SUMMARY:IVAT How Does Trafficking Happen and How to Respond? Grooming\, Trauma Bonding\, and Trauma-Informed Care
DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nThis training explains how individuals are recruited or groomed into trafficking situations\, and debunks common myths – including that trafficking involves kidnapping and forcible confinement. We will take a deep dive into the “Romeo” or “boyfriend” trafficking strategy. A framework involving 6 stages of grooming into trafficking is introduced\, which leads into a discussion of trauma-informed strategies for interacting with suspected or confirmed trafficking victims. The presentation introduces a number of myths related to human trafficking\, replacing them with facts\, with the final myth being that victims will self-disclose their exploitation. There are many reasons why victims do not self-disclose\, and we must be sensitive to these dynamics. At the end of the training\, participants will be able to identify stages of grooming\, differentiate strategies of trauma-informed care\, and explain trauma bonding. \nRegister through IVAT\n

SUMMARY:Justice Clearinghouse | When Trauma Meets the Courtroom: A Call for Compassionate Justice for Children and Families
DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nIn this webinar\, national consultants and trauma expert Becky Haas will explore what trauma is\, how to identify it\, and why the Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) study remains so significant today. \nShe’ll discuss the widespread impact of trauma on justice-involved individuals and their families—and how creating safe\, compassionate environments can help prevent re-traumatization\, which is essential for healing and recovery. \nJustice and child-welfare professionals who understand the connection between trauma and substance use disorders are better equipped to provide interventions that support long-term stability—not just for adults\, but also for the children whose lives are shaped by their caregivers’ justice involvement. \nBecause justice shouldn’t compound harm—it should work toward true rehabilitation and healing. \nRegister Through Justice Clearinghouse\n

SUMMARY:First Witness Training for Advocates Working with a CAC
DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nThis training meets all essential training components in the 2023 National Children’s Alliance (NCA) Standard of Victim Advocacy and has been approved by the NCA. \nFirst Witness Child Advocacy Center’s advocacy program bridges the gap between individual advocacy with one victim and system-based advocacy that creates change for many victims. This contrasts with more restrictive advocacy models that are based on delivering services identified by practitioners and systems rather than victims. \nThrough hands-on practice\, participants will learn how to put advocacy principles into action\, including: \n\nExamining advocacy principles through the lens of their organization\nChanging organizations and systems\, and\nCreating programs and interventions that meet victims’ needs.\n\nParticipants will practice skills for effective crisis intervention and advocacy\, problem-solving\, and decision-making around the toughest issues in advocacy work. \nRegister Through First Witness\n

SUMMARY:Justice Clearinghouse | Trauma Informed Debriefs: Seeking Support Without Sliming
DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nTalking with trusted others about the disturbing things we’ve seen\, heard\, and experienced on the job can be an important way to process trauma. But when these conversations happen ad hoc—often through graphic “gory story” sharing—they can unintentionally spread vicarious trauma. This “trauma contagion” effect can undermine morale\, drain productivity\, and contribute to burnout\, absenteeism\, and turnover. \nThat’s why it’s essential to approach informal debriefing in a safe\, trauma-informed way. \nThis webinar explores the purpose and power of informal debriefing conversations and offers a simple\, four-step process that anyone can use to talk about the realities of the job without causing additional harm to themselves or others. You’ll learn key trauma-informed principles and how to apply them in daily interactions that support connection\, recovery\, and resilience. \nRegister Through Justice Clearinghouse\n

SUMMARY:APSAC | Practical Science: New Research from Child Maltreatment
DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nJoin APSAC for our upcoming “Practical Science” session\, exploring critical new research in the field of child maltreatment. This session will center on the recently published article\, “Characteristics of Child Sexual Abuse Material in Peer-to-Peer Networks and Predictors of its Severity: Insights From Filenames.“ \nThe Internet has empowered millions of perpetrators who create and consume child sexual abuse material (CSAM)\, the current term replacing child pornography. In this study\, we coded data from a random sample of 2980 filenames from files shared in peer-to-peer (P2P) networks from U.S. IP addresses in 2021. Most filenames referenced girls and just under half referenced children aged 5 to 12. A wide variety of child races\, ethnicities and nationalities were referenced. Over half of filenames described a sexually abusive act\, most of which referenced penetration. The abuse referenced was more severe when filenames referenced children under the age of 13\, both girls and boys\, incest\, and/or children or youth of color. The findings underline the harm to children from CSAM\, suggest the value of a racial justice perspective on CSAM\, and support the need to search for CSAM as part of contact child sexual abuse investigations. \nRegister Through APSAC

SUMMARY:First Witness | What Children Remember: The Science of Memory and the Art of Asking Questions
DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nThis training examines how children remember and recall experiences\, with a focus on applying research to investigative interviews with children. Participants will learn how factors like age\, development\, trauma\, and cognitive ability influence memory\, and how memory can be both reliable and vulnerable to suggestion. We’ll explore common misconceptions\, the effects of stress\, and the critical role that questioning plays. Research shows that poorly worded or leading questions can distort a child’s memory\, while open-ended\, trauma-informed approaches help elicit accurate and detailed accounts. This training is ideal for professionals in child protection\, forensic interviewing\, law enforcement\, and mental health who want to better understand and support how children recall and share their experiences. \nRegister Through First Witness
