ZAP Follow-up Forensic Interviews

Training Overview

Advanced training on conducting legally sound, child-centered follow-up interviews—structured strategies that avoid duplicative questioning.

This one-day advanced training prepares forensic interviewers to conduct developmentally sensitive, legally sound follow-up interviews with children in abuse investigations. Participants begin with a historical overview of how concerns about “multiple interviews” shaped past practice, followed by a review of current research and professional guidance supporting individualized, case-informed decisions about when additional interviews are appropriate.

Drawing on contemporary literature and field standards, the training clarifies the purpose of follow-up interviews, how they differ from duplicative questioning, and how they can enhance accuracy and completeness when conducted properly. Attendees will learn structured strategies for planning, documenting, and conducting follow-up sessions using non-leading, child-centered methods that build on prior information without increasing suggestibility risk.
