SUMMARY:First Witness Advocacy Training for Advocates Working With a Child Advocacy Center
DESCRIPTION:First Witness advocacy training seeks to build a community of advocates who share knowledge\, insights\, skills and support as they continue their work. \nOverview\nMore than 30 years ago\, the movements to end violence against women and children began with largely volunteer groups working out of church basements\, houses\, and small community offices. Initially\, many advocates were themselves survivors of physical and sexual violence. Early advocates connected women and children to resources and safety. They also identified solutions to the larger problem of societal/family or gender violence. \nToday\, advocates exist in a variety of capacities and specialties within non-profit and government organizations. We work in an age of increased public awareness\, organized criminal justice response\, and ongoing funding within the child abuse\, sexual assault\, and domestic violence movements. Although these factors allow for a higher level of services\, often the notion of broader social change is lost. Advocates are relegated to bullet-point job descriptions\, the ultimate goal of which is providing service rather than creating change. \nRegister online via First Witness. \nPurpose\nFirst Witness Advocacy creates an advocacy perspective rooted in the experiences of those hurt by violence and abuse. This perspective informs the advocacy practice as well as the policies and job descriptions that define advocates’ roles. It also guides program and organizational development\, system interventions and community understanding of the social problems at the root of violence and abuse. With the First Witness Advocacy perspective\, advocates and organizations can better respond on both the individual and the societal levels\, creating long-term safety for abuse victims and entire communities. \nFirst Witness Advocacy bridges the gap between individual advocacy with one victim and system-based advocacy that creates change for many victims. This is in contrast to more restrictive advocacy models that are based on delivering services identified by practitioners. Through hands-on practice\, participants will learn how to put advocacy principles into action\, including conducting a focus group to improve programming\, changing organizations and systems and creating programs and interventions that meet victims’ needs. Participants will practice skills for effective crisis intervention and advocacy\, problem solving and decision making around the toughest issues in advocacy work. SUMMARY:Extended Forensic Interviews: practical skills for multiple sessions
DESCRIPTION:Due to the strong response to this training\, we’ve partnered to hold a second session for those who’re unable to register for the first session held in July 2021. \nTraining Overview\nMinnesota Children’s Alliance (the Alliance) is excited to host Extended Forensic Interviews: Practical skills for multiple session care\, with Rita Farrell\, Forensic Interview and Director of ChildFirst® for Zero Abuse Project\, and Julie Stauffer\, LICSW\, Forensic Interviewing Manager with CornerHouse\, Wednesday\, July 14\, 2021\, 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.\, via Zoom HealthCare. \nBased on the nationally recognized ChildFirst® Forensic Interview and CornerHouse Forensic Interview Protocol™ models\, this one-day training will give an overview of conducting multiple-session forensic interviews when a child may not succeed in a standard\, single-session interview due to trauma\, development\, special needs\, or other complicating factors\, including poly-victimization. This advanced training will discuss the multi-session and expanded interview processes; provide practical information for conducting follow-up interviews; and offer real-world examples as well as research supporting multiple-session\, non-duplicative interviews with child victims and witnesses. Note that this training will include information and practical skills to prepare participants to appropriately conduct a follow-up forensic interview; however\, this workshop is not intended to replace the more comprehensive training recommended before conducting other types of multiple-session forensic interviews. \nLearning Objectives\nThrough lecture\, discussion\, and practice activities\, participants will: \n\nLearn what a multiple-session forensic interview is\, identify and differentiate various types of multiple-session interviews\, and be introduced to the MultiSession Forensic Interview and Expanded Forensic Interview – two possible models of conducting a defensible\, multiple-session forensic interview\nDiscuss the research that supports conducting a non-duplicative\, multiple-session forensic interview.\nConsider criteria for determining appropriate situations to use a multiple-session interview process with an individual child and examine how to incorporate a multiple-session process into current practice.\n\n\nTrainers\n \nRita Farrell\nDirector of ChildFirst®\nZero Abuse Project\nRita serves as the Director of ChildFirst® for Zero Abuse Project. Rita manages the ChildFirst® Forensic Interview Training Program\, ChildFirst® Arkansas state program\, and development of advanced training courses and programs for forensic interviewers. Rita is a certified law enforcement instructor and provides training and technical assistance for child protection professionals. Rita currently conducts forensic interviews and has interviewed more than 2\,500 children. She serves as an expert witness on child sexual abuse\, authored many peer-reviewed articles specific to forensic interviewing\, and continues to champion the cause of child advocacy and the field of forensic interviewing. Rita graduated from Ball State University with a degree in secondary education and was the founding executive director of Chaucie’s Place\, a Child Advocacy Center in Hamilton County\, Indiana. \nJulie Stauffer\nForensic Interviewing Manager\nCornerHouse\nJulie is a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker with a Master’s and Bachelors’s Degree in Social Work. Julie is the Forensic Interviewing Manager at CornerHouse\, where she supervises CornerHouse’s team of forensic interviewers and manages the forensic interview program. Additionally in her roles as a Forensic Interviewer and Trainer\, Julie conducts forensic interviews with children\, adolescents\, and vulnerable adults regarding allegations of abuse or witnessing of violence; provides training for professionals in basic and advanced forensic interviewing skills and regarding other related topics\, conducting training on a local\, national\, and international level; testifies as an expert witness; has authored and co-authored published articles regarding forensic interviewing; serves as a moderator for a national\, online peer review process; participates in local and national task forces and committees; and engages in ongoing updating and development of the CornerHouse Forensic Interview Protocol™ and other practices. SUMMARY:CornerHouse Basic Forensic Interview Training

SUMMARY:A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words: Presenting Evidence in the F.I.
DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nThe use of technology has impacted how children/adolescents are victimized. Research supports that the use of technology during victimization can increase the likelihood that a victim will not disclose. Most interview models are designed for children who have previously disclosed and who transition easily from the beginning of the interview to a substantive interview. Reluctant children may need more cues which may mean utilizing evidence in the forensic interview. This module will discuss the use of evidence\, with emphasis on abusive images\, in the interview. \nLearning Objectives\n\nParticipants will understand how evidence may be used in a forensic interview.\nParticipants will learn how to present evidence in the forensic interview.\nParticipants will be able to understand the dynamics of victims of abusive images.\n\nTrainer\nPresenter Bonnie I. Fries\, MSW\, LCSW\, Child & Adolescent Forensic Interviewer with the Federal Bureau of Investigations\, is a licensed clinical social worker in the state of Illinois with specialized training in child and adolescent welfare and abuse-related trauma. She received her Bachelor of Social Work degree in 1998 from Illinois State University’s Jane Addams College of Social Work and Master of Social Work degree in 2001 from the University of Illinois at Chicago. Prior to joining the FBI Bonnie worked as an Assistant Director and Director within Children’s Advocacy Centers\, and has conducted more than 2\,000 forensic interviews. \nContinuing Education Credits\nPOST and Social Work credits will be available. \nWe are excited to bring this training to you at a minimal fee. SUMMARY:First Witness ChildFirst® Forensic Interview Training
DESCRIPTION:General Information\nThe ChildFirst® Forensic Interview Protocol training brings the field into the classroom\, enhancing the proficiency of front-line child abuse professionals. This course is designed for investigative teams of law enforcement officers\, social workers\, prosecutors\, child protection attorneys\, and forensic interviewers. Students receive training on the ChildFirst® Forensic Interview Protocol\, child development\, memory and suggestibility\, testifying in court\, legal issues\, and preparing children for court. This training incorporates lecture and discussion\, review of electronically recorded interviews\, skill-building exercises\, and an interview practicum with professional actors. \nChildFirst® is a unique approach to forensic interviewing for several reasons:\n\nChildFirst® was designed by and for the front-line child abuse professional.\nCourses teach students to apply the latest research to real-world situations.\nStudents watch numerous videotaped child sexual abuse interviews as a means of bringing the course material to life.\nThe program requires students to demonstrate their interviewing skills.\nChildFirst® models the multidisciplinary approach.\nThe education incorporates a practicum forensic interview with a trained actor portraying a child abuse victim.\nThe program encourages ongoing critiques of students’ interviewing skills to improve their technique.\nThe ChildFirst® forensic interview course has been approved by the National Children’s Alliance to meet accreditation standards.\n\nWhat’s new?\nWe know that narrative practice and invitations are the best way to reduce suggestibility and create a child-centered interview. The narrative invitation is utilized throughout the interview process and taught in the forensic interview training. We have made subtle yet essential changes in how interview instructions are incorporated in the interview. \nFirst Witness’s updated protocol and training information will prepare each attendee to conduct a purposeful and legally defensible interview. This training is designed for child protection workers\, tribal social service workers\, law enforcement officers\, and county attorneys whose primary responsibility is investigating and prosecuting child sexual abuse cases. \nContinuing Education Credits\nP.O.S.T. and C.L.E. credits available for Minnesota participants. The purpose of NCAC’s Building Forensic Interviewing Skills Online Training is to provide professionals\, who have completed a nationally or state-recognized forensic interview training\, the opportunity to strengthen and expand their practical skills. \nResearch proves that forensic interviewers do not use as many open-ended questions as they believe they do\, and many interviewers find it challenging to follow best practices.  This training will provide opportunities to review and practice key elements of forensic interviewing\, to improve practice and enhance interviewing skills.  In addition\, interviewers will receive preparation and practice tools to use to evaluate their own interviews and to participate in effective peer review with other interviewers. \nQualifications\nTo participate in this course\, participants need to meet the following criteria. \n\nHas completed a nationally- or state-recognized forensic interview training.\nConducts forensic interviews of children on a regular basis as a primary job duty.\nCan complete the necessary coursework in the given time frames.\nHas access to a computer with a webcam\, microphone\, and access to the internet (for mock interviews and consultations).\nCan obtain written permission from a supervisor to participate in this training.\n\nCohort Schedule\n\nCourse begins: June 1\, 2021\nCourse closes: August 27\, 2021\n\n*Participants must complete the course including evaluation\, post mock interview and post test before the closing date.

A brief history of forensic interviewing and current research on memory will allow participants to see how victim/witness statements have been viewed and evaluated in the past and today. Participants will learn to better evaluate statements throughout the course of a criminal investigation from outcry\, to forensic interview\, to trial. \nLearning Objectives\n\nProvide criminal investigators with the principles of suggestibility to inform their understanding of and interactions with victims and witnesses.\nDevelop skills necessary to evaluate statements made throughout the course of a criminal investigation from outcry to forensic interview to trial testimony.\nAssist investigators to become good consumers of the forensic interview process\n\nTrainer\nPresenter Bonnie I. Fries\, MSW\, LCSW\, Child & Adolescent Forensic Interviewer with the Federal Bureau of Investigations\, is a licensed clinical social worker in the state of Illinois with specialized training in child and adolescent welfare and abuse-related trauma. She received her Bachelor of Social Work degree in 1998 from Illinois State University’s Jane Addams College of Social Work and Master of Social Work degree in 2001 from the University of Illinois at Chicago. Prior to joining the FBI Bonnie worked as an Assistant Director and Director within Children’s Advocacy Centers\, and has conducted more than 2\,000 forensic interviews. \nContinuing Education Credits\nPOST and Social Work credits will be available. \nWe are excited to bring this training to you at a minimal fee. This training incorporates lecture and discussion\, review of electronically recorded interviews\, skill-building exercises\, and an interview practicum with professional actors. \nChildFirst® is a unique approach to forensic interviewing for several reasons:\n\nChildFirst® was designed by and for the front-line child abuse professional.\nCourses teach students to apply the latest research to real-world situations.\nStudents watch numerous videotaped child sexual abuse interviews as a means of bringing the course material to life.\nThe program requires students to demonstrate their interviewing skills.\nChildFirst® models the multidisciplinary approach.\nThe education incorporates a practicum forensic interview with a trained actor portraying a child abuse victim.\nThe program encourages ongoing critiques of students’ interviewing skills to improve their technique.\nThe ChildFirst® forensic interview course has been approved by the National Children’s Alliance to meet accreditation standards.\n\nWhat’s new?\nWe know that narrative practice and invitations are the best way to reduce suggestibility and create a child-centered interview. The narrative invitation is utilized throughout the interview process and taught in the forensic interview training. We have made subtle yet essential changes in how interview instructions are incorporated in the interview. \nFirst Witness’s updated protocol and training information will prepare each attendee to conduct a purposeful and legally defensible interview. This training is designed for child protection workers\, tribal social service workers\, law enforcement officers\, and county attorneys whose primary responsibility is investigating and prosecuting child sexual abuse cases. \nContinuing Education Credits\nP.O.S.T. and C.L.E. credits available for Minnesota participants. DESCRIPTION:Overview\nThis training teaches the CornerHouse Forensic Interview Protocol™ a credible\, reliable\, developmentally flexible\, and non-traumatic forensic interview protocol appropriate for children\, adolescents\, and vulnerable adults involved in a sexual abuse investigation. \nTraining methods include lecture and discussion\, review of CornerHouse video-recorded interviews\, skill-building exercises\, and an interview practicum. These courses are designed for teams of forensic interviewers\, child protection workers\, tribal social service investigators\, law enforcement officers\, and prosecuting attorneys. Participants are encouraged to attend as a multidisciplinary team. DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nThe Minnesota Children’s Alliance (the Alliance) is excited to host Working with Latino Children and Families within the MDT Process: A trauma-informed approach\, with Liz Franklin\, Tuesday\, November 17\, 2020\, 10:00 a.m. – noon\, via Zoom. \nIn this session\, participants will examine the role of cultural responsiveness among the larger Latino experiences within the North American systems context. Through the trauma-informed care approach participants will be introduced to common misconceptions when working with members of Latino communities\, in order to promote further healing. \nLearning Objectives\n\nUnderstand ways in which culture and privilege impact provider\, organization\, and system functioning.\nDiscuss individual and systems practices to improve access to care.\nExplore options for delivering evidence-based models such as TF-CBT in more culturally resonant ways.\n\nTrainer\nElizabeth (Liz)\, Franklin MSW\, LICSW\, received her BAs from the University of Kansas in Spanish and in American Studies\, and her MSW from the University of Minnesota.  Liz has worked as an elementary school Latino Family Liaison\, a Children’s Mental Health Case Manager\, a School-based Therapist\, and an outpatient therapist in private practice. She is currently the Senior Manager of Community Based Mental Health Services at Comunidades Latinas Unidas en Servicio (CLUES). \nLiz also teaches the Advanced Clinical Practice with Children and Adolescents course in the School of Social Work’s graduate program at the University of Minnesota. Liz serves on the Board of MACMH\, and she is Chair of the Board of El Consorcio (formerly the Twin Cities Spanish-speaking Provider Consortium)\, an interdisciplinary group of over 250 Spanish-speaking mental health providers\, social service providers\, medical social workers\, and school social workers. \nContinuing Education Credits and Training Fee\nPOST and Social Work credits will be available. \nWe are excited to bring this training to you. SUMMARY:Trauma-Informed Care in the COVID-19 Era: ACES\, Telehealth and Beyond
DESCRIPTION:Trainer\nPresenter Megan Gerber\, MD\, MPH is a general internist with a career-long focus on the medical care of trauma-exposed women. She is currently an Associate Professor of Medicine at Boston University and Medical Director of Women’s Health at VA Boston. She holds an adjunct appointment as Lecturer on Medicine at Harvard Medical School. Her work focuses on optimizing medical outcomes for women who have experienced trauma as well as adapting systems of care to be trauma-informed and sensitive to the needs of survivors. She has authored multiple peer-reviewed publications on intimate partner violence and is the editor of the recently released Springer book\, “Trauma-informed Healthcare Approaches: A Guide for Primary Care.” \nTraining Overview\nIn this presentation\, Dr. Gerber will review the long-term health impact adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and other traumas have on patients in adult primary care. She will discuss the ways in which the COVID-19 pandemic\, and other recent collective adversities\, may be worsening outcomes for trauma-exposed persons. DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nThis webinar will discuss best practices for interviewing children who recant their previous disclosure of sexual abuse. The webinar will review the research on what factors influence children to recant and listen to clips of interviews in which children recant. Focus will not be on the child’s previous disclosures\, what others have said to the child about their allegations and how the child feels about the changes in their life since the original disclosure. \nTrainer\nDr. Thomas Lyon is the Judge Edward J. and Ruey L. Guirado Chair of Law and Psychology at the University of Southern Gould School of Law. His research examines the best means by which child witnesses can be questioned in order to maximize their productivity and minimize error. His work has been supported by the National Institutes of Health\, the National Science Foundation\, and the U.S. Department of Justice.

DESCRIPTION:The Minnesota Department of Public Safety Office of Justice Programs is currently accepting applications for the 2020 Minnesota Victim Assistance Academy. The academy will be 100% virtual. Learn more about the program. \nProgram Overview\nThe Minnesota Victim Assistance Academy (MNVAA) is a foundational-level educational opportunity for victim service providers and criminal justice professionals offered by the Minnesota Office of Justice Programs (OJP). MNVAA is an intensive course of study designed to improve the quality and consistency of victim services in Minnesota. It uses a multi-disciplinary educational approach to convey the knowledge\, skills\, and attitudes practitioners will need as they seek to restore victims and help them regain control of their lives. The comprehensive curriculum has been created specifically for Minnesota by a multidisciplinary committee assembled by the Minnesota Office of Justice Programs (OJP) and its partners. \nAcademy information and selection criteria are described in the application\, along with directions on how to apply. Applicants who are accepted will be notified via email. Academy students who attend and successfully complete the 40-hour training will receive a certificate of completion. Academic credit is available for an additional fee\, and CEUs/POST credits may be available. \nThe application process is competitive due to limited space.
