SUMMARY:APSAC's 2023 Practice Guidelines on Forensic Interviewing of Children
DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nThe forensic interview is a critical tool for gathering information in child maltreatment cases.  This specialized and evolving skill requires on-going training and peer review. Child forensic interviews can be used in cases where a child may have been abused\, exploited\, neglected\, psychologically maltreated\, or witnessed a crime. It is investigative in nature and used to gather potential evidence about what a child may have experienced or witnessed as part of a larger investigation. The workshop will review what’s new and different in the 2023 APSAC Practice Guidelines on Forensic Interviewing of Children. While many forensic interviews involve children who have previously disclosed\, the recommendations contained in this workshop can be utilized in exploratory (e.g. at-risk\, precautionary\, screening) situations where there has not been previous disclosure. The guidelines presented are transferable in other contexts such as interviewing vulnerable adults. These interviews are evidence\, and as such\, the interview can be utilized in criminal child abuse proceedings\, civil child protection proceedings\, domestic proceedings\, and criminal activity witnessed by children. Information from the interviews may help identify other victims\, assist professionals responsible for assessing risk and safety needs of children and families\, and facilitate case management decisions. \nThe recently updated 2012 APSAC Practice Guidelines on Forensic Interviewing (2023) will be discussed to help participants to differentiate between current evidenced-based interview components and past practices. Updates and changes in practice will be highlighted and explained. The APSAC guidelines are aspirational and intended to encourage the highest level of interview proficiency and to offer direction for training child forensic interviewers. Participants will be able to recognize the necessary attributes of an interviewer\, interview training\, context and components of a trauma-informed child forensic interview. The purpose of a forensic interview is to elicit as much reliable information as possible from the child to inform the investigation and case planning. This workshop will guide Interviewers in the attempt to collect facts in a neutral\, supportive\, and objective manner consistent with the best interests of the child. \nThe goal is to provide a trauma-informed opportunity for a child to talk about their experiences while minimizing negative impact. At the core\, forensic interviews are non-leading\, non-suggestive\, non-blaming and non-shaming. Beyond understanding the importance of conducting developmentally\, culturally sensitive interviews\, establishing rapport\, and learning idiosyncratic differences in children’s use of language\, participants will gain an understanding of the evolution of forensic interview practice. Participants will also learn how barriers created by cultural differences can interfere with the ability to gain important information and often lead to misunderstandings and misinformed decision-making.  This workshop is only a brief overview to the updated 2023 APSAC Practice Guidelines on Forensic Interviewing of Children. SUMMARY:NCAC Forensic Interviewing of Children
DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nThe National Children’s Advocacy Center (NCAC) Forensic Interviewing of Children training is an internationally recognized\, research-informed and practice-informed intensive training. Participants will learn necessary skills to conduct a competent investigative interview of a child using the NCAC Child Forensic Interview (CFI) Structure. Participants will also be introduced to the evidence-based literature that supports the NCAC CFI Structure. \nThis interactive training is facilitated by practicing forensic interviewers who are well-versed in the current literature. The training includes lectures\, skill-building activities\, guided discussions\, reflections\, and an interview practicum in a supportive environment with assessment and feedback provided by experienced interviewers. A pre- and post-training knowledge check will be administered. \nTopics covered in this course include the following: \n\nNCAC Child Forensic Interview Structure\nDynamics of Abuse\nForensic Conversations\nChild Development\nMemory and Suggestibility\nPre-Interview Planning\nInclusive Forensic Interviewing\nInterview Practicum and Assessment\nTransition Strategies\nEffective Courtroom Testimony\n\nThis training is a four-day commitment. Participants are expected to complete six-hours of pre-work consisting of selected readings and interactive recorded exercises to be done at their own pace prior to the first official day of training. Trainings are conducted multiple times throughout the year either on-site in Huntsville\, AL\, or virtually. \nThis training has been updated to meet the 2023 National Children’s Alliance Standards for Accredited Children’s Advocacy Centers. \nRegister through NCAC\nRegister by September 23\, 2023\nThere is a 25% discount for registrants from Tribal CACs or developing countries. Please contact the training coordinator for additional information. \nCancellation Policy\nThe full registration fee is due by the fee deadline stated above in order to hold your spot. Registrants that have not paid in full by the deadline will be released from the training\, and we will contact those on the waitlist. \nIf you are unable to attend the training\, you must submit your cancellation notice at least 30 days prior to the training in order to be refunded the full amount\, less a $100 administrative fee. Your agency may choose to replace your spot in the training with another member of the agency at no penalty. SUMMARY:Positive Discipline in Everyday parenting
DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nThe American Professional Society on the Abuse of Children (APSAC) is presenting a training event on Positive Discipline in Everyday Parenting with Dr. Joan Durrant. \nIn order to prevent physical punishment\, we need to: 1) increase parents’ knowledge of child development; 2) help them manage their emotions; and 3) shift their lens from control to mentorship.  Positive Discipline in Everyday Parenting (PDEP)\, a 9-week not-for-profit program\, addresses each of these key factors.  Parents learn how children’s emotions and brains develop from infancy through adolescence; recognize their stress response and learn techniques to manage it; and acquire skills in scaffolding children’s learning while keeping them physically and emotionally safe.  Through interactive activities\, parents come to understand behavior from the child’s perspective so that they can effectively support children’s learning\, rather than punishing their mistakes. \nAbout Trainer\nA Developmental Psychologist\, Dr. Joan Durrant has recently retired from a 33-year academic career at the University of Manitoba.  She now focuses her time on the non-profit she founded to coordinate implementation of Positive Discipline in Everyday Parenting (PDEP) across Canada and in many other countries\, including Korea\, Mongolia\, and the United Arab Emirates.  Joan has dedicated her professional life to understanding why parents strike their children as punishment and how we can prevent it.  She created PDEP to address the psychological factors and cultural beliefs that underlie this ‘everyday violence’ against children. SUMMARY:Child Psychological Maltreatment: Identification to Intervention
DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nMinnesota Association for Children’s Mental Health (MACMH) is presenting a training opportunity with Marla R. Brassard\, PhD\, Professor Emerita\, Columbia University and Stuart N. Hart\, PhD\, Professor Emeritus\, Indiana University-Pursude University-Indianapolis. \nChild psychological maltreatment (CPM) is the most prevalent form of abuse and neglect\, produces the longest lasting and widest array of negative developmental consequences\, receives the least adequate societal intervention across all tiers\, and is given the least attention in the education and training of those responsible for ensuring the safety\, resilience and wellbeing of children. The forms of CPM (i.e.\, terrorizing\, spurning\, isolating\, corrupting/exploiting\, emotional unresponsiveness\, and medical/mental health/educational neglect) occur as stand-alone maltreatment and also in interaction with other maltreatment types in ways that represent the proverbial “keys in the dark\,” arguing that genuine progress will not be made in reducing any violence against children without consideration of CPM. \nThe workshop will cover four main topics\n\nWhat is child psychological maltreatment (CPM)\, why is it so bad\, and when does poor parenting cross the line into CPM? Presenters will use vignettes from real CAC and child welfare cases to illustrate the difference between CPM and poor parenting and then ask participants to make their own judgements on additional cases for group discussion.\nHow to effectively intervene in the moment when you observe poor parenting that might be CPM if sufficiently chronic or severe. Regardless of whether the observed parental behavior rises to a level of reportable maltreatment there are usually things a clinician can do to intervene in the moment. A qualitative study dealing with observed worrying caregiver behavior by mandated reporters will be explored to illuminate intervention options\, the nature of observer interventions and their implications. General principles of effective observer interventions will be presented. Then 3-4 cases will be presented for discussion by audience members in terms of what they might have done or typically do to address the types of situations presented in the moment and what they have found to be effective in practice.\nWhat are the features of effective prevention and interventions programs for CPM? This topic will be presented with participant discussion of existing programs in Minnesota that have these or related features. Among the considerations will be (a) a new CPM decision-making model for child protective services which includes definition\, caregiver act and harm standards\, and (b) interventions options for primary prevention as well as risk-group\, and maltreated populations.\nHow might CPM education be effectively implemented and integrated in Minnesota child services programs and sectors? Participants will be asked to formulate plans for initial and continuing CPM education within their professional sectors and systems of child/family services.\n\nLearning Objectives\n\nParticipants will be able to describe the different types of psychological maltreatment articulated in the Guidelines for the Psychosocial Evaluation of Suspected Psychological Maltreatment.\nParticipants will be able to generate and judge the applicability of a variety of possible approaches to intervention when they suspect or witness child psychological maltreatment.\nParticipants will be able to describe interventions for CPM in Minnesota applicable at levels of general population\, at-risk population and maltreated population.\nParticipants will be able to formulate plans for initial and continuing CPM education within their professional sectors and systems of child/family service\n\nPreparation\nThis program includes a 1 hour video overview on child psychological maltreatment for viewing by all participants at their convenience in the week(s) prior to a 4 hour in-person interactive workshop. \nAbout the Presenters\nMarla R. Brassard\, PhD\, is Professor Emerita in the School Psychology Program at Teachers College\, Columbia University. She is a licensed psychologist retired after 40 years as professor and director of clinical training in PhD and EDM programs in school psychology. Her current research is on a) interventions to improve professional skills in confronting poor parenting and PM in child welfare and early education settings\, b) changing social norms around parenting and CPM on the internet\, and c) discerning the unique effects of CPM relative to other forms of maltreatment. She is a fellow of the American Psychological Association & Past President of the Council of Directors of School Psychology Programs. She co-wrote the APSAC Guidelines for the Psychosocial Evaluation of Suspected Psychological Maltreatment. \nStuart N. Hart\, PhD\, is Principal of Strategic Initiatives for the International Institute for Child Rights and Development (IICRD)\, Victoria\, BC\, Canada\, an affiliate of Royal Roads University; Professor Emeritus\, School of Education\, Indiana University-Purdue University-Indianapolis; and Co-Founder and Executive Board member of the Psychological Maltreatment Alliance (www.psychologicalmaltreatment.org).  He is a licensed psychologist\, health provider status – Indiana\, and a Fellow of the American Psychological Association. He has worked in higher education\, public and private schools\, a children’s hospital\, a correctional institution\, government\, and private practice. He has been president of the International School Psychology Association\, National Association of School Psychologists (USA)\, National Committee for the Rights of the Child (USA)\, and the Indiana Psychological Association. He was a member of the NGO Advisory Committee for the UN Secretary-General’s Study on Violence Against Children\, co-chaired the drafting committee for the UN’s General Comment 13\, The Right of the Child to Freedom from all forms of Violence\, and has co-chaired multiple programs for the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child on advancing accountability to the children’s rights. He co-directed the NCCAN/HHS project to develop operational definitions of emotional abuse\, the first international conference (1983) and the global summit (2019) on psychological maltreatment. He is on the editorial board for Child Abuse and Neglect – The International Journal; was editor and contributor to the UNESCO publication\, “Eliminating corporal punishment: The way forward to constructive child discipline” (2005); and was an editor and contributor to the International Handbook on Child Rights and School Psychology (2020). He has conducted research\, presented\, and published extensively on psychological maltreatment of children and on children’s rights. SUMMARY:NCAC Critical Thinking in the Forensic Interview: Moving from Rote to Responsive Practice
DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nForensic interviewing (FI) is a highly complex\, interactive\, and challenging process requiring initial training\, practice-focused supervision\, and ongoing education. Effective interviewers must possess a broad repertoire of skills. Additionally\, forensic interviewers should be able to develop a critical thinking framework to meet both the needs of the child and the investigative team. This research-informed\, non-protocol-specific course will focus on essential skill development and strategies for effectively applying critical thinking tools. \nThis interactive training will utilize demonstration videos\, experiential activities\, lectures\, and guided reflection and discussion. Forensic interviewers are asked to bring case examples to be used to apply the principles being introduced. \nWho should attend? \nThis training is specifically designed for experienced interviewers responsible for initial forensic interviews of children working with a multidisciplinary team. It is recommended that the interviewer have at least two years of interviewing experience and have completed nationally-recognized FI training. \nRegister through NCAC\nRegister by September 8\, 2023.\nThe full registration fee is due by the fee deadline stated above in order to hold your spot. Registrants that have not paid in full by the deadline will be released from the training\, and we will contact those on the waitlist. \nIf you are unable to attend the training\, you must submit your cancellation notice at least 30 days prior to the training in order to be refunded the full amount\, less a $100 administrative fee. Your agency may choose to replace your spot in the training with another member of the agency at no penalty. Late cancellations may be considered for a training credit that may be used by your agency for up to one year. Failure to show up for the training forfeits the registration fee completely. \nA 25% discount is available for registrants from developing countries or from Tribal CACs. As the Training Division Manager\, he mentors new trainers\, consults with interviewers in the field\, and contributes to new workshop development. In 2001\, his policing career began\, and after completing twenty years of service\, Andy held the rank of Staff Sergeant at the Saanich Police Department\, Victoria\, BC. He is the recipient of multiple police commendations\, including the Meritorious Service Medal from the Provincial Lt. Governor. He has also held positions as a sessional instructor at Camosun College and an online instructor at the University of Manitoba. DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nA forensic interview of a preschool child brings unique challenges. Cognitive and linguistic abilities are newly emerging for children in this age group. While preschoolers may appear verbal and competent within their familiar everyday environment and conversations\, they have little to no experience providing personal autobiographical information to an unfamiliar adult in an unfamiliar setting. Separation from their caregiver can be unsettling for the very youngest children\, especially those with no prior daycare or preschool experience. \nGreater knowledge of developmental abilities and limitations\, as well as patience and willingness on the interviewer’s part to adapt language and limit expectations\, is required with this age group. Recommendations for adjusting language and questioning approaches and an adaptation of interview protocols will be provided. SUMMARY:Anger Control in Parents: Implications for Reducing the Use of Verbal and Physical Violence with their Children
DESCRIPTION:Training Over\nThe American Professional Society on the Abuse of Children (APSAC) is presenting this training opportunity with Dr. Don Meichenbaum\, a distinguished professor emeritus at the University of Waterloo\, Ontario Cananda. \nParents were asked to keep track of when they became angry with their children and to note when their anger escalated to their use of verbal and physical  forms of punishment. Cluster analysis indicated that there were eight categories of perceived provocations that can be summarized with the mnemonic II CE HOPE. This presentation will provide examples of each of these triggers and consider the implications for parent training. Repetitive non-compliance and the attribution of intentionality (“did it on purpose”) were key features contributing to the use of hitting behaviors. \nAbout Trainer\nDr. Don Meichenbaum is a distinguished professor emeritus from the University of Waterloo in  Ontario Canada  from which he took early retirement 25 years ago. Since that time he has been Research Director of the Melissa Institute for Violence Prevention in Miami (www.melissainstitute.org). He is one of the founders of Cognitive behavior therapy  and in a survey of clinician she was voted “One of the ten most influential psychotherapists of the 20th century.” He has received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Clinical Division of the American Psychological Association and  was Honorary President  of the Canadian Psychological Association. He has presented in all 50 U.S. states and internationally and he has published extensively. His latest book is entitled “Treating individuals with addictive disorders.” He has placed his book Roadmap to resilience on the Internet for FREE. In 2004\, John became Wisconsin’s first “Memphis Model” based CIT officer after attending the 40-hour course offered at the Akron Ohio Police Department. DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nThe National Children’s Advocacy Center (NCAC) Forensic Interviewing of Children training is an internationally recognized\, research-informed and practice-informed intensive training. Participants will learn necessary skills to conduct a competent investigative interview of a child using the NCAC Child Forensic Interview (CFI) Structure. Participants will also be introduced to the evidence-based literature that supports the NCAC CFI Structure. \nThis interactive training is facilitated by practicing forensic interviewers who are well-versed in the current literature. The training includes lectures\, skill-building activities\, guided discussions\, reflections\, and an interview practicum in a supportive environment with assessment and feedback provided by experienced interviewers. A pre- and post-training knowledge check will be administered. \nTopics covered in this course include the following:\n\nNCAC Child Forensic Interview Structure\nDynamics of Abuse\nForensic Conversations\nChild Development\nMemory and Suggestibility\nPre-Interview Planning\nInclusive Forensic Interviewing\nInterview Practicum and Assessment\nTransition Strategies\nEffective Courtroom Testimony\n\nThis training is a four-day commitment. Participants are expected to complete six-hours of pre-work consisting of selected readings and interactive recorded exercises to be done at their own pace prior to the first official day of training. Prior to joining Zero Abuse\, Caitie served as a Forensic Interviewer\, Forensic Program Coordinator\, Trainer\, and Multidisciplinary Team Facilitator with First Witness Child Advocacy Center in Duluth\, Minnesota. \nCaitie enjoys working with children\, and providing a trauma-friendly\, and legally defensible opportunity for victims of abuse to share their experience. In addition to his current assignment\, he serves as a technical adviser to his department’s hostage negotiations team and is the team leader for the sheriff’s underwater recovery team (S.U.R.T.). He is a P.O.S.T. certified Child Abuse Instructor and has received training in Advanced Investigation and Prosecution of Child Abuse and Exploitation through the National Advocacy Center. Since 2008 he has attended training in Modern Internet Communications and Cell phone investigations from the FBI and a number of the nation’s private vendors. Sextortion refers to the crime where someone employs an abuse of power\, usually a threat to expose explicit images\, in order to coerce a person to do something. This 1-day training will identify the methods and tactics used by offenders\, and describe why youth are vulnerable to these tactics. The training will explain the long-term impact of these crimes on victims\, offer a victim-centered response\, and provide information on reporting these crimes to law enforcement\, National Center for Missing and Exploited Children and the electronic service provider(s). This course will conclude with identifying effective Sextortion prevention messages for youth\, parents and educators. DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nNational Criminal Justice Training Center (NCJTC) of Fox Valley Technical College is hosting a training opportunity for professionals in law enforcement\, prosecution\, and related court officials with Detective Edward Merritt. \nLearn new strategies to assist in the prevention of child abuse. The strategies taught will focus on the five different forms of prevention that will give a holistic approach in moving forward with a plan for the prevention of child abuse. \nThese five forms are\n\nAfter the fact\nPersonal responsibility\nEnvironmental design\nPolicy development\nAddressing societal norms\n\nAbout Trainer\nSally Kimel-Sheppard\, Executive Director\, Envision Athens and NCJTC Associate. \nSally is a clinically licensed social worker\, working with survivors of child abuse and sexual assault through the Piedmont Judicial Circuit in Georgia. Her career began as a child therapist and forensic interviewer at The Tree House\, Children’s Advocacy Center. After working with over 1000 children while at The Tree House\, Sally became the Executive Director of The Cottage; a sexual assault center and children’s advocacy center in Athens\, Georgia. During her 15 years at The Cottage\, Sally developed programs and statewide standards for both sexual assault centers and children’s advocacy centers in Georgia. Sally also served at the Board of Directors Chairperson for the Children’s Advocacy Centers of Georgia. In 2022\, Sally joined Envision Athens\, where she works with governmental\, non-profit and other agencies to address issues affecting the quality of life in Athens\, Georgia.
