SUMMARY:Suggestibility and Memory: Considerations for the Criminal Investigation
DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nThis module will provide criminal investigators with the principles of suggestibility to inform their understanding when interacting with victims and witnesses of crime. A brief history of forensic interviewing and current research on memory will allow participants to see how victim/witness statements have been viewed and evaluated in the past and today. Participants will learn to better evaluate statements throughout the course of a criminal investigation from outcry\, to forensic interview\, to trial. \nLearning Objectives\n\nProvide criminal investigators with the principles of suggestibility to inform their understanding of and interactions with victims and witnesses.\nDevelop skills necessary to evaluate statements made throughout the course of a criminal investigation from outcry to forensic interview to trial testimony.\nAssist investigators to become good consumers of the forensic interview process\n\nTrainer\nPresenter Bonnie I. Fries\, MSW\, LCSW\, Child & Adolescent Forensic Interviewer with the Federal Bureau of Investigations\, is a licensed clinical social worker in the state of Illinois with specialized training in child and adolescent welfare and abuse-related trauma. She received her Bachelor of Social Work degree in 1998 from Illinois State University’s Jane Addams College of Social Work and Master of Social Work degree in 2001 from the University of Illinois at Chicago. Prior to joining the FBI Bonnie worked as an Assistant Director and Director within Children’s Advocacy Centers\, and has conducted more than 2\,000 forensic interviews. \nContinuing Education Credits\nPOST and Social Work credits will be available. \nWe are excited to bring this training to you at a minimal fee. The Alliance believes trauma-informed\, anti-racist\, and culturally responsive services are essential to helping children heal. SUMMARY:First Witness ChildFirst® Forensic Interview Training
DESCRIPTION:General Information\nThe ChildFirst® Forensic Interview Protocol training brings the field into the classroom\, enhancing the proficiency of front-line child abuse professionals. This course is designed for investigative teams of law enforcement officers\, social workers\, prosecutors\, child protection attorneys\, and forensic interviewers. Students receive training on the ChildFirst® Forensic Interview Protocol\, child development\, memory and suggestibility\, testifying in court\, legal issues\, and preparing children for court. This training incorporates lecture and discussion\, review of electronically recorded interviews\, skill-building exercises\, and an interview practicum with professional actors. \nChildFirst® is a unique approach to forensic interviewing for several reasons:\n\nChildFirst® was designed by and for the front-line child abuse professional.\nCourses teach students to apply the latest research to real-world situations.\nStudents watch numerous videotaped child sexual abuse interviews as a means of bringing the course material to life.\nThe program requires students to demonstrate their interviewing skills.\nChildFirst® models the multidisciplinary approach.\nThe education incorporates a practicum forensic interview with a trained actor portraying a child abuse victim.\nThe program encourages ongoing critiques of students’ interviewing skills to improve their technique.\nThe ChildFirst® forensic interview course has been approved by the National Children’s Alliance to meet accreditation standards.\n\nWhat’s new?\nWe know that narrative practice and invitations are the best way to reduce suggestibility and create a child-centered interview. The narrative invitation is utilized throughout the interview process and taught in the forensic interview training. We have made subtle yet essential changes in how interview instructions are incorporated in the interview. \nFirst Witness’s updated protocol and training information will prepare each attendee to conduct a purposeful and legally defensible interview. This training is designed for child protection workers\, tribal social service workers\, law enforcement officers\, and county attorneys whose primary responsibility is investigating and prosecuting child sexual abuse cases. \nContinuing Education Credits\nP.O.S.T. and C.L.E. credits available for Minnesota participants. Our comprehensive Institute offers a unique opportunity to participate in an intensive training experience and have personal interaction with leading experts in the field of child forensic interviewing. \nAbout the Forensic Interviewing Clinics & Institutes\nDeveloped by top experts\, APSAC’s curriculum teaches a structured narrative interview approach that emphasizes best practices based on research and is guided by the best interests of the child. Attendees will receive a balanced review of several protocols and will develop their own customized narrative interview approach based on the principles taught during the Clinic and contained in the 2012 APSAC Practice Guidelines on Forensic Interviewing in Cases of Suspected Child Abuse. \nSession Dates: April 5\, 9\, 12 and 16\, 2021. \nContinuing Education\nCEU’s are available\, however CME’s are not available at this time. SUMMARY:Working with Latino Children and Families within the MDT Process
DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nThe Minnesota Children’s Alliance (the Alliance) is excited to host Working with Latino Children and Families within the MDT Process: A trauma-informed approach\, with Liz Franklin\, Tuesday\, November 17\, 2020\, 10:00 a.m. – noon\, via Zoom. \nIn this session\, participants will examine the role of cultural responsiveness among the larger Latino experiences within the North American systems context. Through the trauma-informed care approach participants will be introduced to common misconceptions when working with members of Latino communities\, in order to promote further healing. \nLearning Objectives\n\nUnderstand ways in which culture and privilege impact provider\, organization\, and system functioning.\nDiscuss individual and systems practices to improve access to care.\nExplore options for delivering evidence-based models such as TF-CBT in more culturally resonant ways.\n\nTrainer\nElizabeth (Liz)\, Franklin MSW\, LICSW\, received her BAs from the University of Kansas in Spanish and in American Studies\, and her MSW from the University of Minnesota.  Liz has worked as an elementary school Latino Family Liaison\, a Children’s Mental Health Case Manager\, a School-based Therapist\, and an outpatient therapist in private practice. She is currently the Senior Manager of Community Based Mental Health Services at Comunidades Latinas Unidas en Servicio (CLUES). \nLiz also teaches the Advanced Clinical Practice with Children and Adolescents course in the School of Social Work’s graduate program at the University of Minnesota. Liz serves on the Board of MACMH\, and she is Chair of the Board of El Consorcio (formerly the Twin Cities Spanish-speaking Provider Consortium)\, an interdisciplinary group of over 250 Spanish-speaking mental health providers\, social service providers\, medical social workers\, and school social workers. \nContinuing Education Credits and Training Fee\nPOST and Social Work credits will be available. \nWe are excited to bring this training to you. SUMMARY:Trauma-Informed Care in the COVID-19 Era: ACES\, Telehealth and Beyond
DESCRIPTION:Trainer\nPresenter Megan Gerber\, MD\, MPH is a general internist with a career-long focus on the medical care of trauma-exposed women. She is currently an Associate Professor of Medicine at Boston University and Medical Director of Women’s Health at VA Boston. She holds an adjunct appointment as Lecturer on Medicine at Harvard Medical School. Her work focuses on optimizing medical outcomes for women who have experienced trauma as well as adapting systems of care to be trauma-informed and sensitive to the needs of survivors. She has authored multiple peer-reviewed publications on intimate partner violence and is the editor of the recently released Springer book\, “Trauma-informed Healthcare Approaches: A Guide for Primary Care.” \nTraining Overview\nIn this presentation\, Dr. Gerber will review the long-term health impact adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and other traumas have on patients in adult primary care. She will discuss the ways in which the COVID-19 pandemic\, and other recent collective adversities\, may be worsening outcomes for trauma-exposed persons. Guirado Chair of Law and Psychology at the University of Southern Gould School of Law. DESCRIPTION:The Minnesota Department of Public Safety Office of Justice Programs is currently accepting applications for the 2020 Minnesota Victim Assistance Academy. The academy will be 100% virtual. Learn more about the program. \nProgram Overview\nThe Minnesota Victim Assistance Academy (MNVAA) is a foundational-level educational opportunity for victim service providers and criminal justice professionals offered by the Minnesota Office of Justice Programs (OJP). MNVAA is an intensive course of study designed to improve the quality and consistency of victim services in Minnesota. It uses a multi-disciplinary educational approach to convey the knowledge\, skills\, and attitudes practitioners will need as they seek to restore victims and help them regain control of their lives. The comprehensive curriculum has been created specifically for Minnesota by a multidisciplinary committee assembled by the Minnesota Office of Justice Programs (OJP) and its partners. \nAcademy information and selection criteria are described in the application\, along with directions on how to apply. Applicants who are accepted will be notified via email. Academy students who attend and successfully complete the 40-hour training will receive a certificate of completion. Academic credit is available for an additional fee\, and CEUs/POST credits may be available. \nThe application process is competitive due to limited space. DESCRIPTION:Parents often defend their use of physical punishment by pointing to the norms of their cultural group. Dr. Gershoff will discuss some of the cultural norms regarding physical punishment and what research and science can tell us about each. She will also describe evidence of cultural shifts away from physical punishment in some communities and highlight what these shifts tell us about ways to affect larger community-level change. \nDr. Elizabeth Gershoff is a Professor in the Department of Human Development and Family Sciences and Associate Director of the Population Research Center at the University of Texas at Austin. She is an internationally recognized expert on the effects of physical punishment on children and the 2019 recipient of the Nicholas Hobbs Award recognizing her work advocating on behalf of children.

DESCRIPTION:This training discusses affirmative practices for child abuse MDT professionals supporting and serving LGBTQIA+ children and families.\n\n\nAbout this Training\nThis training will include a Gender and Sexuality 101 course to establish shared language and definitions and will outline considerations for MDT disciplines\, including forensic interviewers.\nTopics Include:\n\nIncreasing understanding of LGBTQIA+ culture\, including the issues that affect the LGBTQIA+ community and how these dynamics impact their experiences with system providers.\nTools for professionals to examine current practices and create more affirmative interactions and environments for LGBTQIA+ children and families.\nExamining the role of multiple identities and polyvictimization in work with LGBTQIA+ children and families.\n\nIntended Audience:\nThis cultural impact training opportunity is beneficial for any member of a multidisciplinary team and Children’s Advocacy Centers. \nTrainers:\nKaelie Lund\nVictim Assistance Specialist\, Jacob Wetterling Resource Center\nZero Abuse Project \nKaelie Lund (they/them) is a Victim Assistance Specialist with the Jacob Wetterling Resource Center\, a program of Zero Abuse Project\, where they assist families of missing persons and train students\, parents\, and non-profit professionals. Kaelie graduated from St. Olaf College with degrees in sociology and anthropology\, women’s and gender studies\, and family studies. Kaelie is also a state-certified sexual assault/domestic violence advocate with over 100 hours of trauma-informed training. \nKaelie most recently worked at Carleton College as an Assistant Dean of Admissions where they worked closely with Carleton’s Gender & Sexuality Center and coordinated Carleton’s Green Dot Bystander Intervention program to train hundreds of student leaders on how to be an active bystander. Kaelie is passionate about working with young people\, educating others on LGBTQIA+ best practices\, and is thrilled to be working at a non-profit so close to their heart. \nRachel Johnson\nForensic Interview Specialist\nZero Abuse Project \nRachel Johnson (she/her/they/them) has over a decade of experience in work related to child abuse\, forensic interviewing\, multidisciplinary teams\, victimization\, advocacy\, prevention education\, and family violence\, both domestically and abroad. She currently works as a Forensic Interview Specialist with Zero Abuse Project where she provides training and technical assistance to child abuse professionals\, and designs and develops curriculum. \nRachel most recently served as the Program Director for the Minnesota Children’s Alliance. Prior to her work at the Alliance\, Rachel served as a forensic interviewer and the Forensic Program Coordinator at First Witness Child Advocacy Center. She is trained in multiple forensic interview protocols. Rachel received Bachelor of Science degrees in Public Service\, sociology and Spanish at Hamline University in St. Paul\, Minnesota. Rachel is passionate about working directly with children and families\, supporting front-line professionals and improving the institutional response to victimization by centering the experiences of victims at all levels of consideration and decision- making.

SUMMARY:Problematic Intrafamilial Sexual Behaviors
DESCRIPTION:This interactive training series will follow one family’s journey and increase the participant’s understanding of what problematic sexual behaviors are\, where they come from\, and how to respond empathetically and in the best interest of all the children. \nPlease note\, this training will take place over three sessions\, the first of which will be held on July 14. When you complete the registration below\, you will have the opportunity to indicate your attendance at all sessions. \nTraining Overview\nThe training utilizes an interactive module from the intervention Problematic Sexual Behavior – Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Adolescents (PSB-CBT-A) where participants explore common reactions of caregivers. Participants also practice the best ways to engage with families and how to offer concrete solutions that address safety concerns within the home. SUMMARY:Porn: Let's Talk About It!
DESCRIPTION:As a generation raised on technology\, kids today are turning to the internet to fill in the gaps their sex education has left open. \nWebinar Overview\nKids are exposed to pornography at high rates due to free and accessible porn websites. On these websites\, children can easily confuse violent\, misogynistic\, and degrading themes as normal sexual behavior\, and most of the content does not convey a culture that requires consent. \nRegister online.  \nIn this session\, we will discuss the prevalence at which children and adolescents access pornography.
