DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nMinnesota Children’s Alliance (the Alliance) is excited to host Homelands\, History\, Healing: An opportunity to expand\, educate\, and empower in order to better serve tribal and non-tribal children and their families\, with Ms. Shannon Crossbear\, Tuesday\, November 10\, 2020\, 10:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.\, via Zoom HealthCare. \nIn this session\, participants will learn about the historical as well as the current political and social status of American Indians and Alaskan Natives in the United States. Participants will be introduced to the world relational framework and explore how using such a framework has the potential to support healing. \nLearning Objectives\n\nUnderstand the historical context of Tribal nations and their citizens.\nDiscuss how relationship building is foundational in working with this population.\nDiscover ways to embed culturally congruent practices into the therapeutic.\n\nTrainer\nMs. Crossbear’s work includes facilitating and consulting with the National Indian Child Welfare Association\, the Federation of Families for Children’s Mental Health\, Georgetown University\, The National Child Traumatic Stress Network\, and the Surgeon General’s Conference on Children’s Mental Health. SUMMARY:Trauma-Informed Care in the COVID-19 Era: ACES\, Telehealth and Beyond
DESCRIPTION:Trainer\nPresenter Megan Gerber\, MD\, MPH is a general internist with a career-long focus on the medical care of trauma-exposed women. She is currently an Associate Professor of Medicine at Boston University and Medical Director of Women’s Health at VA Boston. She holds an adjunct appointment as Lecturer on Medicine at Harvard Medical School. Her work focuses on optimizing medical outcomes for women who have experienced trauma as well as adapting systems of care to be trauma-informed and sensitive to the needs of survivors. She has authored multiple peer-reviewed publications on intimate partner violence and is the editor of the recently released Springer book\, “Trauma-informed Healthcare Approaches: A Guide for Primary Care.” \nTraining Overview\nIn this presentation\, Dr. Gerber will review the long-term health impact adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and other traumas have on patients in adult primary care. She will discuss the ways in which the COVID-19 pandemic\, and other recent collective adversities\, may be worsening outcomes for trauma-exposed persons. DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nThis webinar will discuss best practices for interviewing children who recant their previous disclosure of sexual abuse. The webinar will review the research on what factors influence children to recant and listen to clips of interviews in which children recant. Focus will not be on the child’s previous disclosures\, what others have said to the child about their allegations and how the child feels about the changes in their life since the original disclosure. \nTrainer\nDr. Thomas Lyon is the Judge Edward J. and Ruey L. Guirado Chair of Law and Psychology at the University of Southern Gould School of Law. His research examines the best means by which child witnesses can be questioned in order to maximize their productivity and minimize error. DESCRIPTION:The Minnesota Department of Public Safety Office of Justice Programs is currently accepting applications for the 2020 Minnesota Victim Assistance Academy. The academy will be 100% virtual. Learn more about the program. \nProgram Overview\nThe Minnesota Victim Assistance Academy (MNVAA) is a foundational-level educational opportunity for victim service providers and criminal justice professionals offered by the Minnesota Office of Justice Programs (OJP). MNVAA is an intensive course of study designed to improve the quality and consistency of victim services in Minnesota. It uses a multi-disciplinary educational approach to convey the knowledge\, skills\, and attitudes practitioners will need as they seek to restore victims and help them regain control of their lives. The comprehensive curriculum has been created specifically for Minnesota by a multidisciplinary committee assembled by the Minnesota Office of Justice Programs (OJP) and its partners. \nAcademy information and selection criteria are described in the application\, along with directions on how to apply. Applicants who are accepted will be notified via email. Academy students who attend and successfully complete the 40-hour training will receive a certificate of completion. Academic credit is available for an additional fee\, and CEUs/POST credits may be available. \nThe application process is competitive due to limited space. DESCRIPTION:Parents often defend their use of physical punishment by pointing to the norms of their cultural group. Dr. Gershoff will discuss some of the cultural norms regarding physical punishment and what research and science can tell us about each. She will also describe evidence of cultural shifts away from physical punishment in some communities and highlight what these shifts tell us about ways to affect larger community-level change. \nDr. Elizabeth Gershoff is a Professor in the Department of Human Development and Family Sciences and Associate Director of the Population Research Center at the University of Texas at Austin. She is an internationally recognized expert on the effects of physical punishment on children and the 2019 recipient of the Nicholas Hobbs Award recognizing her work advocating on behalf of children.

SUMMARY:ChildFirst® Forensic Interview Training at First Witness
DESCRIPTION:General Information\nThe ChildFirst® forensic interviewing protocol brings the field into the classroom\, enhancing the education of front-line child abuse professionals. This course is designed for investigative teams of law enforcement officers\, social workers\, prosecutors\, child protection attorneys and forensic interviewers. Students receive training on the ChildFirst® Forensic Interview Protocol\, child development\, memory and suggestibility\, testifying in court\, legal issues and preparing children for court. This training incorporates lecture and discussion\, review of electronically recorded interviews\, skill-building exercises and an interview practicum with professional actors. \nChildFirst® is a unique approach to forensic interviewing for several reasons: \n\nChildFirst® was designed by and for the front-line child abuse professional.\nCourses teach students to apply the latest research to real-world situations.\nStudents watch numerous videotaped child sexual abuse interviews as a means of bringing the course material to life.\nThe program requires students to demonstrate their interviewing skills.\nChildFirst® models the multidisciplinary approach.\nThe education incorporates an actual forensic interview with a child sexual abuse victim.\nThe program encourages ongoing critiques of students’ interviewing skills in order to improve their technique.\nThe ChildFirst® forensic interview course has been approved by the National Children’s Alliance to meet accreditation standards.\n\nTraining cost: $950.00 \nRegister online \nWhat’s new?\nWe know that narrative practice and invitations are the best way to reduce suggestibility and create a child centered interview. Narrative invitation is utilized throughout the interview process and taught in the forensic interview training. We have made subtle\, yet important changes in how interview instructions are incorporated in the interview. \nFirst Witness’ updated protocol and training information will prepare each training attendee to conduct a purposeful and legally defensible interview. \nThis training is designed for child protection workers\, tribal social service workers\, law enforcement officers and county attorneys whose primary responsibility is investigating and prosecuting child sexual abuse cases. \nContinuing Education Credits\nP.O.S.T. and C.L.E credits available for Minnesota participants. Kaelie graduated from St. Olaf College with degrees in sociology and anthropology\, women’s and gender studies\, and family studies. Kaelie is also a state-certified sexual assault/domestic violence advocate with over 100 hours of trauma-informed training. \nKaelie most recently worked at Carleton College as an Assistant Dean of Admissions where they worked closely with Carleton’s Gender & Sexuality Center and coordinated Carleton’s Green Dot Bystander Intervention program to train hundreds of student leaders on how to be an active bystander. Kaelie is passionate about working with young people\, educating others on LGBTQIA+ best practices\, and is thrilled to be working at a non-profit so close to their heart. \nRachel Johnson\nForensic Interview Specialist\nZero Abuse Project \nRachel Johnson (she/her/they/them) has over a decade of experience in work related to child abuse\, forensic interviewing\, multidisciplinary teams\, victimization\, advocacy\, prevention education\, and family violence\, both domestically and abroad. She currently works as a Forensic Interview Specialist with Zero Abuse Project where she provides training and technical assistance to child abuse professionals\, and designs and develops curriculum. \nRachel most recently served as the Program Director for the Minnesota Children’s Alliance. Prior to her work at the Alliance\, Rachel served as a forensic interviewer and the Forensic Program Coordinator at First Witness Child Advocacy Center. She is trained in multiple forensic interview protocols. Rachel received Bachelor of Science degrees in Public Service\, sociology and Spanish at Hamline University in St. Paul\, Minnesota. Rachel is passionate about working directly with children and families\, supporting front-line professionals and improving the institutional response to victimization by centering the experiences of victims at all levels of consideration and decision- making.

Stephanie then went on to earn her Master of Counseling from MidAmerica Nazarene University in Olathe\, KS. After graduating\, she worked for many years as a forensic interviewer and trainer in Kansas City\, MO. During that time she conducted over 1\,000 interviews with children\, teens\, and vulnerable adults. In 2016 Stephanie moved back to Minnesota and worked as a Victim Assistant Specialist with the Jacob Wetterling Resource Center and the National Child Protection Training Center before joining CornerHouse’s team in January 2019.

She has a Master’s Degree in Social Work and a Certificate in Human Service Management from Boston University. Ms. MacKenzie has years of experience providing training and technical assistance to Children’s Advocacy Centers across the country. \nAlyssa Todd\nAccreditation Program Associate\nAlyssa Todd worked as an Investigative Social Worker for Vermont CPS for almost five years\, then moved to Philadelphia for grad school\, where she continued to work with youth in foster care. She moved back to Vermont and became the Director and Forensic Interviewer of a small Associate Member center in Brattleboro\, VT in 2012. In 2016 the Center became fully Accredited with NCA under Ms. Todd’s leadership. During her time working at a CAC\, her interests were mostly focused on Forensic Interviewing and Vicarious Trauma.

SUMMARY:Problematic Intrafamilial Sexual Behaviors
DESCRIPTION:This interactive training series will follow one family’s journey and increase the participant’s understanding of what problematic sexual behaviors are\, where they come from\, and how to respond empathetically and in the best interest of all the children. \nPlease note\, this training will take place over three sessions\, the first of which will be held on July 14. When you complete the registration below\, you will have the opportunity to indicate your attendance at all sessions. \nTraining Overview\nThe training utilizes an interactive module from the intervention Problematic Sexual Behavior – Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Adolescents (PSB-CBT-A) where participants explore common reactions of caregivers. Participants also practice the best ways to engage with families and how to offer concrete solutions that address safety concerns within the home. DESCRIPTION:As a generation raised on technology\, kids today are turning to the internet to fill in the gaps their sex education has left open. \nWebinar Overview\nKids are exposed to pornography at high rates due to free and accessible porn websites. On these websites\, children can easily confuse violent\, misogynistic\, and degrading themes as normal sexual behavior\, and most of the content does not convey a culture that requires consent. \nRegister online.  \nIn this session\, we will discuss the prevalence at which children and adolescents access pornography. SUMMARY:Training for Advocates Working with A Child Advocacy Center
DESCRIPTION:This training meets all essential components in the NCA Standard of Advocacy. \nNote: This training will take place online over three days: June 10\, 17 and 24\, 2020. \nFirst Witness Advocacy bridges the gap between individual advocacy with one victim and system-based advocacy that creates change for many victims. This is in contrast to more restrictive advocacy models that are based on delivering services identified by practitioners. \nThrough hands-on practice\, participants will learn how to put advocacy principles into action\, including conducting a focus group to improve programming\, changing organizations and systems\, and creating programs and interventions that meet victims’ needs. \nParticipants will practice skills for effective crisis intervention and advocacy\, problem-solving\, and decision making around the toughest issues in advocacy work.

DESCRIPTION:Webinar Overview\nThe current COVID-19 crisis is not over yet; however\, in a short time we have seen how gaps in the system for language access are exacerbated by a pandemic. Did we know what to do in a crisis? Were we prepared to ensure that everyone had access to information and services in their first language? What do we do during an emergency or a disaster? How does our language access plan monitoring help us achieve a more organized response? What went wrong\, and how can we be sure that we do not make those mistakes again? \nThrough this virtual training we will share lessons learned and answer these and other questions regarding language access preparedness\, responsiveness and monitoring. Hosted by the National Resource Center for Reaching Victims. Register online. \nObjectives\n\nUnderstand the implications and impact of the COVID-19 crisis on Limited English Proficient communities and survivors;\nLearn about language access compliance and monitoring and how they can be our guide for language access emergency preparedness; and\nCreate a framework under which programs can create policies and protocols that facilitate access during a crisis.\n\nPresenter\nLeo Martinez\nProject Manager  at Casa de Esperanza\nLeo Martinez is a technical assistance lead for the National Resource Center for Reaching Victims and is responsible for leading the NRC’s work around survivors with Limited English Proficiency and immigrant survivors . He collaborates with other national partners to inform the framework\, advise the process\, organize some of the initiatives and activities and provide support to other stakeholders within the resource center. He provides training and technical assistance to coalitions\, organizations\, advocates and grassroots community activists conducting activities with victims of crime in underserved communities.
