ZAP | The Sextortion Crisis: What Child Protection Professionals Need to Know

Training Overview

Most of us were trained to spot grooming as a slow burn. Weeks of trust-building. A predator playing a long game. Sextortion tore that timeline up.

A teenager can go from a friendly message to a full-blown crisis before dinner. The offender doesn’t need months, and increasingly doesn’t even need a real photo. With AI, they can fabricate the “proof” and jump straight to the threat. The weapon was never really the image anyway. It’s the shame. And shame moves faster than any reporting system we’ve built.

This session closes the gap between what we learned and what’s actually happening to kids right now. We’ll break down how sextortion works, why it lands so hard on teens (boys especially, in the financial wave), and why the smartest, most supported kid in the room still won’t tell you. Think of a child sitting on this secret like someone trying to hold a beach ball underwater. It takes everything they have, and the second they’re exhausted, it explodes to the surface. Our job is to be a safe place for that surface to happen. Then we get practical: what a trauma-informed response looks like in the first ten minutes after a disclosure, the warning signs worth watching, and prevention messages that survive in a world where “just don’t send anything” is no longer enough.
