interviews include the use of interviewing aids of anatomical dolls and diagrams. \nWhile the practice of using anatomical dolls and diagrams is sometimes seen as contentious in the field of forensic interviewing\, research shows the appropriate use of dolls and diagrams within the guidance of a nationally recognized protocol can increase forensically relevant information and accuracy within the forensic interview. \nThis training will summarize relevant research on dolls and diagrams\, provide an overview of their purposeful and appropriate use in the forensic interview\, and address common defense challenges to the use of dolls and diagrams. DESCRIPTION:Conference Overview\nSince 1988\, the Office for Victims of Crime (OVC) has sponsored 17 Indian Nations: Justice for Victims of Crime Conferences (Indian Nations Conferences) that have attracted thousands of Tribal\, state\, local\, and federal personnel responsible for meeting the needs of American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) victims of crime. The conference purpose ties in with two Department of Justice Strategic goals\, including the prevention and intervention of crimes against vulnerable populations and the upholding of the rights of\, and improved services to\, America’s crime victims. SUMMARY:APSAC Trauma Informed Care (Spanish)
DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nApproximately 50% of the population will experience some type of possibly traumatic event (e.g.\, exposure to violence in the home or community\, physical\, emotional or sexual abuse\, natural disaster\, violent death of a loved one\, etc.) during their lifetime.  Exposure to trauma significantly increases the risk of developing mental health disorders including Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)\, anxiety\, depression\, suicidal ideation and self-harm behaviors\, substance use\, among others. The objectives of this workshop are to: 1) Define what trauma and adverse childhood experiences are\, 2) Describe the impact of trauma and common warning signs/symptoms of trauma by developmental level; 3) Describe what trauma-informed care is and provide practical coping strategies to use with youth. \n*This training will be offered in Spanish \nAproximadamente 50% de la población experimentará algún tipo de evento posiblemente traumático (ej..\, exposición a violencia en el hogar o comunidad\, abuso físico\, emocional o sexual\, desastre natural\, muerte violenta de un ser querido\, etc.) durante la vida. This training incorporates lecture and discussion\, review of electronically recorded interviews\, skill-building exercises\, and an interview practicum.  \nThis training will be held in person in the Duluth\, MN area.  \nScholarships are available for county\, tribes\, and other local professionals responsible for child maltreatment investigations and prosecutions in the State of Minnesota. DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nInvestigators and other practitioners advised to conduct minimal facts interviewing are often told to limit themselves to who\, what\, when\, and where.  But how?  Children are notoriously poor at estimating dates\, which means that “when” can pose difficulties.  Worse\, it can lead to estimates of dating that will lead to inconsistencies and impeachment of the child’s story. Furthermore\, children are reluctant to describe genital touch\, and often ill-equipped to specify the nature of the touch.  Again\, mistakes in eliciting the early report can easily lead to problems for the case down the road. Based on research in child interviewing and developmental psychology\, I’ll discuss how practitioners can avoid these pitfalls and conduct productive minimal facts interviews. \nAbout the Trainer\nThomas D. Lyon\, JD\, PhD \nThomas D. Lyon’s goal is to identify the most productive means of questioning children about abuse and violence. He is the Judge Edward J. and Ruey L. Guirado Chair in Law and Psychology at the University of Southern California Gould School of Law. SUMMARY:Integrating Racial Socialization in TF-CBT Therapy for Black Youth & Family
DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nThe negative consequences of trauma (e.g.\, physical abuse) take a disproportionate toll on Black youth due to the compounding stress of unique race related stressors (e.g.\, witnessing police brutality in the media\, microaggressions). This workshop provides an overview of interpersonal and racial trauma; presents research on systemic\, organizational\, client\, and provider barriers and facilitators to mental health service utilization; and discusses strategies clinicians can PRACTICE (Psychoeducation\, Relaxation\, Affect identification and modulation\, Cognitive restructuring\, Trauma narrative\, In-vivo exposure\, Conjoint parent-child sessions\, Enhancing safety) to integrate racial socialization into treatment to help Black clients heal from interpersonal and racial stress and trauma.\nAbout the Trainer\nDr. Isha Metzger is an Assistant Professor of Psychology at the University of Georgia and Visiting Research Faculty at the Center for Interdisciplinary Research on AIDS’ at Yale University. Dr. Metzger earned her PhD in Clinical-Community Psychology from the University of South Carolina\, she completed her pre-doctoral internship at the Medical University of South Carolina\, and she received postdoctoral training both at the National Crime Victims Center and at Yale University. As Director of The EMPOWER Lab at UGA\, Dr. Metzger focuses on reducing mental health disparities through “Engaging Minorities in Prevention\, Outreach\, Wellness\, Education\, & Research.” Dr. Metzger’s systematic research program is aimed at elucidating the role of culturally specific risk (e.g.\, racial discrimination) and protective (e.g.\, racial socialization) factors to better inform cognitive-behavioral outcomes for Black youth receiving evidence-based services for interpersonal and racial stress and trauma in “real world” settings. Dr. Metzger is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist who offers award-winning instruction\, supervision\, training\, and consultation to students\, professionals\, and organizations across the nation on the delivery of evidence-based treatments for underserved individuals seeking mental health treatment for a range of problems. Gather new tools and resources for the most comprehensive case outcomes. \nLearning Objectives\n\nUnderstand current child pornography trends\nApply research discussing the relationship between contact offenses and child pornography\nConsider current legal issues relating to child pornography and child sexual abuse cases\nLeverage interview and interrogation techniques that maximize evidence discovery in sexual abuse cases\nUnderstand ICAC task force’s role in investigating child pornography\nConsider opportunities to enhance investigations through multi-disciplinary investigative strategies\n\nAbout the Trainers\nDavid Frattare Director of State Investigations / ICAC Commander\, Cuyahoga County Prosecutors Office\, Ohio Internet Crimes Against Children Task ForceDavid Frattare currently serves as the Statewide Commander for the Cuyahoga County Prosecutor’s Office\, Ohio Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force. Commander Frattare is responsible for the investigation\, coordination and supervision of investigations involving the sexual exploitation of children and serves as the national representative for the Internet Crimes Against Children program in Ohio. From 1997 to 2009\, Commander Frattare was employed as a Special Agent with the Pennsylvania Office of Attorney General’s Bureau of Criminal Investigation and Child Predator Unit. Commander Frattare is a Special Deputy with the Cuyahoga County Sheriff’s Office and a Task Force Officer with Homeland Security Investigations Cleveland. He is an Associate Instructor for the National Criminal Justice Training Center at Fox Valley Technical College\, a Law Enforcement Trainer for The Innocent Justice Foundation\, and a Senior Chaplain with the International Fellowship of Chaplains. \nPauline Renick has been in Law Enforcement for 37 years. Currently\, she is working as a crime analyst in the area of Internet Crimes Against Children. She also served as a Task Force Officer for the Department of Homeland Security Investigations. Her previous assignments included Mountain Bike Patrol\, Patrol Division\, D.A.R.E. Officer\, High School Resource Officer\, Field Training Officer and Master Patrol Officer. She has experience working cases of child sexual assault\, child abuse and domestic violence related crimes. She also worked these types of cases during her assignment as a Special Agent for the US Army Criminal Investigation Division Command (CID). She is the only female recipient of the Medal of Valor in the history of her department. Pauline is also a child forensic interviewer and involved in the community providing educational information to teens\, parents and specialized professions\, regarding the topic of the Internet Crimes Against Children \nRegister at NCJTC\nThe registration fee includes 16 hours of training\, program materials\, and instructional costs. Participants are responsible for costs and arrangements related to meals\, travel\, and lodging.

SUMMARY:NCJTC Child Sex Trafficking: Forensic Interview Training
DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nDevelop the skills and techniques to conduct developmentally appropriate forensic interviews with victims of child sex trafficking. Learn the differences between interviewing children in child abuse cases and interviewing child sex trafficking victims. Review victim-centered interview methodology with special emphasis given to understanding the factors contributing to child sex trafficking victimization and the impact on development and effects of trauma. Learn to gather information regarding the use of technology in the child sex trafficking business model and the multitude of crimes that traffickers commit\, including the use of child sexual abuse material. \nRegister Through OJP\nThe deadline to register is Wednesday\, October 23\, 2024. \nThis is an advanced course. Please make sure you meet the prerequisites before registering.
