SUMMARY:Increasing Skill in Forensic Interviewing of Children
DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nNational Children’s Advocacy Center (NCAC) is presenting a training opportunity on Increasing Skill in Forensic Interviewing of Children with Andra Chamberlin\, MA. \nConducting an effective forensic interview (FI) of a child is a complex task that requires an understanding of children’s memory\, linguistic\, communicative\, and metacognitive capacities. It also includes the use of appropriate questioning strategies which maximize a child’s recall memory. These concepts are introduced and practiced during initial forensic interview training. \nFaced with diverse children and complicated cases\, interviewers often need help implementing the lessons learned in basic forensic interview training in a nuanced and thoughtful manner. Mastering the use of appropriate questioning strategies and legally defensible social support requires additional training beyond an initial one-week class. \nThis course deepens interviewers’ understanding of effective questioning strategies\, the provision of sensitive and targeted social support and provides extended opportunities to practice the implementation of skills and receive timely feedback. Participants will also receive specific preparation in interview evaluation. \nThis virtual\, non-protocol-specific\, foundational skill-building training consists of experiential components\, readings\, web-based modules\, and interview exercises. \nWho should attend?\nThis training is recommended as the first follow-up training for newer interviewers\, as well as for interviewers who would like to refresh and update their skills. Completion of nationally recognized forensic interviewing training is required. \nRegister via NCAC\nRegister by May 26\, 2023 \nA 25% discount is available for registrants from developing countries or from Tribal CACs. Please contact the training coordinator for additional information. Please note: To pay via international wire transfer\, payment must be made in U.S. dollars at your expense. Banking and account information is provided on request. \nImportant Note: Training classes are subject to cancellation in the event of insufficient registrations. SUMMARY:The Shift From Control to Connection: Parental Mediation Strategies That Support Digital Wellbeing
DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nThe Minnesota Association for Children’s Mental Health (MACMH) is hosting a training presented by Erin Walsh\, CO-Founder at Spark & Stitch Institute. \nWhile dominant media narratives paint a simple equation that teens + screens = negative outcomes\, the latest data point to a much more complicated picture. Unfortunately\, this simplistic messaging too often positions parents simply as “on-off” regulators of adolescent media use and can lead to restrictive mediation strategies that backfire as children grow older. The nuances in the relationship between screen time and mental health require that helping professionals\, caring adults and caregivers increase their knowledge of these issues and build a mediation toolkit that responds to the developmental needs of adolescents as well as the complexity of the digital world that young people are growing up in. \nThis workshop will briefly review some of the key takeaways in the research about screen time and mental health and explore why restrictive mediation strategies alone are insufficient to reduce harm and strengthen resilience. Participants will be asked to connect the dots between the developmental tasks of adolescents and the digital dilemmas and opportunities they navigate daily. Time will be spent reviewing additional effective mediation strategies that center adult-child connections\, communication and compassion. Reflection prompts and Q&A will help participants make meaning of their learning. \nThis training is for everyone from all professions and will address early childhood to adolescence age. \nLearning Objectives\n\nReview key research takeaways on the relationship between screen time and adolescent mental health and wellbeing.\nExplain parental mediation strategies and their impact on exposure to risk and adolescent risk behaviors.\nIdentify strategies associated with successful parental/adult mediation that are developmentally appropriate for tweens and teens.\n\nAbout the Presenter\nErin Walsh is a parent\, speaker\, educator and writer. She has worked with communities across the country who want to better understand child and adolescent development and cut through conflicting information about kids and technology. Erin and her father\, Dr. David Walsh\, started together at the National Institute on Media and the Family before creating Spark & Stitch Institute in 2019. In addition to writing articles for several organizations including Bolster Collaborative and Psychology Today\, she co-authored the 10th Anniversary Edition of the national bestseller Why Do They Act That Way? A Survival Guide to the Adolescent Brain for You and Your Teen. Her signature down-to-earth approach and sense of humor helps families and educators engage in complicated topics and leave feeling capable and motivated. D. \nThis is the innovative\, evidence-based\, trauma-informed model Dr. Ross Greene describes in his influential books The Explosive Child\, Lost at School\, Lost & Found\, and Raising Human Beings. The model represents a significant departure from discipline-as-usual:  it focuses on solving problems rather than modifying behavior\, emphasizes collaborative rather than unilateral solutions\, encourages proactive rather than reactive intervention\, de-emphasizes diagnostic categories\, and provides practical\, research-based tools for assessment and intervention. \nAbout the Presenter\nRoss W. Greene\, Ph.D.\, is a clinical psychologist and the originator of the innovative\, evidence-based approach called Collaborative & Proactive Solutions (CPS)\, as described in his influential books The Explosive Child\, Lost at School\, Lost & Found\, and Raising Human Beings. He also developed\, and executive produced the award-winning documentary film The Kids We Lose\, released in 2018. Dr. Greene was on the faculty at Harvard Medical School for over 20 years\, and is now founding director of the non-profit Lives in the Balance. He is also currently adjunct Professor in the Department of Psychology at Virginia Tech and adjunct Professor in the Faculty of Science at the University of Technology in Sydney\, Australia. Dr. Greene has worked with several thousand kids with concerning behaviors and their caregivers\, and he and his colleagues have overseen implementation and evaluation of the CPS model in countless schools\, inpatient psychiatric units\, and residential and juvenile detention facilities\, with dramatic effect: significant reductions in recidivism\, discipline referrals\, detentions\, suspensions\, and use of restraint and seclusion. DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nThe National Children’s Advocacy Center (NCAC) is presenting a virtual training center on conducting effective forensic interview of children. \nConducting an effective forensic interview (FI) of a child is a complex task that requires an understanding of children’s memory\, linguistic\, communicative\, and metacognitive capacities. It also includes the use of appropriate questioning strategies which maximize a child’s recall memory. These concepts are introduced and practiced during initial forensic interview training. \nFaced with diverse children and complicated cases\, interviewers often need help implementing the lessons learned in basic forensic interview training in a nuanced and thoughtful manner. Mastering the use of appropriate questioning strategies and legally defensible social support requires additional training beyond an initial one-week class. \nThis course deepens interviewers’ understanding of effective questioning strategies\, the provision of sensitive and targeted social support and provides extended opportunities to practice the implementation of skills and receive timely feedback. Many professionals are working tirelessly to shift the behavioral paradigm away from the traditional behavioral approach and toward what current relational and neuroscience research has taught us. Let’s use that information to redesign tools we frequently use in schools and community settings today – functional behavioral assessments and positive behavioral intervention plans. SUMMARY:Zero Abuse Project Serving LGBTQIA+ Children and Families in the Child Abuse MDT Process
DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nThis course will provide an overview of affirmative practices for all multidisciplinary team (MDT) professionals supporting and serving LGBTQIA+ children\, youth and families when responding to child abuse and maltreatment. In addition to providing an overview of gender and sexuality terminology\, some of the topics covered will include cultural considerations when working with LGBQTIA+ children\, youth and families\, working with caregivers that are not supportive of LGBTQIA+ youth\, preparing the team\, family and child for the process\, allyship\, pronouns\, engaging community partners\, vetting resources for LGBQTIA+ families\, considerations for the forensic protocol and the use of interview aids. While considerations for the forensic interview will be discussed in this course\, the primary focus of this training is on the MDT\, as a whole. \nThis training is appropriate for law enforcement\, prosecuting attorneys\, child protection workers\, forensic interviewers\, mental health professionals\, medical providers\, advocates\, community liaisons\, and youth serving professionals that may interact with LGBTQIA+ children and youth. \nThis event will be held virtually via Zoom. A Zoom link will be sent out to registrants prior to the training. \nLearning Objectives\n\nDiscuss considerations for engaging meaningfully with LGBQTIA+ victim/survivors and their families in the MDT process\, including work with non-supportive parents and caregivers.\nIncrease understanding of LGBTQIA+ culture\, including the issues that affect the LGBTQIA+ community.\nRecognize how LGBTQIA+ victim/survivor’s experiences with systems providers and polyvictimzations can affect interactions child abuse professionals may have with LGBTQIA+ victims and their families.\nOffer tools for professionals to examine current practices and suggestions for practice to create more affirmative interactions and environments for LGBTQIA+ children and families.\n\nTrainers\nRachel Johnson is the Lead Forensic Interview Specialist with Zero Abuse Project. Rachel most recently served as the Program Director for the Minnesota Children’s Alliance and has fourteen years of experience in work related to forensic interviewing\, multidisciplinary teams\, advocacy\, child abuse\, prevention education\, sexual assault and family violence\, both domestically and abroad. Bettering the systemic response to LGBTQIA+ victim/survivors of sexual abuse and abuse has been an on-going focus of their academic\, professional\, and community-based work. \nCaitie Dahl is a Forensic Interview Specialist and Trainer with Zero Abuse Project. Prior to joining Zero Abuse\, Caitie served as a Forensic Interviewer\, Forensic Program Coordinator\, Trainer\, and Multidisciplinary Team Facilitator with First Witness Child Advocacy Center in Duluth\, Minnesota. SUMMARY:Understanding Social Emotional Developmental and a Way to Healing
DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nMinnesota Association for Children’s Mental Health (MACMH) will present a live webinar with Tiffany Grant\, Business Development Manager\, Trainer\, and Coach at First Children’s Finance. During this presentation\, participants will learn to define stages of social-emotional development and how to support children through each stage. The presenter will explore ways to foster healing by focusing on each child’s needs and examining how to support families by exploring resources that help families support children at home. This training is intended for early childhood professionals\, family members\, and social services professionals. \nThree Learning Objectives\n\nParticipants will be able to recognize and identify Social Emotional Development and how to foster healing.\nParticipants will learn Social Emotional Strategies that help children with self-regulation.\nParticipants will gain access to a field of resources on fostering healing with children and families.\n\nAbout the Presenter\nTiffany Grant is currently working to fortify the ECE business model as a Business Development Manager at First Children’s Finance. As a continuing advocate for equity and inclusion\, she helped establish a peer networking resource group for entrepreneurs of color called Community Conversations for Early Childhood Entrepreneurs. Tiffany’s expertise lies in bridging the gaps between childcare business\, advocacy\, and equity where she has sought to help BOPIC business owners navigate the structural and systemic barriers they encounter every day. Tiffany has a talent for identifying areas of the Early Childhood Field where discrepancies exist and has worked to specifically target those areas of need. Her work in coaching and training\, as well as in compliance and curriculum development has helped to highlight these needs. Knowing the importance of continuing education\, Tiffany also works as a trainer in the subjects of early childhood trauma\, African American Language. Additional examples of meaningful contributions to the field include co-founding an ECE branch within the Excell Academy for Higher Learning charter school. DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nThe March 2023 Fundamentals in Victim Services 201 Training is a virtual training for experienced victim advocates to expand and deepen their core knowledge and skills in providing victim-centered services. This training is designed for victim advocates who have been in the field for 5+ years. By the end of this training\, advocates will be able to: \n\nUnderstand the neurobiology of trauma in victimization and develop skills for providing trauma-responsive advocacy to all victims of crime.\nExpand their understanding of vicarious trauma and strategies to build resilience to sustain their career in victim services.\nUnderstand and examine their own Occupational Identity (OI) and identify strategies for cultivating healthy boundaries; and\nDescribe the reparations process and have a detailed understanding of the current statutes regarding reparations\nRecognize and interrogate the roles of bias\, privilege\, and oppression in their daily work\nUnderstand the ways in which evaluation and grant reporting can be effective and culturally responsive\nFurthermore\, training participants will have opportunities to connect with one another and with experienced professionals with a range of knowledge and skills.\n\nExpectations for the Virtual Format\nFundamentals in Victim Services 201 will feature interactive modules to appeal to different styles of learning\, with a combination of lecture\, small group work in breakout sessions\, and opportunities for individual reflection. The number of attendees will be limited to 30 to maximize the quality of interaction. \nModules will take place live via Zoom. Attendees will be expected to actively participate\, using the chat to engage with presenters and other participants\, and turning on cameras and unmuting during large group discussions and breakout sessions. \nMAC will award a certificate of completion to attendees who complete all the modules. DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nMinnesota Association for Children’s Mental Health (MACMH) is presenting a live webinar with Alyssa Madon\, Occupational Therapist at the M Health Fairview. This presentation is an introduction to sensory processing and its relationship with children that have experienced trauma. It will cover pertinent definitions and evidence-based connections to the outward responses (i.e. behaviors\, emotional difficulties\, etc) that are often seen in children that are having difficulty with sensory processing. The training will provide examples to increase comprehension and demonstrate appropriate strategies for immediate use in working with children. \nFour Learning Objectives:\n\nAttendees will be able to define basic sensory processing-related terminology\nAttendees will be able to identify the relationship between sensory processing and children who have experienced trauma.\nAttendees will be able to recognize the signs of sensory dysregulation in children who have experienced trauma.\nAttendees will be able to implement at least 5 sensory-based strategies to increase sensory regulation.\n\nAbout the Presenter\nAlyssa Mason is a pediatric occupational therapist. She received her undergraduate degree in Human Development and Family Studies with a focus on child development and a master’s degree in occupational therapy with certificates in equity and diversity\, and disability and policy. Alyssa has experience working as an early childhood educator\, and a Children’s Mental Health Targeted Case Manager before starting work as a pediatric occupational therapist across multiple settings including schools\, inpatient hospitals and outpatient clinics.
