DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nInvestigators and other practitioners advised to conduct minimal facts interviewing are often told to limit themselves to who\, what\, when\, and where.  But how?  Children are notoriously poor at estimating dates\, which means that “when” can pose difficulties.  Worse\, it can lead to estimates of dating that will lead to inconsistencies and impeachment of the child’s story. Furthermore\, children are reluctant to describe genital touch\, and often ill-equipped to specify the nature of the touch.  Again\, mistakes in eliciting the early report can easily lead to problems for the case down the road. Based on research in child interviewing and developmental psychology\, I’ll discuss how practitioners can avoid these pitfalls and conduct productive minimal facts interviews. \nAbout the Trainer\nThomas D. Lyon\, JD\, PhD \nThomas D. Lyon’s goal is to identify the most productive means of questioning children about abuse and violence. He is the Judge Edward J. and Ruey L. Guirado Chair in Law and Psychology at the University of Southern California Gould School of Law. Lyon is past-president of the American Psychological Association’s Section on Child Maltreatment (Division 37) and a former member of the Board of Directors of the American Professional Society on the Abuse of Children. This comprehensive training session equips participants with the knowledge and tools to assess and strengthen their nonprofit’s readiness to attract funding. Through interactive discussions\, real-life case studies\, and hands-on exercises\, attendees will learn to evaluate their nonprofit’s current state\, identify potential barriers to securing grants\, and develop targeted strategies to overcome any deficiencies or challenges. \nLearning Objectives\n\nAssess Organizational Readiness: The workshop will enable participants to assess their nonprofit organization’s current readiness for funding\, with a focus on grant funding. SUMMARY:Integrating Racial Socialization in TF-CBT Therapy for Black Youth & Family
DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nThe negative consequences of trauma (e.g.\, physical abuse) take a disproportionate toll on Black youth due to the compounding stress of unique race related stressors (e.g.\, witnessing police brutality in the media\, microaggressions). This workshop provides an overview of interpersonal and racial trauma; presents research on systemic\, organizational\, client\, and provider barriers and facilitators to mental health service utilization; and discusses strategies clinicians can PRACTICE (Psychoeducation\, Relaxation\, Affect identification and modulation\, Cognitive restructuring\, Trauma narrative\, In-vivo exposure\, Conjoint parent-child sessions\, Enhancing safety) to integrate racial socialization into treatment to help Black clients heal from interpersonal and racial stress and trauma.\nAbout the Trainer\nDr. Isha Metzger is an Assistant Professor of Psychology at the University of Georgia and Visiting Research Faculty at the Center for Interdisciplinary Research on AIDS’ at Yale University. Dr. Metzger earned her PhD in Clinical-Community Psychology from the University of South Carolina\, she completed her pre-doctoral internship at the Medical University of South Carolina\, and she received postdoctoral training both at the National Crime Victims Center and at Yale University. As Director of The EMPOWER Lab at UGA\, Dr. Metzger focuses on reducing mental health disparities through “Engaging Minorities in Prevention\, Outreach\, Wellness\, Education\, & Research.” Dr. Metzger’s systematic research program is aimed at elucidating the role of culturally specific risk (e.g.\, racial discrimination) and protective (e.g.\, racial socialization) factors to better inform cognitive-behavioral outcomes for Black youth receiving evidence-based services for interpersonal and racial stress and trauma in “real world” settings. Dr. Metzger is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist who offers award-winning instruction\, supervision\, training\, and consultation to students\, professionals\, and organizations across the nation on the delivery of evidence-based treatments for underserved individuals seeking mental health treatment for a range of problems. SUMMARY:CalTrin | Problematic Sexual Behaviors in Children and Adolescents: The Do's and Don'ts for the Criminal Justice System
DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nWhen a child or adolescent sexually acts out it can be a scary experience for not just a parent\, but also for the provider working with the family\, especially if the child is justice system involved.  This webinar will first correct common myths and misconceptions about children who sexually act out (e.g.\, the supermajority of these children are highly responsive to treatment and are NOT pedophiles). \nThe second aspect of this webinar will be a walk-through of the evidence for how to treat these children and the likelihood of success (e.g.\, with appropriate\, evidence-based practices children 3 to 18 who engage in these behaviors are up to 95% successful in treatment and do not sexually reoffend again).  Finally\, the last part of this presentation will tie parts one and two together to answer the question of how providers in the criminal justice system can best help these families as well as keep the community and public safe. \nDuring this webinar\, participants will discuss: \n\nThe “rules of thumb” for addressing problematic sexual behaviors (PSBs) in youth.\nMethods that are contraindicated and counter-therapeutic for intervening in youth with PSBs.\nSpecific resources (e.g.\, NCSBY) and interventions (e.g.\, PSB-CBT) that are effective in helping youth and families impacted by PSBs.\n\nRegister Through CalTrin\n

SUMMARY:NCAC More Than One Interview: When\, Why\, and How
DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nForensic interviewers and multi-disciplinary partners recognize the shortcomings of strict adherence to a “one and done” interview approach. Research provides some clarification of reasons why a child may need more than one interview and limited recommendations for implementation\, leaving forensic interviewers and their investigative partners with little clarity about how to apply this information to day-to-day practice. This training will review supportive literature\, introduce a decision-making process for selecting appropriate cases\, and guidance for conducting follow-up forensic interviews. Recommendations for explaining and defending the multi-session approach are included. This training is recommended for forensic interviewers who have developed some comfort and flexibility with the continuum of questioning strategies and the phases of a forensic interview. \nRegister through NCAC\nRegister by Friday\, October 4\, 2024 \nCancellation Policy\nThe full registration fee is due by the fee deadline stated above in order to hold your spot. Registrants that have not paid in full by the deadline will be released from the training\, and we will contact those on the waitlist. \nIf you are unable to attend the training\, you must submit your cancellation notice at least 30 days prior to the training in order to be refunded the full amount\, less a $100 administrative fee. Your agency may choose to replace your spot in the training with another member of the agency at no penalty. Late cancellations may be considered for a training credit that may be used by your agency for up to one year. Failure to show up for the training forfeits the registration fee completely.

DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nThe Minnesota Children’s Alliance (The Alliance)\, DHS/DCYF\, and MDH Safe Harbor are partnering to provide a training session for Child Advocacy Centers (CACs) across Minnesota. This training will offer an in-depth review and update on the new Minnesota statutes relevant to child welfare’s mandated response to reports of exploitation and trafficking of minors\, as well as their implications for CACs. Participants will gain a thorough understanding of the state-wide response to Human Trafficking and how CACs can access and collaborate with providers and resources in the Safe Harbor Network. \nThis training will dedicate one hour to interactive group work. Participants will collaborate in small groups with their Regional Navigator to explore how each agency can collaborate and improve its coordinated response to child trafficking and exploitation. DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nThis course empowers faith communities to recognize and respond to cases of sexual abuse\, physical abuse\, emotional abuse\, and neglect. Included are discussions detailing the impact of child abuse on a victim’s sense of spirituality and offering concrete suggestions for working with medical and mental health professionals to assist a child in coping with maltreatment. SUMMARY:Building Cultural Competency & Treating Mental Health Among Hmong Americans
DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nThe Hmong are a growing population in the United States\, with approximately 90\,000 living in Minnesota. Most have immigrated since the mid-1970s from Southeast Asia to escape the effects of the Vietnam War. Historically\, the Hmong people struggle with intergenerational trauma\, poverty\, and persecution. This workshop is a comprehensive\, in-depth assessment of the Hmong American community\, their uniqueness as a culture\, their societal struggles\, and their mental health issues. Furthermore\, this course will also invite participants to become multilingual in their ability to treat patients\, as they also become more self-aware of their own cultural biases along with the biases of others. This workshop will advocate for cultural humility\, recognizing the value in each culture’s strengths\, utilizing them in the appropriate opportunities to endorse collaboration across all races\, ethnicities and nationalities. Finally\, effective and culturally competent applicational strategies will be introduced and discussed. \nLearning Objectives\n\nTo gain an in-depth and comprehensive knowledge and awareness of the unique cultural/societal issues that the Hmong community in the Unites States has\, which also impacts their mental health.\nTo be able to identify strengths in the Hmong community with regards to addressing mental health concerns.\nTo be able to provide effective and culturally competent strategies in helping the Hmong and their families to appropriately deal with mental health\, relational\, and societal issues.\n\nAbout the Trainer\n \nMaria Moua is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. She is also a certified perinatal/postpartum counselor. Being a first-generation born in the United States\, a daughter of Hmong refugee immigrants\, she is passionate about working in the community\, helping people strive and grow into becoming their best potential. Maria is also the coordinator for the Hmong MFT Support Group. SUMMARY:NCAC Cultivating the Forensic Interview Program: Support for CAC Executive Directors
DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nThe National Children’s Advocacy Center is presenting four monthly 90-minute virtual sessions that will include a maximum of ten CAC directors on how they can build a successful forensic interview program at their CACs. \nExecutive directors of Children’s Advocacy Centers (CAC) are key champions of child forensic interviewers. Many are responsible for recruiting new interviewers\, providing access to high-quality training and peer review and support\, and supervision; and sustaining and retaining those interviewers at their centers. However\, most CAC directors receive little to no training in forensic interviewing (i.e.\, general knowledge\, protocols\, research\, resources\, etc.)\, which impedes their ability to fully support the interviewers in their CAC. To meet the needs of CAC directors\, especially those newer to their positions\, the National Children’s Advocacy Center (NCAC) has developed a new training\, Cultivating the Forensic Interview Program: Support for CAC Executive Directors. \nFacilitated by Linda Cordisco Steele\, this consultation group for executive directors will cover the fundamentals of an effective child forensic interviewing program at a CAC\, the role of the interviewer\, and how to identify the strengths and needs of participants’ current forensic interviewing programs. Upon completion of the program\, executive directors will have developed an actionable plan to support their efforts to enhance the child forensic interviewing program at their respective CACs. \nTraining Format\nThis training will consist of four monthly 90-minute virtual sessions and will include a maximum of 10 CAC directors. The group’s smaller size will enable more interaction with and learning from other participants and the facilitator. SUMMARY:APSAC Child Interview - Where Research Meets Practice
DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nTrauma-informed practice (TIP) is a critical component of child forensic interviewing. TIPs can reduce the negative impact that forensic interviews could have on survivors. They can also help interviewers adapt their memory-based interviews to meet the needs of traumatized individuals. This two-part webinar series will examine the impact of trauma on the brain and help interviewers translate the research on trauma into actionable\, client-centered\, trauma-informed practices. \nPart 1: Trauma\, the Brain\, and the Investigation \nPart one will focus on the impact of trauma on the brain\, with special attention given to how trauma affects survivors during investigations and forensic interviews. This knowledge is key to minimizing interviewer biases and errors. \nPart 11: Trauma-Informed Practice \nPart two will focus on the four pillars of a trauma-informed approach to forensic interviewing: Safety\, Predictability\, Empowerment\, and Compassion (SPEC). This training is designed for victim advocates who have been in the field for 5+ years. Topics covered in this training include: \n\nThe science behind intergenerational trauma and how to work within family systems\nUnderstanding adults who have experienced childhood trauma\nOccupational Identity (OI) and how to sustain your work for an entire career\nStrengthening cultures of inclusion & resiliency within mission-driven organizations\nRecognizing and interrogating the roles of bias\, privilege\, and oppression in your daily work\nAdvancing advocacy to include sex and pleasure for survivors of sexual violence\n\nTraining Schedule\n\nWednesday 10/16/24- 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.\, 45-minute lunch break at 12:15 p.m.\nThursday 10/17/24- 9:00 a.m. to 400 p.m.\, 45-minute lunch break at 12:15 p.m.\n\nExpectations for the Virtual Format\nFundamentals in Victim Services 201 will feature interactive modules to appeal to different styles of learning\, with a combination of lectures\, small group work in breakout sessions\, and opportunities for individual reflection. The number of attendees will be limited to 30 to maximize the quality of interaction. \nModules will take place live via Zoom. Attendees will be expected to actively participate\, using the chat to engage with presenters and other participants\, and turning on cameras and unmuting during large group discussions and breakout sessions. \nRegister through the Minnesota Alliance on Crime\nRegistration is free for MAC Member programs and $50 for non-members. SUMMARY:First Witness Interviewing Individuals with Disabilities
DESCRIPTION:Training Overview\nThis session will explore how interviewing children and adults with disabilities differs from interviewing individuals without disabilities and will review best practices. Attendees will learn how to adjust the physical space for individuals with physical\, mental\, and/or developmental disabilities\, as well as how to adjust their interview question structure and phrasing. This session will begin with an overview of best practices surrounding working with individuals with disabilities in general. It will then dive into forensic interviewing best practices and applicable research on interviewing children and adults with disabilities. \nRegister at First Witness\nDHS Scholarship Eligibility\nScholarships are available for county\, tribes\, and other local professionals responsible for child maltreatment investigations and prosecutions in the State of Minnesota. When selecting from our payment options\, choose “I am applying for a Minnesota Dept. of Health and Human Services (DHS) Scholarship.” Recipients are responsible for any other costs of attending this training\, including travel\, lodging\, and meals. Scholarships are provided through the Minnesota Department of Human Services using state and federal funds provided through a Children’s Justice Act grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. \nWe will notify you following registration whether or not you will receive a scholarship.
