DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nThe American Professional Society on the Abuse of Children (APSAC) is presenting a training event with Ross W. Greene\, Ph. D. \nThis is the innovative\, evidence-based\, trauma-informed model Dr. Ross Greene describes in his influential books The Explosive Child\, Lost at School\, Lost & Found\, and Raising Human Beings. The model represents a significant departure from discipline-as-usual:  it focuses on solving problems rather than modifying behavior\, emphasizes collaborative rather than unilateral solutions\, encourages proactive rather than reactive intervention\, de-emphasizes diagnostic categories\, and provides practical\, research-based tools for assessment and intervention. \nAbout the Presenter\nRoss W. Greene\, Ph.D.\, is a clinical psychologist and the originator of the innovative\, evidence-based approach called Collaborative & Proactive Solutions (CPS)\, as described in his influential books The Explosive Child\, Lost at School\, Lost & Found\, and Raising Human Beings. He also developed\, and executive produced the award-winning documentary film The Kids We Lose\, released in 2018. Dr. Greene was on the faculty at Harvard Medical School for over 20 years\, and is now founding director of the non-profit Lives in the Balance. He is also currently adjunct Professor in the Department of Psychology at Virginia Tech and adjunct Professor in the Faculty of Science at the University of Technology in Sydney\, Australia. Dr. Greene has worked with several thousand kids with concerning behaviors and their caregivers\, and he and his colleagues have overseen implementation and evaluation of the CPS model in countless schools\, inpatient psychiatric units\, and residential and juvenile detention facilities\, with dramatic effect: significant reductions in recidivism\, discipline referrals\, detentions\, suspensions\, and use of restraint and seclusion. This training is intended for youth-serving social workers with an emphasis on clinical providers. \nAbout the Presenters\n \n\n\nEthan Hibbard is a Senior Family Advocate\, Forensic Interviewer\, and Marketing Coordinator from Voices for Children Advocacy Center in Flint\, MI. Ethan started as a volunteer and\, as a result of his service\, was hired to build the Victim Advocacy program for the center serving Genesee and Shiawassee Counties in Michigan. Alongside Sarah\, Ethan provides community training on Queer Youth Advocacy and Clinical Considerations for Transgender and Non-binary Youth. \n\n\n\n\n  \n  \n  \n Sarah Zyburtis the VP of Advocacy and Advancement at Voices for Children Advocacy Center. She is honored to support Ethan in providing community training on Queer Youth Advocacy\, and Clinical Considerations for Transgender and Non-binary Youth. When not having honest and open conversations about supporting Queeryouth\, Sarah also oversees prevention education\, advocacy\, the Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA)Program\, the Family Resource Center\, and events at Voices for Children. SUMMARY:Strategies for Interviewing a Reluctant Child Witness
DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nThe National Children’s Advocacy Center (NCAC) is presenting a training event on strategies to interview reluctant children. \nForensic interviewers encounter a variety of forms of reluctance in child witnesses. A forensic interview is challenging for many children as the environment and forensic interviewer are unfamiliar\, and the topic of discussion can be cognitively and emotionally demanding for the child. There is no single manifestation of reluctance in children and no single antidote. The degree of reluctance occurs along a continuum ranging from mild anxiety to more pronounced resistance and high-stress levels for the child. Additionally\, reluctance appears at different places in the interview process\, and child witnesses communicate their reluctance in their own unique and personal way. \nThis training will explore the internal and external contributors to children’s reluctance and offer a “toolbox” of supportive responses and adaptations that may be helpful.  Case examples and demonstrations through recorded interviews will be used during the training. DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nZero Abuse Project is hosting this training event where participants will learn tools and practical skills to better communicate with a child during the initial outcry of maltreatment. \nProtecting children from child abuse and maltreatment requires that everyone understand how to recognize\, respond and report any form of maltreatment a child may experience. FIRST response is often the single most important step in effectively responding and reporting maltreatment. \nFIRST will give you and your community the tools necessary to better protect kids. This half-day training goes beyond recognizing types of maltreatment. SUMMARY:Increasing Skill in Forensic Interviewing of Children
DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nThe National Children’s Advocacy Center (NCAC) is presenting a virtual training center on conducting effective forensic interview of children. \nConducting an effective forensic interview (FI) of a child is a complex task that requires an understanding of children’s memory\, linguistic\, communicative\, and metacognitive capacities. It also includes the use of appropriate questioning strategies which maximize a child’s recall memory. These concepts are introduced and practiced during initial forensic interview training. \nFaced with diverse children and complicated cases\, interviewers often need help implementing the lessons learned in basic forensic interview training in a nuanced and thoughtful manner. Mastering the use of appropriate questioning strategies and legally defensible social support requires additional training beyond an initial one-week class. \nThis course deepens interviewers’ understanding of effective questioning strategies\, the provision of sensitive and targeted social support and provides extended opportunities to practice the implementation of skills and receive timely feedback. SUMMARY:NCAC Components for Enhancing Career Experience and Reducing Trauma
DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nCompassion Fatigue. Burnout. Vicarious Trauma. Secondary Trauma. Terms that overlap and yet are somewhat different. However\, all these concepts have one thing in common – they describe the emotional toll exacted upon workers in the human services who deal intensively and empathically with children and adults who are in engaged in an emotional personal struggle. It is a privilege to work in a profession in which caring about those who suffer is the main tool of our work. But caring also takes a toll. Being close to ground zero when people struggle affects the emotional life of those of us who care. \nComponents for Enhancing Career Experience and Reducing Trauma\, or CE-CERT\, is a suite of skills designed to support well-being in professionals who are exposed to secondary trauma. The goal of CE-CERT is not merely to help professionals survive this work. Rather\, the goal is to support professionals to have a vocation that is uniquely and deeply satisfying. CE-CERT goes beyond the usual discussion of secondary traumatic stress and burnout to provide specific\, practical skills that can be applied to the very real stress that is produced by this work. \nCE-CERT training is designed for professionals and supervisors who work in child abuse and neglect\, such as those at Children’s Advocacy Centers\, members of multidisciplinary teams\, and their partners. CE-CERT training is provided in two parts: \n\nPart 1 – Foundations in CE-CERT is a two-day foundational training in the principles and skills of CE-CERT and is intended for all professionals working in child abuse and neglect.\nPart 2 – CE-CERT for Supervisors is a one-day training specifically for supervisors of child maltreatment professionals. Supervisors will learn how to incorporate CE-CERT into their supervision model with staff. In addition to the one-day training\, supervisors are invited and strongly encouraged to participate in 10 one-hour consultation calls scheduled once or twice a month with the CE-CERT trainer. Supervisors who want to participate in Part 2 must have attended the Part 1 training.\n\nRegister via NCAC\nThere is no cost to attend this training. DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nFirst Witness is pleased to offer Safe and Strong Child© Train the Presenter to CACs and other organizations interested in implementing a child abuse prevention education program in their communities. \nThis training will prepare presenters to share Safe and Strong Child© sessions with students\, caregivers\, and teachers and bring the curriculum to their local community; each person planning on presenting the information needs to take this Train the Presenter course. This course is not a train-the-trainer course\, and does not prepare you to train other presenters at your organization. \nSafe and Strong Child© (SSC©) body safety curriculum is aligned with evidence-informed best practices for child sexual abuse prevention. SSC© consists of developmentally appropriate classroom lessons that are taught interactively through stories\, role play\, and song in a non-threatening environment. SUMMARY:Zero Abuse Project Serving LGBTQIA+ Children and Families in the Child Abuse MDT Process
DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nThis course will provide an overview of affirmative practices for all multidisciplinary team (MDT) professionals supporting and serving LGBTQIA+ children\, youth and families when responding to child abuse and maltreatment. In addition to providing an overview of gender and sexuality terminology\, some of the topics covered will include cultural considerations when working with LGBQTIA+ children\, youth and families\, working with caregivers that are not supportive of LGBTQIA+ youth\, preparing the team\, family and child for the process\, allyship\, pronouns\, engaging community partners\, vetting resources for LGBQTIA+ families\, considerations for the forensic protocol and the use of interview aids. While considerations for the forensic interview will be discussed in this course\, the primary focus of this training is on the MDT\, as a whole. \nThis training is appropriate for law enforcement\, prosecuting attorneys\, child protection workers\, forensic interviewers\, mental health professionals\, medical providers\, advocates\, community liaisons\, and youth serving professionals that may interact with LGBTQIA+ children and youth. \nThis event will be held virtually via Zoom. This training examines minority stress and resilience factors\, the critical role of family acceptance\, and ways Child Advocacy Centers and MDT Partners can create safe and inclusive spaces for queer youth. \nAbout the Presenters\n \nEthan Hibbard is a Senior Family Advocate\, Forensic Interviewer\, and Marketing Coordinator from Voices for Children Advocacy Center in Flint\, MI. Ethan started as a volunteer and\, as a result of his service\, was hired to build the Victim Advocacy program for the center serving Genesee and Shiawassee Counties in Michigan. Alongside Sarah\, Ethan provides community training on Queer Youth Advocacy and Clinical Considerations for Transgender and Non-binary Youth. \n  \n  \n  \n \nSarah Zyburtis the VP of Advocacy and Advancement at Voices for Children Advocacy Center. She is honored to support Ethan in providing community training on Queer Youth Advocacy\, and Clinical Considerations for Transgender and Non-binary Youth. DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nMinnesota Association for Children’s Mental Health (MACMH) will present a live webinar with Tiffany Grant\, Business Development Manager\, Trainer\, and Coach at First Children’s Finance. During this presentation\, participants will learn to define stages of social-emotional development and how to support children through each stage. The presenter will explore ways to foster healing by focusing on each child’s needs and examining how to support families by exploring resources that help families support children at home. This training is intended for early childhood professionals\, family members\, and social services professionals. \nThree Learning Objectives\n\nParticipants will be able to recognize and identify Social Emotional Development and how to foster healing.\nParticipants will learn Social Emotional Strategies that help children with self-regulation.\nParticipants will gain access to a field of resources on fostering healing with children and families.\n\nAbout the Presenter\nTiffany Grant is currently working to fortify the ECE business model as a Business Development Manager at First Children’s Finance. As a continuing advocate for equity and inclusion\, she helped establish a peer networking resource group for entrepreneurs of color called Community Conversations for Early Childhood Entrepreneurs. Tiffany’s expertise lies in bridging the gaps between childcare business\, advocacy\, and equity where she has sought to help BOPIC business owners navigate the structural and systemic barriers they encounter every day. Tiffany has a talent for identifying areas of the Early Childhood Field where discrepancies exist and has worked to specifically target those areas of need. Her work in coaching and training\, as well as in compliance and curriculum development has helped to highlight these needs. Knowing the importance of continuing education\, Tiffany also works as a trainer in the subjects of early childhood trauma\, African American Language. Additional examples of meaningful contributions to the field include co-founding an ECE branch within the Excell Academy for Higher Learning charter school. DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nThe March 2023 Fundamentals in Victim Services 201 Training is a virtual training for experienced victim advocates to expand and deepen their core knowledge and skills in providing victim-centered services. This training is designed for victim advocates who have been in the field for 5+ years. By the end of this training\, advocates will be able to: \n\nUnderstand the neurobiology of trauma in victimization and develop skills for providing trauma-responsive advocacy to all victims of crime.\nExpand their understanding of vicarious trauma and strategies to build resilience to sustain their career in victim services.\nUnderstand and examine their own Occupational Identity (OI) and identify strategies for cultivating healthy boundaries; and\nDescribe the reparations process and have a detailed understanding of the current statutes regarding reparations\nRecognize and interrogate the roles of bias\, privilege\, and oppression in their daily work\nUnderstand the ways in which evaluation and grant reporting can be effective and culturally responsive\nFurthermore\, training participants will have opportunities to connect with one another and with experienced professionals with a range of knowledge and skills.\n\nExpectations for the Virtual Format\nFundamentals in Victim Services 201 will feature interactive modules to appeal to different styles of learning\, with a combination of lecture\, small group work in breakout sessions\, and opportunities for individual reflection. The number of attendees will be limited to 30 to maximize the quality of interaction. \nModules will take place live via Zoom. Attendees will be expected to actively participate\, using the chat to engage with presenters and other participants\, and turning on cameras and unmuting during large group discussions and breakout sessions. \nMAC will award a certificate of completion to attendees who complete all the modules. Participants are expected to complete all sessions live. If you cannot attend a live session\, you must email us at training@mnallianceoncrime.org in advance to request an excused absence. Sessions may not be recorded. \nWe will apply for Continuing Legal Education (for attorneys) and Peace Officers Standings and Training (for law enforcement) credits by request. DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nMinnesota Association for Children’s Mental Health (MACMH) is presenting a live webinar with Alyssa Madon\, Occupational Therapist at the M Health Fairview. This presentation is an introduction to sensory processing and its relationship with children that have experienced trauma. It will cover pertinent definitions and evidence-based connections to the outward responses (i.e. behaviors\, emotional difficulties\, etc) that are often seen in children that are having difficulty with sensory processing. The training will provide examples to increase comprehension and demonstrate appropriate strategies for immediate use in working with children. \nFour Learning Objectives:\n\nAttendees will be able to define basic sensory processing-related terminology\nAttendees will be able to identify the relationship between sensory processing and children who have experienced trauma.\nAttendees will be able to recognize the signs of sensory dysregulation in children who have experienced trauma.\nAttendees will be able to implement at least 5 sensory-based strategies to increase sensory regulation.\n\nAbout the Presenter\nAlyssa Mason is a pediatric occupational therapist. She received her undergraduate degree in Human Development and Family Studies with a focus on child development and a master’s degree in occupational therapy with certificates in equity and diversity\, and disability and policy. Alyssa has experience working as an early childhood educator\, and a Children’s Mental Health Targeted Case Manager before starting work as a pediatric occupational therapist across multiple settings including schools\, inpatient hospitals and outpatient clinics. This 3-day\, five separate track\, hybrid experience\, brings you nationally renowned experts in the field of child abuse\, and is purposefully planned for multidisciplinary members and their specific discipline. View the brochure here. \nBoth in-person and virtual experiences are offered. Limited sessions will be available for participants to access after the conference for 30 days. SUMMARY:Ethical Awareness in Reflective Consultation
DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nMinnesota Association for Children’s Mental Health (MACMH) is hosting a training presented by Carol F. Siegel\, PhD\, LP\, clinical psychologist and instructor at the University of Minnesota. Reflective consultation is an enormous responsibility. In order to serve our consultees well\, it requires awareness on multiple levels\, including content\, meaning\, cultural factors and ethics.  This presentation will focus on ethics and ethical awareness issues in reflective consultation. It will include an opportunity to use a format by which to process ethical issues. The intended audience is for anyone doing reflective consultation. \nLearning Objectives\n\nParticipants will understand the significance of the role of ethics in culturally-informed reflective consultation.\nParticipants will identify three areas of concern regarding ethics in reflective consultation.\nParticipants will become familiar with a process to address ethical concerns.\n\nAbout the Presenter\n \nCarol F. Siegel\, PhD\, LP is a licensed clinical psychologist in Minneapolis who sees parents and children in her private practice. Her primary clinical focus is parenting and issues encountered by parents with complex histories. This may include depression\, stress\, adoption\, foster care\, trauma\, abuse or neglect. Dr. Siegel is a consultant to clinical and home-visiting programs around Minnesota and has been teaching in the Infant and Early Childhood Mental Health Master’s and Certificate Program at the University of Minnesota since 2007.
