SUMMARY:CornerHouse | Empowering Survivors to Understand the Impact of Childhood Trauma
DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nExperiences in childhood matter. Numerous research studies have shown how childhood stress and trauma can impact adult health. The Ace Study is the largest study investigating the health and social effects of negative childhood experiences. Now that we have the research\, what can we do about it? The cycle of violence\, generational poverty and abuse\, homelessness\, substance abuse\, incarceration\, perpetration and victimization of violence are all related to ACE’s. But what if this is my story? \nMany adult survivors of child abuse have not or could not receive a collaborative response to their maltreatment for many reasons. One\, statute of limitations. Two\, prior to Child Advocacy Centers being established at the time of the maltreatment. Three\, the lack of understanding and responding to potential child maltreatment at the time. Helping survivors of childhood trauma understand the impact that ACE’s may have on their health and well-being is step one. Acknowledging the barriers and times when a survivor feels stuck is step two. Creating tools and self-care strategies is the lifetime journey to hope\, health and happiness. You are NOT your ACE score. It is NOT a diagnosis. This training will not only help you to support current survivors but survivors who never received support to process their victimization. \nThis important training is being offered FREE to MDT members within the state of Minnesota. MDT members include any Child Advocacy Center (CAC) staff\, law enforcement/peace officers\, Department of Children and Families\, attorneys and advocates within a county attorney’ office\, medical providers and educators who serve/work with their local Child Advocacy Center. Please ConerHouse if you have questions regarding the MDT requirement. \nObjectives\n\nSupporting survivors to change their inner dialogue from “what is wrong with me?” to “What happened to me”.\nRecognize types of child maltreatment and adversity and how it may impact adulthood.\nIdentify risk and protective factors to understand what may be triggering and what is considered self-care and healing.\n\nRegister Through CornerHouse

SUMMARY:NCAC Interviewing Children on the Autism Spectrum
DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nChildren with neurodivergent disorders such as ASD are at an increased risk of child maltreatment. This population presents challenges for forensic interviewers as there is great variability in functioning including unique memory and cognitive processes\, linguistic style\, understanding and expression of emotions\, and forming connections with others. Many of these children can provide information about their experiences if the interviewer is able to adapt questioning approaches and interview strategies to meet the needs of this child. Preparation and flexibility are key. While providing a review of possible domains of impact on functioning\, this training will focus on tips for information gathering\, preparation with the investigative partners to set reasonable expectations\, and adaptations to questioning strategies and interview phases. \nThis training is recommended for forensic interviewers who have developed some comfort and flexibility with the continuum of questioning strategies and the phases of a forensic interview. \nRegister through NCAC\nRegister by Sunday\, April 20\, 2025

SUMMARY:Justice Clearinghouse | Not All Therapies Are Created Equal: What Courts Need to Know When Ordering "Therapy" for Families
DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nCourts regularly order therapy for multiple reasons.  The courts are\, unfortunately\, at the mercy of what is available in their area.  This webinar is designed to go “behind the curtain” to show court officials what really happens in therapy. \nDid you know that up to 80% of what happens in therapy is not based on science\, despite the science has existed for decades?  Did you also know that a therapist whose sole training in graduate school was with adults with drug problems can (and in many sites does) work with a 5-year-old with Autism despite having no training in that area (and still gets paid for that therapy)?  Do you want to know the one question to ask a child therapist to make sure they are using evidence-based\, effective therapy for that child? \nThese “in the pocket” tips will be the focus of this webinar. \nRegister Through Justice Clearinghouse\n

SUMMARY:Justice Clearinghouse | Five Reasons Your Staff Wellness Program is Going to Fail
DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\n“Staff Wellness” is the new trendy talking point in the correctional world. Jail Administrators and Executives from all over the country are assembling leadership teams and think tanks\, organizing Zoom calls\, and attending retreats and training sessions\, all in an attempt to address the wellness of their staff. \nThe problem is that addressing the wellness of staff is not an easy task to tackle as the correctional culture does not allow for such things to flourish. But we’re at a breaking point. We’ve reached critical mass. We can no longer afford to ignore the effects that the correctional environment has on those who are exposed to it. Our traditional ways of doing business are neither productive nor sustainable. We must adapt if we want to adopt an approach that adequately and appropriately addresses the needs of our staff. \nIn this webinar\, we’ll discuss five potential challenges to starting and sustaining a successful Staff Wellness program and how an agency can navigate those challenges to create an emotionally supportive and psychologically safe environment for staff. \nLearning Objectives\n\nGain a better understanding of what staff may be experiencing and why listening to their perspective is important to the success of a wellness program.\nLearn the importance of placing the right people in the right positions and what that process looks like in their agency.\nBe able to describe ways that their agency can ensure that there is consistency and follow-through related to their wellness program.\nIdentify personal beliefs and internal obstacles that may hinder their want to establish a wellness program.\nLearn about the “culture of toughness” in corrections and how the overtone of their facility could prevent the implementation of a successful wellness program.\n\nRegister Through Justice Clearinghouse\n

SUMMARY:IHS | Supporting LGBTQ+ Youth: Challenges\, Resources\, and Professional Resilience
DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nLGBTQ+ youth\, like all young people\, require environments that nurture their physical\, emotional\, and psychological well-being. They face unique challenges due to stigma\, discrimination\, and lack of understanding\, which can impact their developmental outcomes. LGBTQ+ youth can be at higher risk for suicidal ideation\, self-harm\, running away\, homelessness\, abuse\, and commercial sexual exploitation . These youth along with their families\, benefit from the support of compassionate\, informed professionals to provide services\, information\, and advocacy. \nThe LGBTQ+ community intersects with many other identities and communities. It is imperative that professionals maintain awareness of the intersectional needs of youth. In addition\, professionals supporting the needs of LGBTQ+ youth are having to factor in the rise of political initiatives to reduce or ban support of this population. This leads to ethical dilemmas and the risk of moral injury to the professional. Youth need consistent caring support from adults who are knowledgeable\, well-resourced\, and resilient. Professional self-care is critical so that adults can continue to provide ethical\, responsive care to the diversity of youth in the LGBTQ+ community. \nThis intermediate-level course is appropriate for social workers\, counselors\, psychologists\, and other human services professionals serving LGBTQ+ youth. \nLearning Objectives \n\nDescribe the unique challenges faced by LGBTQ+ youth due to stigma\, discrimination\, and lack of understanding including intersectional identities.\nIdentify a variety of approaches and interventions that support the developmental needs of LGBTQ+ youth.\nCreate a list of resources for support\, advocacy\, and information to benefit LGBTQ+ youth\, their families\, and their communities.\nDiscuss the awareness and implementation of professional self-care so that providers can maintain the resilience needed to provide ethical\, responsive care to LGBTQ+ youth.\n\nRegister Through IHS\nThis training course if free but $10 to receive continuing education credits.
