DESCRIPTION:Information on Problematic Sexual Behavior: Cognitive Behavior Therapy with Dr. Jane F. Silovsky\nRegister: Webinar Series Hosted by APSAC \nWorkshop Description\nProblematic sexual behavior (PSB) of children is a commonly misunderstood behavioral health concern. The taboo nature of the topic of “sex” hinders openness to understanding even typical sexual behavior of children. Decisions are made on myths rather than on research on PSB in children\, including its responsivity to treatment. \nThis presentation will begin with foundational information on the continuum of sexual behavior in youth\, prevalence of problematic and illegal sexual behavior\, common misconceptions\, and components of effective interventions. Problematic Sexual Behavior: Cognitive Behavior Therapy will be described and information provided on the learning collaborative training process and how to access training. \nSpeaker Biography\nJane F. DESCRIPTION:Minnesota Children’s Alliance (Alliance) is excited to host CAC Advocacy with Vulnerable Adult Populations\, with Kylee Pass\, advocacy and prevention program coordinator with First Witness 9 – 11 a.m.\, Thursday\, April 20\, 2022\, via Zoom HealthCare. \nTraining Overview\nChildren’s Advocacy Centers (CAC) historically provide developmentally appropriate\, trauma-informed care to children and adolescents\, and their families. Vulnerable adults who report sexual abuse or assault also benefit from this holistic model of care. This training supports victim advocates working in CAC’s that currently or are considering supporting vulnerable adults in a multidisciplinary team response. Using the Six Core Principles of Social Change Advocacy\, participants will learn how to meet the unique needs of this population. The training will cover institutional supports and barriers\, and how to implement the systems change model within the CAC model. \nLearning Objectives\n\nParticipants will gain knowledge and understanding of the history of advocating for vulnerable adult populations.\nParticipants will learn how to ground advocacy for vulnerable adult populations in the Six Core Principles of Social Change Advocacy.\nParticipants will gain an understanding of how to advocate for the inclusion of vulnerable adults into their multidisciplinary team’s CAC model.\n\nPresenter Bio\nKylee Pass currently serves as the advocacy and prevention program coordinator for First Witness Child Advocacy Center (CAC). Kylee also serves as a national level trainer and facilitates various advocacy training opportunities including a National Children’s Alliance accredited training created to help other families and child advocates around the nation build upon their advocacy skills and perspectives. \nShe holds a Bachelor’s and Master of Social Work from the University of Minnesota- Duluth. In her education\, Kylee had a special interest in working with survivors of violence and a focus on Women\, Gender\, and Sexuality studies as well as LGBTQIA+ studies. DESCRIPTION:Training Details\nMinnesota Children’s Alliance (Alliance) is excited to host Working with Latino Children and Families Within the MDT Process\, with Liz Franklin\, MSW\, LICSW\, senior manager of community-based mental health services at Comunidades Latinas Unidas en Servicio. The training is 9 a.m. – 11 a.m.\, Tuesday\, March 15\, 2022\, via the Zoom platform. \nIn this session\, participants will examine the role of cultural responsiveness among the larger Latino experiences within the context of the North American system. Through the trauma-informed care approach\, participants will be introduced to common misconceptions when working with members of Latino communities\, in order to promote further healing. \nLearning Objectives\n\nUnderstand ways in which culture and privilege impact provider\, organization\, and system functioning.\nDiscuss individual and systems practices to improve access to care.\nExplore options for delivering evidence-based models such as TF-CBT in more culturally resonant ways.\n\nPresenter Bio\nElizabeth (Liz)\, Franklin MSW\, LICSW\, received her BAs from the University of Kansas in Spanish and in American Studies\, and her MSW from the University of Minnesota. Liz has worked as an elementary school Latino family liaison\, a children’s mental health case manager\, a school-based therapist\, and an outpatient therapist in private practice. She is currently the senior manager of community-based mental health services at Comunidades Latinas Unidas en Servicio (CLUES). Liz also teaches the Advanced Clinical Practice with Children and Adolescents course in the School of Social Work’s graduate program at the University of Minnesota. \nThroughout her career\, she has focused on working with kids and families\, often in under-served communities\, who have experienced complex trauma and/or symptoms of anxiety\, depression\, Autism\, Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder\, and other learning or developmental differences. Liz is fluent in Spanish and primarily works with first\, second\, and subsequent generations of Latina/o/x immigrants. Reducing barriers to inclusive\, culturally responsive services through provider development has been a core part of Liz’s work. Her professional experiences have demonstrated to her the importance and difficulty of navigating mental health\, educational\, and social service systems\, and she is passionate about helping families and caregivers understand and work with the multiple systems that impact their children in a more empowered way. \nRegistration – $30 \nWe are excited to bring this training to you. DESCRIPTION:Training Details\nMinnesota Children’s Alliance (Alliance) is excited to host Homelands\, History\, Healing: An Opportunity to Expand\, Educate\, and Empower in Order to Better Serve Tribal and Non-Tribal Children and Their Families\, with Shannon CrossBear\, 2 p.m. – 4 p.m.\, Tuesday\, Feb. 15\, 2022\, via Zoom HealthCare. \nIn this session participants will learn about some history as well as the current political and social status of American Indians and Alaskan Natives in the U.S. Participants will be introduced to the world relational framework and explore how using such a framework had the potential to support healing. \nLearning Objectives\n\nUnderstand the historical context of Tribal nations and their citizens.\nDiscuss how relationship building is foundational in working with this population.\nDiscover ways to embed culturally congruent practices into the therapeutic practice.\n\nPresenter Bio\nShannon CrossBear articulates her purpose as: “To demonstrate and promote gentle healing.” She expresses her commitment to healing through her work in the world. Her own community and family history propelled her to develop leadership in order to address disparities that have led to poor outcomes for friends and relatives. Shannon’s work has included facilitating and consulting with the National Indian Child Welfare Association\, the Federation of Families for Children’s Mental Health\, Georgetown University\, The National Child Traumatic Stress Network\, and the Surgeon General’s Conference on Children’s Mental Health. She has worked with tribal and non-tribal communities in providing technical assistance to Systems of Care and Circles of Care utilizing traditional interventions and the promotion of culturally congruent and trauma-informed practices. \nShannon has worked in communities throughout the contiguous United States and Alaska\, as well as within Canada\, to address systemic change for improved outcomes for children and their families. Shannon has facilitated and supported practices and services that include the provision of culturally cemented early childhood\, parenting programs\, supports for transition-age youth and young adults\, and families with mental health and substance abuse issues. Shannon is skilled in trauma-informed community engagement. She has worked with supporting organized stakeholder voice and representation at local and national levels through various behavioral health initiatives. \nShannon continues to work with others to demonstrate and promote practices that lead to better outcomes for her friends and relatives. \nRegistration – $30 \nWe are excited to bring this training to you. SUMMARY:APSAC Forensic Interviewing Children with Disabilities
DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nForensic Interviewing Children with Disabilities is an eight-part webinar series designed to assist interviewers in advancing their skills of interviewing children with disabilities in the most developmentally appropriate\, non-leading\, non-suggestive\, legally defensible way possible. Participants who complete each of the eight modules in the series will receive a certificate indicating participation and completion of the program.  It is required to complete all eight modules to receive this certificate. Certificates will not be issued for individual modules. \nAll sessions (February 1\, 15; March 1\, 15\, 29; April 12\, 26; May 10) will take place from 10:00 am to 11:30 pm ET on Tuesdays. The program will take place remotely through the use of live interactive webinars over Zoom. \nView details for each session and register online through APSAC. \nContinuing Education\nAPSAC is recognized as a provider of psychology and social work continuing education credits. Participating psychologists and social workers will receive 12 contact hours in the course and a certificate of completion will clearly note the number of credits awarded. Participants applying for CE credits must participate in all 8 sessions.  The cost of continuing education credits is $40 for the entire course. She currently works as a forensic interview specialist with Zero Abuse Project where she provides training and technical assistance to child abuse professionals\, designs and develops curricula\, and conducts forensic interviews at community-based centers. Rachel most recently served as the program director for the Minnesota Children’s Alliance. \nPrior to her work at the Alliance\, Rachel served as a forensic interviewer and the forensic program coordinator at First Witness Child Advocacy Center. SUMMARY:Interviewing Juvenile Sex Trafficking Victims
DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nThis module will address the fundamental and most critical component of investigations involving child/adolescent victims of commercial sexual exploitation – the interview of the victim. Participants will learn about the FBI’s forensic interviewing protocol and how it is utilized when interviewing these victims. Victim dynamics and barriers that impact the victims’ reluctance to disclose will be addressed. This module will provide participants with the tools and skills necessary to identify and overcome the challenges of these difficult interviews. \nLearning Objectives\n\nParticipants will understand how interviewing juvenile sex trafficking (JST) victims is different but still requires a protocol-based interview.\nParticipants will understand the dynamics of JST victims and how this impacts their disclosures.\nParticipants will understand how to overcome disclosure barriers.\n\nTrainer\nPresenter Bonnie I. Fries\, MSW\, LCSW\, Child & Adolescent Forensic Interviewer\, with the Federal Bureau of Investigations\, is a licensed clinical social worker in the state of Illinois with specialized training in child and adolescent welfare and abuse-related trauma. She received her Bachelor of Social Work degree in 1998 from Illinois State University’s Jane Addams College of Social Work and Master of Social Work degree in 2001 from the University of Illinois at Chicago. Prior to joining the FBI Bonnie worked as an Assistant Director and Director within Children’s Advocacy Centers\, and has conducted more than 2\,000 forensic interviews. \nContinuing Education Credits\nPOST and Social Work credits will be available. \nWe are excited to bring this training to you at a minimal fee. DESCRIPTION:Due to the strong response to this training\, we’ve partnered to hold a second session for those who’re unable to register for the first session held in July 2021. \nTraining Overview\nMinnesota Children’s Alliance (the Alliance) is excited to host Extended Forensic Interviews: Practical skills for multiple session care\, with Rita Farrell\, Forensic Interview and Director of ChildFirst® for Zero Abuse Project\, and Julie Stauffer\, LICSW\, Forensic Interviewing Manager with CornerHouse\, Wednesday\, July 14\, 2021\, 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.\, via Zoom HealthCare. \nBased on the nationally recognized ChildFirst® Forensic Interview and CornerHouse Forensic Interview Protocol™ models\, this one-day training will give an overview of conducting multiple-session forensic interviews when a child may not succeed in a standard\, single-session interview due to trauma\, development\, special needs\, or other complicating factors\, including poly-victimization. This advanced training will discuss the multi-session and expanded interview processes; provide practical information for conducting follow-up interviews; and offer real-world examples as well as research supporting multiple-session\, non-duplicative interviews with child victims and witnesses. Note that this training will include information and practical skills to prepare participants to appropriately conduct a follow-up forensic interview; however\, this workshop is not intended to replace the more comprehensive training recommended before conducting other types of multiple-session forensic interviews. \nLearning Objectives\nThrough lecture\, discussion\, and practice activities\, participants will: \n\nLearn what a multiple-session forensic interview is\, identify and differentiate various types of multiple-session interviews\, and be introduced to the MultiSession Forensic Interview and Expanded Forensic Interview – two possible models of conducting a defensible\, multiple-session forensic interview\nDiscuss the research that supports conducting a non-duplicative\, multiple-session forensic interview.\nConsider criteria for determining appropriate situations to use a multiple-session interview process with an individual child and examine how to incorporate a multiple-session process into current practice.\n\n\nTrainers\n \nRita Farrell\nDirector of ChildFirst®\nZero Abuse Project\nRita serves as the Director of ChildFirst® for Zero Abuse Project. Rita is a certified law enforcement instructor and provides training and technical assistance for child protection professionals. Rita currently conducts forensic interviews and has interviewed more than 2\,500 children. She serves as an expert witness on child sexual abuse\, authored many peer-reviewed articles specific to forensic interviewing\, and continues to champion the cause of child advocacy and the field of forensic interviewing. Rita graduated from Ball State University with a degree in secondary education and was the founding executive director of Chaucie’s Place\, a Child Advocacy Center in Hamilton County\, Indiana. \nJulie Stauffer\nForensic Interviewing Manager\nCornerHouse\nJulie is a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker with a Master’s and Bachelors’s Degree in Social Work. Julie is the Forensic Interviewing Manager at CornerHouse\, where she supervises CornerHouse’s team of forensic interviewers and manages the forensic interview program. Additionally in her roles as a Forensic Interviewer and Trainer\, Julie conducts forensic interviews with children\, adolescents\, and vulnerable adults regarding allegations of abuse or witnessing of violence; provides training for professionals in basic and advanced forensic interviewing skills and regarding other related topics\, conducting training on a local\, national\, and international level; testifies as an expert witness; has authored and co-authored published articles regarding forensic interviewing; serves as a moderator for a national\, online peer review process; participates in local and national task forces and committees; and engages in ongoing updating and development of the CornerHouse Forensic Interview Protocol™ and other practices. DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nThe use of technology has impacted how children/adolescents are victimized. Research supports that the use of technology during victimization can increase the likelihood that a victim will not disclose. Most interview models are designed for children who have previously disclosed and who transition easily from the beginning of the interview to a substantive interview. Reluctant children may need more cues which may mean utilizing evidence in the forensic interview. SUMMARY:First Witness ChildFirst® Forensic Interview Training
DESCRIPTION:General Information\nThe ChildFirst® Forensic Interview Protocol training brings the field into the classroom\, enhancing the proficiency of front-line child abuse professionals. This course is designed for investigative teams of law enforcement officers\, social workers\, prosecutors\, child protection attorneys\, and forensic interviewers. Students receive training on the ChildFirst® Forensic Interview Protocol\, child development\, memory and suggestibility\, testifying in court\, legal issues\, and preparing children for court. This training incorporates lecture and discussion\, review of electronically recorded interviews\, skill-building exercises\, and an interview practicum with professional actors. \nChildFirst® is a unique approach to forensic interviewing for several reasons:\n\nChildFirst® was designed by and for the front-line child abuse professional.\nCourses teach students to apply the latest research to real-world situations.\nStudents watch numerous videotaped child sexual abuse interviews as a means of bringing the course material to life.\nThe program requires students to demonstrate their interviewing skills.\nChildFirst® models the multidisciplinary approach.\nThe education incorporates a practicum forensic interview with a trained actor portraying a child abuse victim.\nThe program encourages ongoing critiques of students’ interviewing skills to improve their technique.\nThe ChildFirst® forensic interview course has been approved by the National Children’s Alliance to meet accreditation standards.\n\nWhat’s new?\nWe know that narrative practice and invitations are the best way to reduce suggestibility and create a child-centered interview. The narrative invitation is utilized throughout the interview process and taught in the forensic interview training. We have made subtle yet essential changes in how interview instructions are incorporated in the interview. \nFirst Witness’s updated protocol and training information will prepare each attendee to conduct a purposeful and legally defensible interview. This training is designed for child protection workers\, tribal social service workers\, law enforcement officers\, and county attorneys whose primary responsibility is investigating and prosecuting child sexual abuse cases. \nContinuing Education Credits\nP.O.S.T. and C.L.E. credits available for Minnesota participants. For other states\, with some notice\, we will do our best to help you obtain pre-approved credits before you attend.
