DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nMinnesota Association for Children’s Mental Health (MACMH) is presenting a live webinar with Alyssa Madon\, Occupational Therapist at the M Health Fairview. This presentation is an introduction to sensory processing and its relationship with children that have experienced trauma. It will cover pertinent definitions and evidence-based connections to the outward responses (i.e. behaviors\, emotional difficulties\, etc) that are often seen in children that are having difficulty with sensory processing. The training will provide examples to increase comprehension and demonstrate appropriate strategies for immediate use in working with children. \nFour Learning Objectives:\n\nAttendees will be able to define basic sensory processing-related terminology\nAttendees will be able to identify the relationship between sensory processing and children who have experienced trauma.\nAttendees will be able to recognize the signs of sensory dysregulation in children who have experienced trauma.\nAttendees will be able to implement at least 5 sensory-based strategies to increase sensory regulation.\n\nAbout the Presenter\nAlyssa Mason is a pediatric occupational therapist. She received her undergraduate degree in Human Development and Family Studies with a focus on child development and a master’s degree in occupational therapy with certificates in equity and diversity\, and disability and policy. Alyssa has experience working as an early childhood educator\, and a Children’s Mental Health Targeted Case Manager before starting work as a pediatric occupational therapist across multiple settings including schools\, inpatient hospitals and outpatient clinics. Siegel\, PhD\, LP\, clinical psychologist and instructor at the University of Minnesota. Reflective consultation is an enormous responsibility. In order to serve our consultees well\, it requires awareness on multiple levels\, including content\, meaning\, cultural factors and ethics.  This presentation will focus on ethics and ethical awareness issues in reflective consultation. It will include an opportunity to use a format by which to process ethical issues. The intended audience is for anyone doing reflective consultation. \nLearning Objectives\n\nParticipants will understand the significance of the role of ethics in culturally-informed reflective consultation.\nParticipants will identify three areas of concern regarding ethics in reflective consultation.\nParticipants will become familiar with a process to address ethical concerns.\n\nAbout the Presenter\n \nCarol F. Siegel\, PhD\, LP is a licensed clinical psychologist in Minneapolis who sees parents and children in her private practice. Her primary clinical focus is parenting and issues encountered by parents with complex histories. This may include depression\, stress\, adoption\, foster care\, trauma\, abuse or neglect. Dr. Siegel is a consultant to clinical and home-visiting programs around Minnesota and has been teaching in the Infant and Early Childhood Mental Health Master’s and Certificate Program at the University of Minnesota since 2007. SUMMARY:NCAC Getting the Best Information from a Narrative Child Witness
DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nResearch in child maltreatment\, memory\, suggestibility\, and child development has led to a consensus regarding the guidelines to be followed when conducting a forensic interview. Interviewers know how to adapt their approach to the child in the room and formulate questions adapted to a child’s level of language acquisition and cognitive development. \nWhile there are numerous challenges when interviewing reluctant children\, there are also challenges that must be addressed and managed when interviewing highly narrative children. The appropriate use of invitations\, breadth and depth questions\, specific wh-questions\, and yes/no questions by interviewers can provide a framework for understanding and moving through a child’s narration. In addition\, many children may have experienced multiple events of maltreatment which often results in the blending of details across incidents. Active listening and utilizing provided cues and leads can provide investigators with a greater understanding of the child’s lived experiences and assist with the details required during a civil or criminal investigation. \nParticipants will have an opportunity to increase skills in implementing best practice narrative questioning strategies with highly narrative children while also learning to elicit and manage the flow of information needed by the investigative team. This training is only offered virtually. \nWho Should Attend\nThis training is appropriate for forensic interviewers who have completed a nationally recognized forensic interview training and want to increase their ability to obtain information from children that reflect evidence-based\, best-practice questioning of child witnesses. \nTrainer: Andra Chamberlin\, MA \nRegister via NCAC\nRegister by January 27\, 2023\nA 25% discount is available for registrants from developing countries or from Tribal CACs. DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\n\n\nDr. Mark Hudson raises awareness of medical evaluations and findings associated with child maltreatment\, primarily physical abuse. Dr. Hudson will provide an overview of skin\, bone\, and head injuries that are most concerning for physical abuse\, including basic anatomy and psychiatry. Additionally\, he will discuss the importance of considering a child’s developmental abilities and review literature related to shortfalls in children. The target audiences for this training include non-medical professionals who have frequent contact with children or participate in child abuse investigations\, evaluations\, or legal proceedings related to maltreatment concerns. \n\nAbout the Presenter\n\n\nMark Hudson\, MD\, received his Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Minnesota and completed a Pediatrics residency at the University of Minnesota. Following residency\, he completed a Child Abuse Fellowship and is Board Certified in Child Abuse Pediatrics. Dr. Hudson is a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics and a member of the Ray Helfer Society. He is the Medical Director of Midwest Children’s Resource Center\, a medically based Child Advocacy Center at Children’s Minnesota. He is the Executive Director of the Midwest Regional Child Advocacy Center. \n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Midwest Children’s Resource Center and Midwest Regional Children’s Advocacy Center\nThe Midwest Children’s Resource Center (MCRC) is an accredited child advocacy center by the National Children’s Alliance and a clinic with Children’s Minnesota that offers medical evaluation and case management in alleged child abuse cases\, serious neglect\, and witness to violence. \nRegistration – $10\nWe are excited to host this training for this month. DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nThis training teaches the CornerHouse Forensic Interview Protocol™ a credible\, reliable\, developmentally flexible and non-traumatic forensic interview protocol appropriate for children\, adolescents and vulnerable adults involved in a sexual abuse investigation. \nTraining methods include lecture and discussion\, review of CornerHouse video-recorded interviews\, skill-building exercises\, and an interview practicum. These courses are designed for teams of forensic interviewers\, child protection workers\, tribal social service investigators\, law enforcement officers and prosecuting attorneys. Participants are encouraged to attend as a multidisciplinary team. Courses are outcome-based and include an exam upon completion. \nCost: $1\,275.00\nRegister online via CornerHouse \nThis training is taking place in person in Roseville\, MN. \nEach day training will take place from 8:00 a.m. –4:30 p.m. Central Time. DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nThis training is presented by National Children’s Advocacy Center.  \nA forensic interview of a preschool child brings unique challenges. Cognitive and linguistic abilities are newly emerging for children in this age group. While preschoolers may appear verbal and competent within their familiar everyday environment and conversations\, they have little to no experience providing personal autobiographical information to an unfamiliar adult in an unfamiliar setting. Separation from their caregiver can be unsettling for the very youngest children\, especially those with no prior daycare or preschool experience.  \nGreater knowledge of developmental abilities and limitations\, as well as patience and willingness on the interviewer’s part to adapt language and limit expectations\, is required with this age group.  \nRecommendations for adjusting language and questioning approaches will be provided\, as well as an adaptation of interview protocols. Demonstration interviews will be used throughout the training.  \nWho should attend this training? \nThis training is appropriate for forensic interviewers at all levels who want to increase their ability to interview preschool children in a developmentally sensitive and planned way. SUMMARY:Growing Beyond ACEs - A Framework for all to Reach Optimum Wellbeing
DESCRIPTION:Training Summary\n\n\nThis training will explore the link between historical\, intergenerational\, and current trauma-related issues in our communities. Participants will understand the connection between trauma\, Mental Health\, and contemporary challenges in social justice. We will explore NEAR science (Neurobiology\, Epigenetics\, ACEs\, & Resilience) and cultural intelligence as essential growth factors. We will explore our experiences\, perceptions\, beliefs\, and behaviors that may challenge constructive relationship development. We will discuss practical\, culturally Intelligent\, trauma-responsive strategies to keep our work moving forward within our society. \nLearning Objectives\n\nThe participants will learn how to modify their position to understand individuals and their adaptive response(s) to environmental circumstances and toxic stress.\nThe participants will recognize the potential risk factors and warning signs of various mental health challenges common among individuals\, including depression\, anxiety\, disruptive behavioral disorders\, and substance use disorders.\nThe participants will interpret the prevalence of various mental health disorders in the U.S. and the need to reduce negative attitudes in their communities.\nThe participants will identify methods practitioners\, providers\, mediators\, parents\, and caregivers can use to build meaningful connections with community members.\n\n\n\nAbout the Presenter\n \nBrandon is the Minnesota Association for Children’s Mental Health Executive Director & consultant. He specializes in Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs)\, Historical and Intergenerational trauma\, Social/Emotional Intelligence (EQ)\, Leadership\, and Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI). Brandon holds a B.A. in Sociology from the University of Minnesota\, a Masters in Community Psychology from Metropolitan State University\, and a Masters in Psychotherapy (MFT) from Adler Graduate School. Brandon is also a 2013 Bush Foundation Leadership Fellow. He lives by the motto of “Live life with Purpose on Purpose.” \n\n\nAbout the Minnesota Association for Children’s Mental Health\nThe Minnesota Association for Children’s Mental Health (MACMH)\, provides education and resources to professionals\, families and youth throughout Minnesota and beyond. SUMMARY:Zero Abuse Project: Considering Grooming and Manipulation in the Forensic Interview
DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nGrooming behaviors are estimated to be present in nearly half of all child sexual abuse cases. It is important for child abuse professionals to recognize manipulative patterns and behaviors that offenders employ to groom their victims for compliance with abuse and non-disclosure\, so interventions can be made as early as possible.
